What can I do to get an excommunication revoked? I've tried improving relations with the Papal State and have good relations with the current controller (his predecessor excommunicated me).

I'm playing HTTT.

Think that gimpli is right, your ruler has to die, before it is lifted.

But maybe it is lifted, if you change government type to republic? Don´t know, but could be worth a try, if it effects your nation to much.

Thanks, guys. I suspected I would have to wait for my present ruler to die. Fortunately she's been ruling for 50 years, so it can't be that long to go....

Ways to lose excommunication from my experience:
1) Leader Dies - But be careful if your popularity with the Papal States is below 100, your new leader could be excommunicated again.
2) Papal Controller can Lift Excommunication - I have never seen the AI Lift an Excommunication on the player
3) I don't think when the Pope dies that it lifts the Excommunication on you (But I may be wrong but playing HTTT I have been excommunicated for 100+years)
4) Change to Protestant - Not the best options due to -5 stability hit but never have to worry about Excommunication again (or being Papal Controller)

2) Papal Controller can Lift Excommunication - I have never seen the AI Lift an Excommunication on the player

Playing HTTT, but it happened four times to me in my current Austria game alone. England or Castille would excommunicate me, Brandenburg lifted it once (just +200 relations and they were HRE, not allied), and my vassals did it three times: Bohemia (twice), Byzantium (yes, Catholics ;P) and Hungary. They did this usualy the moment they became Papal Controller.

I also see befriended nations lift eachother's excommunication now and then, Aragon lifted that of Castille in another game for instance (vassal as well I think).

I just had the AI in my game lift Excomm on me. Playing as Castille was excomm'd by Hungary, raised my realations with the Papal States to above 100 remained excomm'd. Controller moved to Portual, then England, all of which I was negative with, still reamained excomm'd. Then finally to Denmark who I had 49 relations with at the time, bribed my way into 179 relations and then an alliance with them and was subsequently lifted from excomm status by the AI.
