What Country are you going to play first as in HOI4?

Soviet first, to understand the system and changes. Next would be Jap or Us, to enjoy naval battle!
Anything I'd say would be a lie. I always spend the first few minutes of any new paradox game endlessly selecting different nations before I do anything. This is made worse by my aversion to historical gameplay that biases me towards minor nations.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who'll probably just stare at the map and different nations for half an hour.

First USSR, and get wrecked since I have no idea what I'm doing.
Then I'll probably mess around with Brazil until I do know what to do, and then play as Italy or maybe the USSR again.

Imagine being Luxembourg in HOI4, it will be so much more difficult due to the war goals being fixed so you just can't conquer France by letting Germany do all the work.

If you're going to play as Spain, allow me to offer you a piece of advice... You're going to need to start earlier than 1936. Try 1933... You've got about as much industrial capacity as one of the Balkan minors, and your army is out of date... You'll have a hard time invading France or even Portugal. As for Gibraltar, it is very heavily fortified, and the British stockpile troops there. Your only chance would be to capture it quickly as soon as you declare war, using your entire army... As for me, I think I'll take a spin as Turkey. Their geographic position gives them the unique ability to invade Russia on the Axis, capture oil fields for Germany in the Middle East, advance communism into the Balkans as socialist turkey, or open up another front on the allies and go alongside British troops invading Greece
democratic italy, I will make best friends with US then the taking of the mediterranean coasts and north african colonies. Two great eagles separated by a single ocean joined in brotherhood. dedicated to the cause of freedom. (and killing france).
Gonna dive in head first and go US. My tutorial will be War Plan Red, especially with some friends tying up the rest of Great Britain's empire for me: an invasion of Canada should be a rather easy, forgiving experience for working a land invasion, while taking over Britain's Caribbean possessions should be likewise for naval and amphibious assaults. Furthermore, it will leave me with a lot more industry and manpower to handle whatever the rest of the world throws at me afterwards.
