Hi,
After reading Aprof´s very good AAR i got inspired to play a south american country. So im thinking about maybe playing Brazil to get the hang of the game, will that be a good learning country?

I dont know anything about Brazil in the 19th century so...

-did they have much instability in 19th?

-i guess they had pretty poor infra?

-how was their economically stability? do you think it will be fairly easy to make them prosper?

My goal will be to make them the superpower of south and central America.

Do you think its possible for a first game?

/Regards

We were the only monarchy in America, with poor infra, and economy based on plantation, with the most of workforce based on slavework, with changed toward the end of the century.

With the independence of Brazil, we aquired a big debt with UK, making us the only trade partner of the previous, with the same'o great/minor arragments, buy primary products with low price, transform and sell it back as manufactured with 500% overprice, throwning in a spiral debt.

Allied with Uruguay and Argentina to conquer the Paraguay in mid-century.

Mix of races. Dumb emperor. Big manipulators, behind. Damn english pressing their interests. Nothing to do with Bolivar!!!

GREAT cellar, leader of coffee, cotton, rubber, among others.

Brazil sounds fun. I guess there would be a lot of wood trading involved.... ;)

But I'm in your camp, I haven't got the slightest clue about Brazil and it's Victorian history....

Hm this is makin me think Brazil maybe not be the best first nation to play afterall....:p

Sounds like a fun challenge though once you get the feel for the game.

Actually, I don´t find our lovely emperor Dom Pedro II that bad. IMHO, he was one of the most advanced leaders of the XIX century. Infortunatly for him, he rule Brazil, not some Scandinavian country...:p

My history of Brazil is a wee hazy, but prior to independence, I beleive the King of Portugal, fleeing Napoleon, fled to Rio de Janeiro and didn't want to come back (I don't blame him). When the people of Portugal got rather pissed about this, he put his son in charge of Brazil as an emperor while he went back to Portugal. Might be a wee off there. After that, I know the Brazilians did a fine job picking on the Paraguayans (thought the Paraguayans were hardly angels at that time) in... what was it, somewhere in the 1870's?

I think Brazil would be a fantastic first country to play. Why? Potential, potential, potential. It should have more resources than you can shake a stick at, the big issues would be building the infrastructure and industry. Slavery will be a big issue too. But if one of the AAR's is about making Mexico a colonial Empire, than surely us humans could do even better with Brazil!

You mean advanced, cause he was interested in new techs. Right!!!

So I mentioned that he was dumb, cause I remebered the story about him in the world fair, when he bought a telephone and brought to Brazil, but he didn`t have anyone to speak with. Among others. And the mess he did with his mistress.:p

Yeah. For those who didn´t know, the second telephone in the world (the first after Graham Bell) was installed in Brazil by orders of the Emperor Dom Pedro II...but he didn´t know that there´s no one to speak with him:rolleyes:

At least he extend telegraph lines thought the Atlantic, connecting South America and Europe:)

I agree with you. He was probably the best ever ruler of Brazil and thanks to him Brazil was very stable (for South America patterns). I am big fan of D. Pedro II and the monarchy.

At the start of the game we can have the turbulent times of the Regency, after Dom Pedro I left for Portugal, leaving small Dom Pedro II under the many (four?) regencies of the period...
Many revolts around Brazil... fun time to play.

Farroupilha (in Brazilian Southern Province, Rio Grande do Sul) was pretty interesting. :)

Even Garibaldi (the Italian man who fought for the Italian unification) fought in this war/revolt. :)

Brazil is a fun country to play :)

And as a Swede I kind of feel a special tie to Brazil.. Simply because we always end up meeting each other in each World Cup of Football :)

I doubt that an south american country would be good for the first game. im personally planning on one for my second or third (brazil or agrentina..not sure which).

I just doubt that you are teched up enough and have the income to learn everything there is too learn about the game. Sorta like in EUII, china/japan could be fun countries and all...but you dont experiene enough techs, trade ect...

Id stick with European/USA/China (maybe?) for the first game. Get to know the game... besides south america is always unstable...

Learn the game mechanics first, experince full diplomacy/colonization first. Since I doubt any of us are going to read the manual its gotta be trial and error, and if you do nothing but deal with ocean and bunch of little countires you arn't going to learn a whole lot are you, and since you shouldn't have a lot of income or advance in techs very good you may miss half the game your first time around?

But hey, who knows.... just my suggestion.
