Edit: It worked. Now I just need to disable all those annoying popups; most importantly the one about whether or not I want to quote what I quoted. That one is ridiculous.
I'm pretty sure you only see it as horrible because that's what you're used to + nostalgia. It's pretty hard to say objectively that seeing all that brackety stuff for no reason is a good feature.
You are talking to a member of the LaTeX master race who despise WYSIWYG editors like Word. And I even use emacs as my editor for coding/coding LaTeX.
Just writing code simply is much easier and it is easier to correct things like links when you actually can see them. Although it appears they have removed hotkeys like ctrl-b to get bold, ctrl-u to get underline, etc. That is really really annoying and make the coding of a post more annoying; coding things is supposed to be faster than WYSIWYG.
And in the dying days of the old forum I did use WYSIWYG rather often, since that was the only way to have Firefox correctly break the line at the end of the line; and it was a chore compared to just coding posts.
You looked up just LaTeX? Yeah don't do that. Though if you need something specific for LaTeX it is prefectly safe to search and include LaTeX. Say you need to write down a large mass in solar masses and you don't know the solar sign is made by \odot. Then searching something like 'latex sun' or 'latex solar sign' ought to give you the correct answer. Although it doesn't always apply. I know somebody who once needed to use a heart, so he searched 'latex heart' and didn't get the LaTeX code for making a heart...

Do what? Actually, no. Last time I agreed to do something with a noob it blew up in everybody's face. I won't make that mistake again.
Completely forgot to talk about editors. I have never heard about sharelatex, so I cannot say whether or not it is a good editor---unless you are pulling a pun on me... I have heard that TeXstudio should be decent, but I have never used it myself. There also is another editor whose name evades me at the moment; that was also supposed to be good although I never really used it. But so far I haven't seen anything which beats emacs with the AUCTeX extension. You want an equation, but is tired of manually writing
\begin{equation}
\left[\frac{n_Eu}{n_H}]\right = -1.5
\end{equation}
?
Then AUCTeX helps you. Among it many many really helpful shortcuts is C-c C-e which asks you which environment to use. Just write 'equation' and the above code---without the actual equation of course---is automatically written, indented correctly, and you are put in the place where you have to write the actual equation. Easy as pie. You want to change your equation to e.g. align? Just use C-c C-u C-e then and write align while standing inside the equation environment. Couldn't be simpler.

Wagon have you heard of the crossover between GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and LaTeX? It's pretty useful for writing academic documents with accompanying images. Google LaTeX GIMP.
