I am puzzeled to what the benefits of retinue are. For what I have understood they reinforce over time, I can declare war with them being on the map, are the best soldiers of my realm. But what else!?
apart from that I do not see the real advantages of them!?. for my opinion it is a small change that do not bring much to the gameplay!
I am missing something?

Eh? You've just stated the 3 advantages they have...

The not having to gather 50 small groups of levies from all over the map once you've DoW'd someone is a massive advantage by itself, not to mention that you can customise the composition of your forces much more easily... You can even have them marching over the border and DoW just before they reach the target province.

They are like having mercenaries permanently on the payroll. If they are at full strength they cost no money. It makes you less dependent on your vassals when fighting a war.In my current game I am HRE Emperor. When fighting a war I call up my personal levies and my retinues and only call the vassal closest to area of oprerations. Thus only pissing of a few vassals for raising there levies.

Only time I raise all my vassal levies now is for a faction War or a Crusade.

It brings A LOT to the game and by rights it should have been in game from the very begining. So with retinues:
1. This is a part of your army that you can customize to your liking.
Your usual levies are a mix of whatever troops can be levied from some holding. it will be something like 50% LI, 30% HI, 5% LC, 10% archers... It is quite hard to harness the military traits of the leader(since your three flanks will always be an irish stew of different troops)
2. This is a part of your army that is sworn to you and only you.
Whatever your liege does with your levies - these men will always be under your command, so you may desire to actively help our liege to win the war or to conuire your neiboughrs lands while his levies are far away.
3. Retinues of your vassals makes them able to bring significant force to their rebellions. It makes game much more interesting.
4. you can whack rebels with your retinue, without straining you relationships with vassals or collecting those levies of 43 men each into one host.

There are two more mandatory additions to the retinue system. I hope they will be added in the next DLC:
1. Vassals should actively use their retinues in global wars: It makes no sense for duke to just sit on his retinue while foreign enemy is pressing claim on his very lands. AI should be improved to allow vassal retinues to actually help in liege wars, if vassal is so inclined. Just like in case of Crusades.
2. People should be able to lend their retinues as mercenaries. It was quite common in that age and it would give mercenaries some more realism. For instance as a Duke of Vestergotland I would love to gain some experience and cash by participating in Byzantium civil wars.

Looking at the retinue mechanic being a percentage of realm manpower: is it true that the lord's retinue is as large as the sum of its direct vassals' retinues?

Its a percentage thereof, if I recall correctly.
It is improved with the 'Military Organization' tech as well.

Past that, I tend to creat Cataphract retinue, and have them supported by the local levies.
Nothing is quite so impressive as 6000 HC and 4000 HA in a 10k stack. Makes fighting wars easier.

IMO the biggest single advantage of retinues is that they are so darn handy in conquering OPMs, especially in areas where you have only recently gained a foothold and can't raise levies (like Byzantines in Sicily).

Quick question, how do u make a retinue? lol
1. Have Legacy of Rome DLC
2. In Military tab, select the first subpage
3. On the right you see list of retinue types to raise, should be pretty self-explanatory.

Being able to declare war when I already have a 10k stack of guys on the territory I am CBing seems like the only advantage that matters.
you can't declare war on a realm where you already have an army on
...

it doesn't stop you from placing them on neighboring counties though (and maybe even on the march a day away from arriving , though I'm not sure about this part)
