Wrong. The Ottomans tried very, very hard to take Vienna. They even had a name for it: The Golden Apple. So, trying to keep the Ottomans away from Vienna is something that makes complete sense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Vienna

What I meant is, that the ottomans' abitions to westernize might be ahistorical.
Them wanting Wien is very historical indeed.

Why is it only Eastern or Ottoman tech? If you consider what other tech groups would have to push through in order to capture, core, and hold Wien, it would be quite an achievement indeed, and make for an interesting gameplay gambit.

Any other culture group that reaches Vienna - whether in SP or MP - has already won the game :p

Maybe countries like Hungary could also capture it and westernize off of it. But from the example shown, it's somewhat like a mission system but only for certain countries.

It says Eastern and Ottoman tech, so Hungary can do it already.

Does it affect your government type, i.e. can you westernize that way as republic and still remain one afterwards?

The idea itself looks awesome, hopefully the requirements aren't too easy so it won't make the player feel cheating.

Oh, yeah! Of course, I'll have to wait for a few campaigns, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Russia and the Ottomans shouldn't only stomp on the lower-techies, but fight the big boys :)

This is the first thing I am going to try out with Russia.
I lack the necessary kind of patience to take Vienna. (Or rather, to wade through the pan-German coalition inevitably arising out of taking it.)

Just dismantle the HRE at the same time then take out pieces of the coalition as it forms.

1) I also lack the necessary kind of patience to make the required arrangements to dismantle the HRE as an outsider.
2) Vienna's a coalition-bomb even without the HRE AE multiplier, because it is a very rich German Catholic province within the first AE range band of lots of German Catholics. (OK, it gets a bit milder after the reformation.)

Really curious which provinces count towards this mission, or if it is based on the development score of a western province?

Not sure the fight for an HRE province is worth it, but if there are alternatives, like in Italy or Iberia....

The same mechanic could also come into play for Indian tech groups vis a vis Muslim etc.

I kind of like that idea. Persian culture had an tremendous influence over the world during the period. Remember that both the Ottomans and the Mughals were Persified, thus the persian cultural sphere of influence at it's hight stretched from the walls of Vienna to the southern tip of India. Any nation getting into Persia would probably quickly become a Persianate itself.

Maybe allow for other techs groups to do that too, only they have to hold it longer and it isn't free westernization but only provides a discount.

I still think that tech group should be determined at the province level. At 1444, each province has a tech group (score), the average percentage of your countries tech score is your cost for new tech.

But will take a mission to westernise :)
