Right now I have three fleets, composed of corvettes, cruisers, and battleships, around 100-150 naval capacity in each fleet. I just unlocked titans. What should I use them for and how many should I build? I have never used them before so not sure how to approach this. Any suggestions?

They are to look cool, no real combat benefits. You can only build several of them (1+1 for every 200 naval cap, I think). Its unique aura can provide modest combat bonuses though.

Design multiple titans loadouts, each with a different support aura. Then ensure all titans are present in the same system whenever a relevant battle occurs. Getting fleetwide +5% fire rate (and reducing enemy fire rate by 10%) is very well worth the 16 naval cap each titan consumes, not to mention it brings a couple big guns along, too.

+5% fire rate will only be worth it if you have enormous fleets. In terms of boring efficiency raw battleship fleet is simply the best. 2 battleships cost as much navcap as a titan but bring 2 more large weapons to bear. The only titan aura I find useful is the one that gives +10 tracking. That can actually make a difference. -20% enemy shields is good vs AI empires, but its not like they are a challenge at any stage of the game anyway. Its useless vs crises fleets coz they have enormous buffs to the shields (like +400%) and your aura will only reduce their overall shielding by like 4-5%

When I used them before 2.2, it seemed like the Titans' auras only applied to the fleet it was assigned to.

But anyways, Titans are purely a support warship. If caught out alone, it only takes a modest group to take one out. They get stronger the more allied ships they are with, so keep them always with your largest fleet(s).

I like the aura that reduces the enemy's ability to disengage (Subspace Snare). The more enemy ships I kill the less they have to come after me later, and the more war exhaustion they gain.

This could easily be tested by the nanobot repair aura. Have it around a separate, damaged ship without regenerative hull & see what happens.

Also, debuffs are a thing. Wonder if that is applied to everything hostile in the system, or just engaged assets.

This is probably the best one.
Repair aura can be situationally useful too, if for whatever reason you expect big battles away from starbases and/or have no other sources of repair.
