It has been a few years since the year with the record high world temperature. Is this because

a) the world has been in an La Nina phase. That is now ending, and when El Nino conditions reappear a new record high is likely in the next couple of years
b) the Chinese have been burning lots of high sulphur coal. Sulphur gets washed out of the atmosphere (as acid rain) fairly fast, but while it is there is has a cooling effect. New records are not likely for a decade or two, when the Chinese are likely to have got fed up with acid rain and clean up their smoke stacks like the West did a couple of decades ago.
c) a solar sunspot cycle reached its peak and temperatures are now following the solar activity down. New records are not likely for several centuries, when the solar cycle is next expected to reach this level of activity.

The only one of these that is definitely wrong is c). Sunspots follow a shorter cycle and although the current cycle is extreme, it is a once in a century effect (sunspots are similar now to how they were in the 1920s, but the temperature isn't)
El Nino does indeed have a substantial effect on world temperatures, so record years will be El Nino years. Whether the next El Nino brings a record in the next year or two remains to be seen. Its a reasonable guess that it will though.
Sulphur is the reason temperatures didn't start moving upwards sooner than they did and in the 1970s people were more worried about a new ice age than global warming as a result of cooling now know to be from sulphur. The Chinese (and others) probably won't put enough sulphur into the atmosphere to delay the next record year for a couple of decades, but you never know.
I would bet on a) but this one we really have to wait and see.

Next Quiz
There are two main groups of scientists that compile average world temperatures. The British one (HadCRUT3) which is being attacked as dodgy on the grounds of the hacked emails at the moment, and the US one (GISTEMP). They use almost the same data, but they calculate the average in different ways.

Between 1994 and 2007 HadCRUT3 shows a temperature increase of about 0.2 C. What temperature increase does GISTEMP show?

a) about 0.1 C, roughly half that of the dodgy British
b) about 0.2 C, pretty much exactly the same as the dodgy British
c) about 0.4 C, roughly double that of the dodgy British

Snoopdogg, you cheater!

Repost your vote!

Lem, you saw that!
Funny how you never called OY a cheat when he deleted his vote, even when you were alive and fully within the rules to comment on it, you merely said it was a stupid thing to do game-play wise

And yes, it was right before the deadline, after EURO's vote

Oy's vote was after the deadline, like mine. It didn't influence the votecount.

The Fourth Night

Fredrik Reinfeldt, the former president of the European Union and Prime Minister of Sweden had made the climate change issue his main goal of the presidency. Failure was not an option in the Copenhagen meeting. Imagine Reinfeldts anger at the scientists who came out before the meeting as climate sceptics and threatened to damage “his” meeting. After a quick convention with the rainbow-president Barack Obama they decided that the best course of action was to shut him up and sent EUROO7 off to Guantanamo where he wouldn’t bother anyone with his yapping.

guantanamo.jpg

This is one of EUROO7‘s many appearances

After the first day of the Copenhagen meeting you all went to sleep peacefully. But in the morning slinky’s part of the hotel woke up to the scream of a teenage girl running out from his room shouting that she’d been raped. Inside the room you all found Slinky drenched in alcohol smelling like Boris Jeltsin. Slinky was locked away in a dirty prison cell but never said anything else than that he was innocent.

EUROO7 the Honest Scientist (Villager) is lynched by the village.

Apologies
Still, even if perceived to be in a good cause, vigilante action is no the answer, has Clint taught you nothing?
Yes I'm making the comparison between The Boon Dock Saints, Dirty Harry etc., and ghosts in the game of Werewolf:wacko:
Neither have authority to take the law into their own hands when it is against the rules/law, it should be left to the GM/Police and if they don't see it and the crime goes unpunished, hey, thats bureaucracy for you:)

Vote Skarion

He was very vocal in wanting Euro dead, although, if that was enough to comdemn anyone, the entire village would be lynched by Day 3 every game.

AVN is probably a better target though, I'd just like to hear what Skarion has to say
