Don't know if you've seen it but there is a Canadian TV series called Murdoch mysteries about a turn of the century Toronto detective. It had a case where telegraph operator chatting played a central part. So I don't see why WW couldn't have been played by telegraph - if only WW had been invented back then.

Two people is perfectly fine indeed. And if you are a skilled telegraphist you can telegraph really fast. But would it be possible to maintain a discussion between say 35 people via telegraph?

If that TV series is to be believed it worked like telephone connection from the 80s when people called an unused number and everyone could hear everyone else ("heta linjen" in Swedish) . So as long as all 1850s WW players were all on the same telegraph line it could have worked.

Making it illegal would be difficult to enforce and rather unreasonable if it was done by accident.

They had phone lines where you could hear someone else talking a while back, though, and I don't think it was illegal per se, though maybe not advisable.

On the other hand I probably would support (what we today consider) idiotic policies though.
Though I guess I wouldn't be the only player who would be in that situation if we were suddenly lifted 170 years back.

But yeah snipes by telegraph would be something.
I'd probably still be in China. I don't know much about how China was in the 1850s, though I think it was probably under British colonial influence through opium and naval power. Not that it would matter that much, since I'd be a peasant, farming the land under the hot sun and probably indebted to someone. I would probably not be able to read and I might have internalized misogyny. Wow, that's a depressing thought.

WW: 1850s Edition leaves many unanswered questions.

and rather unreasonable if it was done by accident.
Many things are illegal despite being perfectly possible to do by accident.

I'd probably still be in China. I don't know much about how China was in the 1850s, though I think it was probably under British colonial influence through opium and naval power.
The Brits actually didn't have particularly large concession zones in China. Unless you were somewhere at the coast (or the Yangtze) it would be really unlikely you were in one---and even then you probably would need to be in a city or close to one. On the other hand you could also have been under American, Austro--Hungarian, Russian, French or German dominance.
Especially in the 1850s where the concession zones were only getting up and running.

Not that it would matter that much, since I'd be a peasant, farming the land under the hot sun and probably indebted to someone. I would probably not be able to read and I might have internalized misogyny. Wow, that's a depressing thought.
I on the other hand could be residing in the family manor (lost to another line over a century ago; bloody rules preventing females from inheriting:mad:) lording it over peasants. Or be a successful businessman with several businesses (large enough that when the king came past our part of the country he several times came to meet us; sadly all the decorations given by the king on those occasions were destroyed in a fire over half a century ago:() and have money like dirt. That actually sounds really nice and alluring. On the other hand being not just conservative, but actually quite reactionary doesn't sound good at all.
(Some of the businessmen actually believed in equality between the sexes and wanted women's suffrage shortly after 1900 despite belonging to the lower upper class; though that is half a century too late so can't go with that line.)

Would you be sickened by the very idea of a welfare state?
Probably yes. Especially if I picked the reactionary parts. There at least until the 1940s e.g. females had to behave in a very particular way. Despite having a bazillion under dresses they for instance still had to sit in a few very particular positions lest they got a rebuke and were told they were visible "all the way up to next Sunday" (actual expression used). And that is female children playing we are talking about... Good thing all those Old Norse ideas have died out in later generations.

But I was more thinking about how I probably would be a national liberal (unless I went with the nobles; then I would be another type of conservative which was really undemocratic). The national liberals were really popular among the upper class people who weren't nobles; they were the ones with stupid ideas about how Denmark could beat Germany and how you should stubbornly continue to demand that Denmark should go to the Eider and negotiating with the Germans was completely out of the picture despite them having conquered a large part of Jutland already and having almost annihilated the army. Bloody idiots.
Would I own slaves?
Don't know. Did your ancestors live in the South back then? Were they middle or upper class? If yes then probably.
By the way move it a few decades further back and I might actually have owned slaves.

Could Marty survive a potato shortage?
Who knows. Though I think the question is whether he would be able to resist making alcohol from the potatoes.

I don't know if this is the right thread for asking, but I was reading some old games and there they mentioned the veteran returning bonus.
And I'm wondering now what it means and the amount of games it's applied for.
And how long do I need to stay away to get the bonus again ?

Same way as if you are in a discussion with a lot of people in the same room. You don't all talk at the same time.

Also wasn't aware that you back in the day could do that with telephones. So you could hear calls on other lines?
It was all the same unused number so you were all on the same line (or so I've understood from people that did it).

How did you know what the unused numbers were?
Word of mouth. Someone discovered a number and gave it out to friends who shared it with friends etc. And then it worked until the phone company managed to close/block it.

And wouldn't it be illegal to call them since you would be eavesdropping?
It was indeed illegal but not because of the eavesdropping (that was sort of the point, calling the line and talk to people anonomously). It was illegal becasue the phone company couldn't charge you for it.

Hmmm, it seems like what Johho is talking about might be unique to Sweden. It did remind me of these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party_line_(telephony) which could also be used to play werewolf.
Hm, maybe it was unique because the wikipedia article https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heta_linjen_(telekommunikation) doesn't have any other languages selectable apart from Swedish. Strange, if that was a technical glitch surely it must have existed in other networks as well? LM Ericsson did telephone networks for a lot of other countries.

In a room you can easily have 10 discussions at the same time with 35 people. I have a hard time seeing how 10 discussions can be going on at the same time through telegraph.

Look at it like a panel discussion then.

But I feel we are once again drifting far away from "general werewolf discussions" and I am more than a little to blame this time...

Don't know. Did your ancestors live in the South back then?

Yes. One batch came to Virgina after the Puritan launched their rebellion against the Stuarts. Another group came from Scotland to the Carolinas after the failed Stuart insurrection in 1745. Whether or not agreeable climate and quadroon mistresses were sufficient comforts for having departing their home isle seems to have been left unrecorded. The important thing is that though my ancestors lost a lot of wars, they looked stylish and romantic while doing so.

By the way move it a few decades further back and I might actually have owned slaves.

Maybe our ancestors met at a slave auction? That's an intriguing possibility.

The very bloody Taiping Rebellion was soon underway. Much of China was under the rule of a curious tyrant who thought himself Jesus's brother.
