When pronounced, that 'm' would sound as 'um,' which is perfectly fine as a syllable. It's understated, but still a syllable.
Are you sure that isn't just mangled American pronunciation? I have always heard ism pronounced as ism and not isum.
I'm having difficult twisting my tongue around to make 'ism' a single syllable. At best, it's a syllable and a half.
