I 'd say that humans (as species) originated from East Africa while people refers to more specific group of.. people. You wouldn't say Aztecs originated from East Africa, now would you?

Well no, not really. When the Soviets tried to expand phosphorite mining in the late eighties nearly everybody rose against it, because they could. We sort of have somethings near the Russian border and in Tallinn, but both of those regions are mostly not thought of as natural places.
