I would recommend Inherit the Stars by James P. Hogan, it's a very good hard science fiction book.
If you can overlook the bad astronomy then its hard science fiction.Um... given the orbital gyrations he puts the Moon through, I don't know that I'd call it hard SF. But it is a very good book - one of his best, I think.
In case you don't know of the Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O'Brien you are in for a great treat. Hornblower meets immersive circa-1800 realism. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey–Maturin_series. To be relevant to SF, this series was the inspiration for David Drake's RCN series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCN_Series.I guess I read them 10 times completely - started with them as a kid. I love these books (although not scifi) And if you are into these kinds of literature you might also like Richard Sharpe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(novel_series)
I need to reread "The Two Faces of Tomorrow" by Hogan (no Wiki on this book). It deals with AI run-amuck. Interestingly it seemed completely "fantasy" when it was published, but seems relevant today...I would recommend Inherit the Stars by James P. Hogan, it's a very good hard science fiction book.
I'd recommend checking out the HFY forums on reddit. Some really good reads on there, even if its all amateur. I also find that it's probably better for inspiration for this stuff then many other sourcesHello, I am really looking forward to this game, and I'm thinking about spending the wait by catching up on some classic as well as newer sci-fi literature, especially stuff that could serve as inspiration for a game such as this. What would people suggest?
Very tasteful...On the Space Opera front I'd second the recommendations for Alastair Reynolds - the Inhibitors would make a great addition to Stellaris!
But for some other great books in a sci-fi setting which aren't ey on this list I'd suggest taking it back to the 70's
Ursula K. Le Guin
- The Dispossed
- The Left Hand of Darkness
Samuel R Delaney
- Babel -17
Also Takeshi Kovacs is quite good fun![]()
