Vauban for the French is just fantastic. Seige of 5, mighty fortresses fall like ninepins, he's a game winner all by himself - and he lives a long time - never, ever assault with Vauban, he's too good to lose to a snipers musket ball.

With English admirals you can post a fleet of 15 on the straits of Gibraltar and sweep the med clean of all ships with another fleet of 25, for well over 100 years.

If you look at the default leaders for a change, Venice wins. That siege bonus is very comfortable.:D

Not that that was the question but...
Dutch are better, same siege but higher firepower.

Quite right, I stand corrected, Vauban is 4 for seige. I was remembering the seige value you get with a handful of cannons. He's still brilliant.
Of xure though there are better leaders. 3 for siege but also great field battle stats I'd take over Vauban.

Well, I guess it's a matter of playing style, but it isn't hard to win battles, or even to pretty much avoid them. If you do occasionally lose, it's seldom catastrophic. Even when it results in the AI capturing a province, they always immediately march off and let you retake it without any hindrance.

What you can't avoid is taking fortresses, and mostly being able to take them fast is invaluable - quick wars avoid war exhuastion, especially through not getting caught in a long series of BB wars without being able to reset the war exhaustion to zero. So you can much more easily sustain an empire of all the religions, if you've got good seige ability.

So when I get a new leader, the only thing I really take any notice of is the seige value. It's worth having a war just to make sure you get some use out of a siege-strong leader, I wouldn't do that just for one with other good stats.

I can't remember any with seige 3 (not that I'm denying they are there). Who are you thinking of?

Dunno if it's just in IGC, but the Knights get a lot of good leaders very early on. They're not stellar, but they're among the best for a one-province country. They also have enough rank to prevent most allies from stealing sieges away from you.

The problem is they're so weak, and right next to so many larger countries, that they can't really do anything with them. Their 3 nearest neighbors (Venice, Turkey, Mameluks) all have at least 7 provinces to start with, and the only country they have a territorial CB on is... Spain.

Their leaders are toned down in the IGC, they have even higher values in the basic game. The state looses it's CB-shield on Malta though.

They also have no problem with winning. As a few-province state you do not need CB:s, especially if you attack outside of Europe (= no badboy points for DoW, CB or not)
Just wait until the Mamelukes are being spanked and then attack them with a landing force in Alexandria (having taken a loan to purchase a few guns). When La Vallette comes along you use him and your Maltese CB to take Andalusia from Spain (who usually have their armies lost against France or fighting in America) Then you are on your own, but the Southern Med coast is fair pickings.

Hm. I seem to have slid slightly off topic, so I'll stumble back by stating Sweden, 1-0-3 basic leaders, 2nd best leader 6-6-6, and some other heavies. Never checked Frances leaders though.
