Constantine I said:
Amen! I'm all for historical accuracy! Even if it makes the game harder, it's nicer to have the game more accurate to history.

But pointless if actions in the game have led to a world which does not resemble history.

For example, why should I suffer scripted revolution or civil war events if I have constantly ruled fair, just, and placated those very individuals that rebelled 'historically'. Because they did in real life? Do my actions in the game mean absolutely nothing? The same goes for the AI, are they doomed to suffer the same events happening to them time and again, no matter what actions they take? That's lunacy.

If you want complete historical accuracy go and read a history book. This is a game, and games are supposed to respond to input.

A historical game's purpose should not be to reproduce history throughout gameplay. It should be to allow the player to jump into a point in history and then change it through their actions. Trying to enforce history during gameplay is hopeless because the minute the game starts running history has changed.

I'm all for them having well chosen historic starting points in their games. The terrain, the technology that sort of stuff should be historical. However events and actions during the game should be based on the world in the game and not the path it took in real life. And from what I've read that's the direction they're going which is good.
