I'm the vassal of a non-clan-leader daimyo. Is there anything I can do to rise up through the ranks? I've managed to grow by being first to sieges, but it's kind of getting boring not being able to plot against the clan leader and having to wait for the AI to do something.

Build a Theatre and constantly look for ninjas in that province. Use ninjas to kill people... mostly the people, who can compete with your daimyo for inheriting the clan leader title, after your current one kicks the bucket (mysteriously).

You could also try marrying any eligible members of your own family into another clan, to try and inherit their lands and/or titles. If successful, you may be able to declare independence with that faction, and start a civil war.
