What does a "small scale research project" mean? It sounds like it might be similar to the SRO and SRP here in Denmark; those are done on the 2nd and 3rd year of high school (the SRO is a smaller scale of the SRP; it is the SRP which counts---SRO is just for practice for SRP).

It's Sunday. Day off and all. Tomorrow, it's back to Work and I simply don't have the time to allocate to fully play. I'd just become a zombie and I will not do that. (Again)
In America we have to do science fair projects. It's kind of dumb since any experiment that the average high school student can make up has likely already been done several hundred times, and also because most students just use "experiments" from the Web or smh. All the fun and interesting things are leached out of the science.
(Except that once I tried making a potato battery.
It didn't work.)
This is also why science textbooks are really terrible, usually, because they have very leading questions and explanations that are connected to experiments, meaning you can accidentally figure out what the experiment is supposed to do and what concepts are related to it without ever actually doing the "experiment" at all. In fact, you can answer the questions about the experiment without ever doing the experiment at all. The best/worst part is when the experiment doesn't do what the book said it should have done for some reason, and so either you have to lie in order to make your results match up to the expected answer so you can explain it properly in relation to the concept, or you get to try to explain some freakishly weird phenomena. Which is exactly what you're not supposed to do in real science.
Example: we did an experiment simulating bone strength wrt collagen and fewer nutrients. But when we simulated the bones-with-less-nutrients, the bone actually got stronger.
Or another example: we did this experiment with different chemicals turning different colors, but the chemicals didn't turn the right chemicals so my science teacher told us to lie about the results. What the actual heck.
Or another example: when we used microscopes to look at (still-alive bugs) we couldn't find it but we have to describe it anyway.
And then no one really knows how the scientific method actually works, on account of how they had to fabricate results to conform to what the book told them; and no one ever explains to them that you want to disprove things with your experiments, not prove them.
