Exploring Terra Incognita does tend to keep your prestige maxed if you manage it right.

Every now and then I get a Prestige +1 TI discovery. Do you know what triggers this, or what territory is prestige-giving and which isn't? I assume that certain provinces are just hardcoded as giving prestige, but is there any pattern that you know of?

I think discovering a province first (nobody else knows about it) is when you earn prestige. Certainly most of my prestige finds are wasteland (and lakes) that are completely encompassed by my territory and thus nobody else has any way to know that they exist

Any Christian: conquest of Mecca gives +1 yearly prestige and +1 missionary as long as you hold onto it.

Any Christian or Muslim: conquest of Judea gives the same bonus.

Any non-Catholic Christian: conquest of Rome gives the same bonus.

That means, if you're Orthodox or Protestant, controlling the three provinces could give you automatic +3 prestige every year. And the countries listed on this link have the national ideas that gives yearly prestige: http://eu4wiki.com/National_idea_bonuses#Yearly_Prestige

all terra incognita you explore gives you 1 prestige

Don't they all give prestige?

Not according to the popup I get. Most just say "You discovered XYZ for the glory of our nation." Sometimes, like maybe 1 in 20 times, it has a "+1 Prestige" at the bottom of that.

Maybe the former is also giving some prestige that it doesn't mention, and the latter is an extra, bigger bonus?

I'll have to watch my prestige figure next time I explore TI.

Ah yes that would make much more sense - because I definitely recall that several of the +1 Prestige popups I've received have been in regard to lakes that were in the middle of my provinces.

I have never had that message, and I do get 1 prestige per discovered province. Are you sure it's not a mod ? Or maybe a message setting ?

No mods. But yeah sorry I should have added: the TI discovery popup I enabled specifically. Normally when you explore TI, you get no popup, it just appears in the log. I enabled a popup for that.

Edit: removed rest because I was wrong, see my next post.

I can't tell you exactly how right now since I don't have the game open but in both my France and OE game I was at 100 prestige and still had it increasing instead of decreasing.

OK I see what you guys mean now - you do get +1 prestige for every discovered province.

But if you enable the popup, you will see that some discoveries say "+1 Prestige" and most don't. So that must mean that those provinces give you +2 prestige instead of the normal +1. Those bonus provinces must be ones that are previously undiscovered by anyone, as Tjolme said.

Here's an example of the normal popup (no extra +1 bonus for these discoveries). In this instance I checked and I got +3 prestige in one go because I found three provinces at once:

And this is the message setting to enable the above popup, if you want to be notified whenever you explore TI. This defaults to log only, I changed it to popup:

Not according to the popup I get. Most just say "You discovered XYZ for the glory of our nation." Sometimes, like maybe 1 in 20 times, it has a "+1 Prestige" at the bottom of that.

That is when a territory you control discovers adjacent property

Send an explorer/conq into TI and you'll expose plenty of TI which will all be logged in the Log, which you won't get prestige for.

Wrong, choose a Portugal start and send 3 explorers out on Barques. Pick the "improve our prestige" quest and you'll be at 100 in no time

I think discovering a province first (nobody else knows about it) is when you earn prestige.

This is probably it. If you found a colony and it discovers a lake or wasteland or another colonizable province one territory deeper is probably when you're getting a popup AND prestige

---and now that I see that screenshot, I absolutely think thats the case, your majerteen colony discovered all the nearby ones, but they are already known areas

Prestige is (still) way too easy to cap out. Everyone can get Religious Ideas and the Glorious Monument unique building for +2 Prestige per year, which alone will maintain Prestige at 40 without other intervention. Then you just need 3 more Prestige per year to stay at 100, or 2 with Innovative Ideas.

Yea, the decay should be exponential or something; remove the 100 cap and extend the benefits linearly but make the decay hit exponentially harder, not simply as a percentage of current prestige

Does anyone agree that +1 prestige for every discovered province is really rather OP?

I don't see how I could ever go below 100 prestige again with this! There are thousands of provinces and as of 1605, most of them I've still not discovered even though I've been doing plenty of colonisation.

So keep a couple of single light ships around for exploration, and whenever one drops to, say, 95 prestige - every year or two - send one of them out on a little mission, and then send it back to port and remove/re-allocate the explorer once done. In general I want to explore the world anyway, but I can see this being easily over-used just to boost Prestige - especially given how many open-sea zones there are that one wouldn't normally bother opening up but could be rich pickings for prestige boosts. There's a little work involved in ensuring the ships don't die of attrition and that you don't keep too many explorers around and go needlessly over the leader limit. But for nations that aren't regularly at war, this seems like a really easy way to keep prestige high regardless.

I've got plenty of prestige stil to be made in 1610! :)
