Geogre Guelf Elector of Hanover Became king of Great Britian after Anne died. His dynasty was as the house of Hanover and they were known as the Hanoverians. They were still electors and then Kings of Hanover. Up untill William IV. Hanover was stillusing the Salic Law and so Victoria could not inherit. So the title of King of Hanover went to the eldest living son of Goerge III, Ernest. When leaving to go to take the throne of Hanover he asked the Duke of Wellington how he should leave? Since many people believed he had raped his sister and murdered his butler the Iron Duke suggested he leave quickly

I thought the name of the family was Welf, not Guelf. (Guelf being a name of a family in the middle ages, as in Guelf & Guibellines or something like that)

The Welfen family is still around today, and their family head bears the title of prince. There even was a sort of romantic anti-Prussian movement 1866-1918 aimed at restoring the Welfen to their throne.

It might be, the book I read had Guelf as the surname. It might not be correct on that front.
