Hi
Only been playing CK2 since Friday and decided to learn through playing the tutorial, anyway to cut a long story short I raise my army and go to the place I have a claim on and unload my army which then gets slaughtered by the defending army even though I have twice as many men as them. I just wondered what am I doing wrong.
Sorry if it's a noob question but any help appreciated.

When an army lands on shore from ships, they are at 50% morale. Land in the county next to your target, wait for their morale to get up and then attack. If your target has multiple coastal counties, land in one without enemy troops.

Thanks, I will skip the tutorial and try another faction, was looking on the net and read that you can't attack from a ship like you could when the tutorial was made, thought it would of been updated but nevermind :)

You can make an amphibious attack, however, as stated before, you're at 50% morale, and you have a major attack penalty.

If you're going to be making an opposed landing against troops at full morale, you need a force at least 4x the defending force, if not larger. The more, the merrier.

Typically, when I invade Venice as Byzantium, I have about 10x their levy (in retinue and mercenaries) making the landing. And I declare war when I'm already parked in the Gulf of Venice. There is no such thing as overkill, only "Open Fire" and "I need to reload"

Thanks for all the advice it's much appreciated, I have started watching the tutorials by Arumba and your right, the guy really knows his subject. The nearest thing to this type of grand strategy game I have played are the Total War games which I love, but I really want to get into CK2 and EU4 as well as they both take a bit more brain power and my brain really needs a good workout lol. Thanks again guys for being so helpful. :)

If you want a more forgiving start but also want the same level of dynamic warfare as the Spaniards, pick the Duke of Apulia in Sicily.

1. You can get to kingdom level very quickly
2. One of the richest non Silk Road kingdoms (although mediocre manpower wise.)
3. Very powerful neighboring buffer states you can swear fealty to if you so choose
3. Large landowning kin and starting dynasty for forgiving starts
4. Fairly weak neighbors you can practice Cassus Bellis on, such as Croatia, Serbia, scattered Africa (if they unit you might have to watch out,) and some further away like the Iberian peninsula or even Hungary.

Only real drawback is it is fairly difficult to form a de jure empire.

I'm not sure you can make the landing before your army lands. In any case, a few days to make the opposed landing isn't going to help your opponent's levy very much, unless they were raised at full morale.

In any case, if you land with enough troops (I'm not kidding about 10x the size of the defending levy for an island), you're fine.

You can, however, have all the retinues & mercenaries you can afford parked just across the border making menacing noises.

They can't be playing Ride of the Valkyries, though.

But not "parked across the border" though. Have been crossing the border and only one day before the arrival if you want to just siege, or two days before if you want to defeat raised levy and siege holding with few defenders.

For a larger war, destroy enemy levy before they mobilize into a larger stack with merc and retinue. It doesn't have to be big because you are fighting only a small portion of enemy at a tine. Have your spymaster monitor their troop gathering. Have an organizer commander. Have your levy to follow and siege holdings.

Thanks guys I have decided to skip the tutorial and watch a few video tutorials instead to learn the game, like I said there was no connecting land so I couldn't raise my army's moral. The only way was to raise a massive army probably 10x bigger than the defending force and attack, knowing my luck it would probably still lose lol.
