Nope, that shouldn't be happening. You didn't miss any brackets perhaps? (the '}' thingie)

I'm going to try the edit tonight. Wish me luck.

Good success so far. Playing a game tweaked to all but maximize the chances of prov. conversion*, I've converted nine provinces in 100 years.

* Playing as the Duke of Toulouse, but with mongol culture because it's easy to track prov. cultural changes and because of the ridiculous demense bonus (to make sure EvilDave's correction works). I started with Toulouse and Montpelier in my demense and set to Mongol culture.

I've avoided building the religious buildings (except the Monasteries, for the production & piety bonuses), and kept the population power figues at P: 11-15; B: 36-40; C: 11-15 & N: 36-40.

As I added territory & shuffled vassals, the counties flipped in the following order: Provence, Narbonne, Carcassone (all from Montpelier), Venaissin , Rosello (fr. Narbonne), Empuries (fr. Rosello), Barcelona (fr. Empuries), Cadiz (fr. Provence), Valencia (fr. Cadiz), Genoa (fr. Valencia).

As I pick up more territory and better tech, the rate of conversion should increase exponentially. I'm hoping to flip the whole world to Mongol by the end of the game. Wish me luck.

Hmm, I had a Nubia game where my char became the Byzantine Emperor, he was a Russian Orthodox, and some time during his reign Byzantium became Russian... everything else around it was Greek or South Slavic... and Byzantium was my only Russian province. Then 2 months later, Alexandria (which I still held) also became Russian...

I see what you mean. In the three years game time since my last post, I flipped (in order) Napoli, Byzantion, Alexandria and Buhairya. It's taking me longer to capture provinces now than to flip them. Case in point: It took 74 days from when I captured Buhairya from the Sheik of Aswan to convert it to Mongol.

Aren't Byzantium and Alexandria connected by a trade-route ? which means that they border each other in game terms.

I also believe Byzantium has a trade-route with an Russian culture province, not sure though.

What exactly is a trade route in-game?

A trade-route means that the provinces on both end of it are treated as border states, meaning that spread-events, like technology, culture, but also the Plague can spread thought that trade-route.

The more trade-routes are connected to a province, the more likelier things will spread to that province.

Here you can find a link to all the trade-routes.

Byzantium is linked to Korchev in the Principality of Cherson, which I believe is Russian.

UPDATE: In another 2-3 years of game time, I've flipped Trapani and Thessalonike. I think the year is 1160, so I have almost three centuries to convert the rest of the world, but almost all of the major trade centers are already dressing like Genghis Khan. They like Twinkies for the most excellent sugar rush.

1/1/1165 UPDATE: More flippage: Mallorca, Gevaudan, Ochrid & Foix.

1/1/1168 UPDATE: Even more flippage: Salerno & Thrake.

1/1/1171 UPDATE: Another handful... Forez, Auvergne, Manipura, Lisboa, Messina, Venezia (finally!)

2/1/1174 UPDATE: Some more... Nice, Viviers, Menorca, Massat, Agen

It'd be great if someone else could spare a half-hour or so and repeat the tests that I did, as to confirm that the culture conversion event indeed does not work within a rulers demesne (as it should).

I have had cultural spread through my own demense. As Dongola I usually try to spread arabic culture to europe. I seize the trade ports and keep them in my personal demence. When technology and infrastructure has gotten high enough it starts speading. Note that I edited so that religion gives a small (1.1) bost instead af malus which I found silly. This however should not have effected the routes.
Since I hold all the mayor ports, not my vassals, I am certain that the spred went through my land.

My previous test got screwed up. My dynasty of Mongolian de Toulouses were killed by that most nasty of gamewrecker... infertility. I wound up with a king with no dynastic heirs except for his two equally barren brothers. And the only other de Toulouses left in the kingdom were Frankish or Danish, meaning I'd lose my demense bonus.

So I started again.

I started as the independent Count of Byzantion (no other demese territories). I anticipated a quicker disintegration of the Empire, but Dukas quickly made peace with the Turks and had largely held things together.

As of 1/1/1081, I have converted 1 province to Mongol: Korchev. I have one demense territory where my culture can spread (Trapezous) and am about to conquer a second. I also own Tmutarakan, but it doesn't border any of my other holdings.

After a couple of restarts using the Count of Byzantion setup through to about 1106, I have converted all of northern Turkey, a line of counties stretching from Byzantion to Vidin (in Croatia), Thessalonike, Athenai and Genoa.

I have some more land to conquer to open up more conversion opportunities, so I should be mounting expeditions to Mallorca, Crete (Chandax is the only remaining trade link with Byzantion not within my realm) and Sicily.

1117-ish update: About half of the old Byzantine Empire has gone Mongol. Outside of the former realm of the Purple Glob, I've flipped Genoa, Trapani, Zeta, Rama, Tao and Kuban. Key provinces in my realm I'm waiting to convert include Alexandria, Venezia, Provence and Chandax.
