Welcome to Athens in the 5th Century BCE, the birthplace of Western poetry, drama, philosophy, democracy and all sorts of lovely things that we rightly celebrate to this day! Here, political decisions are made after speeches and debate in the assembly. The ability to persuade one’s fellow citizens with one’s rhetorical prowess or argue well before the judges in the courts is greatly esteemed. Not all of the citizens giving speeches do so in accordance with justice and the good, however. Some practice oratory because of their lust for gold, power, or public esteem! After all, if one has the skills of a master orator, despite knowing nothing at all about accounting, horsemanship, medicine, or pastry making, by making speeches about the just and the unjust one can bend the wills of the finest accountants, equestrians, doctors, and pastry chefs and make them into your slaves! Mmm…. Pastries!

    upload_2018-3-17_10-53-39.png

As devoted Athenian citizens, you understand that these self-serving rhetoricians pose a great risk to health of the polis and the state of the souls of your fellows. These demagogues turn the souls of the masses towards the desire of base things instead of towards the just and the good! They encourage the state to commit barbarities against the inhabitants of Lesbos or ill-considered invasions of Sicily. But... these orators are a subtle bunch; they often seem as though they indeed possess true wisdom, when in fact their seeming is simply artifice! The only way to determine who among you are true philosophers, devoting themselves through account-giving to the look of being, and who are vile sophists, running off into the darkness of non-being with their imitative art, is to engage your fellow citizens in probing dialogue and put their ideas to the test! You must waste no time in persuading your fellow citizens to ostracize these malefactors once you have identified them. You cannot simply wait for the Oracle or a divine Seer to do the work for you -- you, the citizens of the polis and true philosophers, must identify the sophists by examining their speeches and engaging them in conversation! Should you fail, the sophists are sure to corrupt the polis in all kinds of terrible ways and will likely put the true noble philosophers to death!

    WELCOME TO WEREWOLF LITE CDX

    SOPHISTRY!

    Rules

There shall be seventeen (17) players. Special Roles will be handed out after the last person signs up. The game will then proceed to a Night deadline.
The game is divided into two periods - night and day. For practical reasons these two periods take place at the same time, from one update till the next.
Each day, all players gather and decide to ostracize one of the players - the person they think is most likely to be a sophist. Each night, the sophists will strike back and try one of the philosophers for impiety and corrupting the youth. In each 24 hour period, the philosophers will ostracize, and the sophists will hunt. The philosophers can try to ostracize multiple people by creating a glorious, Lemeard-approved, TIE, and the sophists can also decide not to target anyone at all at night. Beware of Crovaxian slips as well!

    Winning

The sophists win if they manage to reach parity with the philosophers.
The philosophers win if they manage to ostracize all of the sophists.

    Possible Roles!

    3 Sophists:
Vile Demagogues! Citizens skilled in rhetoric, who imitate true wisdom, but who in truth are not wise. Practice rhetoric to accrue power, wealth, or the esteem of one's fellow-citizens and are not concerned with the greater good.

    3 Philosophical Friends:
Accomplished philosophers who devote themselves to giving accounts of justice, virtue, being, knowledge, and other such topics. Each knows the 2 others to be true philosophers and not vile sophists!

    11 Philosophers:
Ordinary citizens of Athens, devoted to justice and eradicating the scourge of the sophists!

Players are highly encouraged to role-play as ancient philosophers, notable citizens of Athens, or characters from Platonic dialogues, though the GM maintains the right to veto any RP claim. For the purposes of updates, the GM will assign an ancient philosopher, notable citizen of Athens, or character from a Platonic dialogue to all players who do not claim an appropriate RP character.

    UNVOTE THE 'LYNKSTER, VOTE ALYNKIO

Any other type of voting will not be counted and will make you eligible for subbing. In case of re-voting without un-voting the original vote will be the counted vote. DO NOT EDIT VOTES AFTER POSTING THEM.

§9. - The GM can and will remove players if the GM believes the player is not participating at his/her full capacity. This will be done through the use of killing the player's role, or using substitutes, if they are available. All such decisions are made solely at the discretion of the GM. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THE GAME IF YOU KNOW YOU CAN'T PARTICIPATE.

§10. – Always Trust the GM.

Clearly, the city of Athens is no longer what it once was. In the good old days, young men were seen, not heard. They attended their schools marching behind the Lyre-Master in orderly pairs. To teach them to weather the elements, they were not permitted cloaks, even in the winter (in fairness, this is the Mediterranean)! They sang fine patriotic songs, like “City-Destroying Pallas” In the Gymnasium, they would keep their legs closed to keep from exposing spectators to inappropriate sights! They trained in the wrestling-schools instead of twittering away about absurd topics in the marketplace. These were the men who bravely fought off the vile Persians at Marathon!

These days, the youth can barely lift their shields, flirt brazenly, chase after other attractive youths, treat their elders disrespectfully, waste away in the public baths, and speak treacherously. They twist the patriotic songs of old with new-fangled melodies and obscene lyrics. Clearly the youth have been corrupted by impious men and taught to desire shameful things by certain sophists in the community! The continuing Peloponnesian War requires excellence of the youth of Athens; what can be done to remedy this spiritual decay? Who is responsible? (Also note: old people have been saying “kids these days…” for at least the past 2500 years -- this is basically 5th century BC Athens’ version of Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll)

Recently a stranger from Elea, rumored to be an associate of Zeno and Parmenides, had come to visit Athens. Many wise men of Athens such as Theodorus the Geometer considered him to be a worthy and philosophical man -- next to godlike in fact! Socrates himself wondered whether the man might not secretly be a Refuting God come to set the Polis straight due to the general weakness of Athenian argumentation!

One day Socrates challenged the Eleatic Stranger to define the term ‘Sophist’. The Stranger rose to the challenge. “The Sophistical Art is surely something subtle and difficult to set down! Let us see if we can define a different and simpler art first to hone our account-giving skills in preparation for this most difficult task! Let us begin with the Fisherman!”

Noting how quickly the Stranger had developed a distinguished reputation among the men of Athens for his wisdom, certain members of the community came to fear and resent his influence. “Everyone just does whatever the Stranger tells them! No one thinks for themselves anymore! If we eliminate him, the city will be ours for the manipulating” these malefactors remarked amongst themselves. So they went to the judges and complained, “This Stranger must go! Listen to him droning on in the marketplace about Fishermen while a bunch of impressionable young men sit enraptured! These youths should be training at chariot racing or wrestling or javelin-throwing or some other appropriately manly art!” The judges agreed and came to the marketplace to expel the Stranger from the city.

The stranger was concluding his speech. “Thus we can conclude that the Sophist’s skill has arisen from the contradiction-making art of the dissembling part of the opining-art -- the imitative man -- who himself has sprung from the apparition-making kind of the image making art, which is a human, and not divine, kind of making, and who makes wonderous speeches!”

“What a load of baloney!” Declared the judge. “You are manifestly corrupting the youth with this claptrap, Stranger. You are hereby banished from Athens on the pain of death!"

The Stranger, furious, turned to the judges and declared, “Cowards!” before sailing back to Elea forever.

The wise men of Athens turned to each other fearfully. What are they to do without the leadership of the Stranger? Are they doomed to suffer the influence of the Sophists forever? Who could have done such a thing?
