England, France, Castille/Spain, Ottoman Empire, Austria are absolute musts for a long grand campaign.

Portugal->Holland->Prussia is for another player, who switches at 1570-1580 (when Holland goes free), then switches to Prussia in the early 18th century, if its united.

The final two slots....

Venice -> Russia (in mid 16th)

and

Sweden -> USA (as soon as free)

VP counts

As for VP handicapping, I started a thread a while ago and we corresponded a bit about a bidding system. That seems like the easiest way to go.

Once I finish my (first!) long term MP game I will provide the VP scores for comparison. We could maybe sticky a thread for people to post relative scores. It will have to be a long term effort though, since (as you pointed out) games take so long.

It is easier to get the VPs between scenarios start dates. That is, we count the VPs between 1419 and 1492, then between 1492 and the start date of the next scenario and so on.

This way there would be more data available for the earlier dates, and we could gauge the development of countries in EUII at specific dates for our MP and SP games, and build a handicap system. Basically this is what we did with the boardgame version of EU.
