What broke the AI?

So I was playing my relatively benevolent and peaceful Nobles when these stupid xenos declared war. However as a proper Noblemen we had our Forts on the borders and 7k defence was more than the enemy could muster, as I also had about 3k fleet.
The enemy had about 5,5k of strength all told, spread into 3 fleets. I was roaming around, picking off a weak system after system and it seemed, that only one fleet was active. The other 2 were anchored in a system.

I was even so cheeky, as to go to the system where they were docked and only 1 fleet engaged, the other 2 were watching from the dockyards, cheering their karamaden as they were slaughtered.

Thoughts?

Agreed.
To be fair, War AI (fleet usage) has always been wonky at best, and broken at worst, since 2.0 at least.

I was trying 2.2.3 because of the upgrade cost BS in 2.2.2 Gladius is allegedly incompatible.
