The_Executer, I think you have an inflated view of how much pm'ing really goes on. Most of the game really is played out in the thread. Unless, as EURO says, you're JL or a wolf, in which case you don't have much choice but to communicate by pm.

What you need is to get a JL or wolf role and see the awesome power of private messages.

Nah, I'm so new, I've only ever been a defenseless villager...

Like everyone in Shawshank, I'm INNOCENT!!!

Does no one read emoticons? I am being sarcastic...

And yes, I know that most of the trusted communication occurs by PM. What I object to is that certain players seem to do ALL their communicating by PM. It really was refreshing to see randakar playing a crazy seer...and Ironhead being the JL spokesman while outing himself in public...this is what makes werewolf fun, not sitting behind the wall of PMs and patiently building an inevitable JL for a village victory. That's like watching grass grow and/or statisticians playing WW. Hmm, I'd say we have a 25% chance of killing a wolf today...ah, but if we lynch an inactive, that chance is now 27%...Who's inactive?...BORING...

C'mon EURO, AOK, and jonti-h...show you got skills and actually TALK substantively (doesn't have to be true) in the public thread...and about more than just the statistical part of the game...

I care very little for statistics and only PM when I am PMed. What I do do (hehe) is put pressure on people in the thread.

You didn't read my post at all.

That is not true at all. I don't think any players do that. There is NO clique of veterans who just discuss the game privately, that doesn't actually happen.

Hmm, I'd say we have a 25% chance of killing a wolf today...ah, but if we lynch an inactive, that chance is now 27%...Who's inactive?...BORING...
How is this relevant to the usage of pm's?

Am I the only one that PMs constantly? I will often contact people out of the blue just to see what they say. I do it almost every game in fact. Usually to multiple people. And if I trust them, or if I know that they are my enemy (keep you friends close and your enemies closer) then most of the communication I do is via PM.

The only thing you have to do to get into a closed game (as you call it) is to open the door.

I know I have mentioned this, but I am very jealous of your ability to convey complicated arguments in a single sentence. It would have taken me a couple of paragraphs to say that.

I wouldn't be very good in my job if I couldn't. :)

Also, I lack verbosity. So I make up for it with brevity.

Why have you never pmed me AOK?

I don't actually care, it is very rare that I will PM without the motivation of having a role where it is needed or responding to someone PMing me. People with no apparant ties to the JL or some other org keep talking about PMing each other, which mystifies me (not really that much.)

definitely not.

I do the same thing in a lot of games, especially big games. It gets you a much better feel for what other people think and can be absolutely invaluable in a variety of ways. What many people seem to forget here is the old saying: information is power..

I have not tried you because you hold your cards to your vest very well. There is nothing to be gained from contacting you. Most players will give at least a hint somewhere about what they are thinking. You give nothing, good or bad. Posts or PMs. You are unreadable.

My goodness gracious, how did the wheels fall off this debate so quickly?

And why is everyone treating TheExecuter with such disrespect? Some of you guys are waging a one-sided flame war against him. Kudos to him for not responding in kind and attracting the wrath of the mods.

This community wouldn't be the same without the likes of EUROO7 (who is the neighborhood wit; every humorous meme we have developed came from him, directly or indirectly); jonti-h (who, as butt of EUROO7's jokes, also contributes to humor, and is a shrewd player to boot); AOK. 11 (who is the Dr. Claw to everyone else's Inspector Gadget, the menacing, shadowy figure who may or may not be your destruction, or salvation); and the rest of you.

But I fear the inmates have taken over the asylum. Variety is the spice of life and the oil of the WW engine; as our community grows smaller and smaller, the style of play becomes more and more monolithic, especially as the players who have stayed have generally been approving of the chess-style of play. I think if we made a big push to get people involved, it might diversify our community and counterbalance those who espouse the chess-style of play. But if we do so, are we going to blow our load only to get more fresh meat for the meatgrinder? A bunch of rookies or returning former players who can be paired off and lynched in the first ten or fifteen days so that the gentrified veterans can enjoy their endgame without the unwashed masses to muck it up? If we do that, they won't come back for more.

...

By the way; awhile back someone said that the optimal number of players was 40-45. Maybe; but I envision a game of 60 or more, and if we can achieve it I propose handing out brutal traits and hunter roles like condoms in a public high school. The game would last the same amount of time as a 40-45 player game, but would be a glorious bloodbath.
