Werewolf CCVIII: The Grand Convention of Conspiracy Theorists

The Setting

The world has no shortage of people who believe that there is some well-kept secret about who’s really in power in the world. They believe that some shadowy cabal of pernicious influences manipulates everything for their own ends, and they spend all their spare time trying to expose these influences to a world unaware of their being controlled.

Frustrated by their lack of any substantial following among the general populace, a number of conspiracy theorists organize a convention, to discuss their pet ideas with like-minded individuals, and to plan how they can disseminate those ideas to a larger audience.

While most of the attendees are just garden-variety kooks, some of these conspiracy theorists appear to know a bit more than some people are comfortable with. And this convention might have just the slightest possibility of providing these people with a large enough media presence to be taken seriously by others. Therefore, they send their agents, disguised as normal attendees, to eliminate them, and everyone else, just in case...

The Rules:

(With much borrowing from johho888. Thanks!)

The players represent a village where each member has a role that is kept secret. Most of them are just plain, ordinary Villagers, but there are some Werewolves lurking in their midst. The goal of the Villagers is to eliminate all of the Werewolves, while the goal of the Werewolves (and their allies) is to achieve 1:1 parity with the villagers (at which point they can openly rise up and overwhelm the Villagers, thereby winning the game). Different wolfpacks cannot win together; all wolves from opposing packs must be eliminated for a victory to be achieved.

The game is split in two sections, Night and Day.

The game begins with a Night, the time when the Werewolves decide among themselves who to eat and when all players' special abilities are used. The Werewolves and the "special villagers" submit their choices/orders to the Game Moderator. Any orders not delivered in time will be IGNORED.

Daily actions are handled in the following order:

1. Votes

2. Leader

3. Brutal

Nightly orders are handled in the following order:

1. Distiller

2. Police Detective scan

3. Sorcerer scan

4. Seer scan

5. Priest scan

6. Assassin

7. Guardian Angel

8. Werewolf Hunt

If multiple attack orders are sent from the same pack, the last order submitted is the one that counts. Only one werewolf attack takes place during the night (unless no valid hunting order is submitted, in which case there is no werewolf attack at all), no matter how many werewolves or werewolf packs there are.

During the Day, the entire village (including the wolves, who appear to be “normal” conspiracy theorists, as far as that is possible) meets to decide who is a wolf and therefore must be lynched for the greater good of the village. When a player has decided whom to vote for, they type vote Player X in bold font and preferably at least size 5, to ensure that your GM notices the vote. Editing of votes is strictly forbidden. If a player decides to change his vote, he types Unvote Player X, Vote Player Y. The "unvote" is there to help me count the votes. I will however count changed votes even without the "unvote", only somewhat slower and with a bigger risk of getting it wrong, so please help the GM and use "unvote" when you change your votes.

Abstaining from voting without declaring absence three times during the game will result in autolynching (or being substituted by another player).

The deadline for nightly orders as well as voting is 17:00 GMT. Shortly after this, the lynching takes place and the result of the Nightly activities is presented. Posts submitted at 16:59 will count while posts submitted at 17:00 will not.

No new players will be admitted into the game once it has started, but it is possible to substitute for dropouts.

Spectators and Ghosts ("dead" players) may haunt, taunt and flaunt. They may not reveal any secret/inside information nor may they do voting records except for the current day. Anyone caught doing it risks being banned from later Werewolf games. When making a ghost/spectator comment, please use a non-white color. Also, the color gray is restricted to the GM.

Alliances between players which aren't based on your roles in the game are frowned upon. These alliances which continue from one game to another undermine the whole idea of the game.

Forged Private Messages (PMs) are allowed. Quoting or forging PMs from the GM is allowed, with the exception of the role PM. Arguing about PM numbers is silly, and I don’t care if you delete them or not. If discussion about a PM’s authenticity is based in any way on PM numbers, I may at my discretion autolynch any of the participants.

Screenshots of PMs from players or the GM are not allowed and anyone caught doing it will be autolynched.

The Roles:

Conspiracy theorists (Villagers): Ordinary conspiracy theorists, with no special abilities besides voting.

Werewolves: Will choose a target to hunt each night. More specific rules, aka the hunting pattern, will be given to the werewolves but will not be public knowledge.

Seer : A conspiracy theorist who is adept at discovering who does and does not belong at the convention. May scan one person per night to see if he is an Infiltrator (Werewolf) or unclaimed Apprentice (100% success). Any other role will appear as a regular Villager to the Seer.

Cultists: People who believe in conspiracy theories, but want to be a part of whatever power is really pulling the strings in the world. Works with the Werewolves, and wins if the Werewolves win. Learns the identity of a wolf master at game start and that Werewolf knows the cultist's identity in turn. Cultists may be unattached or pack specific. An unattached cultist may join a pack by sending a PM to the GM along with the name of a wolf whose pack he wishes to join; the wolf must acknowledge this. Once joined, cultists cannot switch packs, unless all the wolves of their own pack are dead.

Priest: May scan one person each night to see if he is a Seer, a Sorcerer, an Operative, an unclaimed Apprentice, or a Cultist (100% success). Any other role will appear as a regular Villager to the Priest.

Puppetmaster (Sorceror): Works with the Werewolves, and wins if the werewolves win. May scan one person each night to see if he is a Seer, a Priest, an Apprentice, or a Cultist (100% success). Any other role will appear as a regular Villager to the Sorcerer. Once per game, in lieu of scanning, he may choose to curse a player. If that player is eligible to be cursed (i.e. not Seer/Priest/GA/wolf/cultist/already cursed), he will become cursed on the following night. The sorcerer will not know whether his attempt to curse the player was successful. The sorcerer will not be able to scan for one night after placing his curse.

Apprentice: Only becomes active if his master is killed. A scanner can have more than one Apprentice but in case of the scanner's death only the first Apprentice will become active. An apprentice works just like their former master. If an Apprentice is in the game, the first scanner who finds him (and survives the night) will make him his Apprentice. An unclaimed Apprentice does not know that he is one until he is scanned. There might be claimed Apprentices at game start in which case these claimed Apprentices will know their role.

Guardian Angel: A conspiracy theorist highly concerned about the well-being of his fellow attendees. Each evening, will keep watch on one player, protecting them from being attacked by the wolves. He cannot protect the same player on consecutive nights, nor can he ever protect himself.

Operative (Police Detective): An agent of the worldwide conspiracy, skilled at discovering the most prominent conspiracy theorists, as well as which of the attendees are most susceptible to being recruited by his masters. Works with the Infiltrators (Werewolves), and wins if the infiltrators win. Can send in a scan order every night; will learn if a player is blessed, cursed, assassin, cultist, sorceror, or GA, with 100% success. Cannot detect or claim apprentices.

The only roles guaranteed to be in the game are conspiracy theorists (villagers), wolves, and the Seer.

The Traits:

Paranoid (Spiritually Attuned): A person unduly paranoid even by the standards of your typical conspiracy theorist. A paranoid person has a 100% chance to sense when someone is scanning them. They will have a 25% chance to learn what type of scan was used on them, and a mutually exclusive 25% chance to learn the scanner's name and role.

Brutal: Upon being lynched or brutalized, may choose one additional player to kill.

Leader: A particularly persuasive and charismatic conspiracy theorist, capable of swaying the others to listen to him. Once per game, may make his vote count for four votes instead of one.

Assassin: A conspiracy theorist who brought a handgun and is skilled in its use. Can send one nightly order to kill someone, bypassing all forms of protection (e.g. blessed, GA), after which his ability is used up. The assassin's name is revealed after shooting.

Cursed: A conspiracy theorist who can easily be turned to aid the . If a cursed person is targeted by the werewolves, they become one themselves. It will be revealed as a "no kill during the night". The Cursed will be unaware he is cursed until attacked by a wolf. The Seer, Priest, Guardian Angel, Wolves, and Cultists cannot be cursed at game start. A cursed apprentice that turns into a werewolf loses his apprenticehood (though his master will be unaware of this).

Blessed: A blessed player is skilled at evading nightly attacks. If he is targeted at night by the wolves, he will not be arrested, but he will lose the blessed trait.

Tin-foil-hat wearer: Wears a tin-foil hat to prevent electromagnetic radiation from reaching his brain, preventing him from being scanned. Any scan sent on a player with this trait, regardless of role, will return "no reading".

Distiller: Each night, the Distiller may choose to share a bottle of rum with a player (the target). The Distiller and the target are unable to perform any other action during the night. The target will only learn of the visit if he was stopped from performing a nightly activity. The target will not learn the Distiller's identity (because of the memory loss). The Distiller will only stop a wolf hunt hunt if the targeted player is the last member of the pack.

Seerish powers: Gives a player a single functioning seer scan.

Priestly powers: Gives a player a single functioning priest scan.

Sorcerous powers: Gives a player a single functioning sorceror scan.

Angelic powers: Gives a player a single functioning GA protection ability.

Roleplay:

Choose your favorite conspiracy theory and RP as one of the supporters of said theory. There are plenty out there for you to mock, so have fun! However, be advised that certain topics (such as 9/11-related conspiracy theories) are forbidden as per the OT Forum Games rules. These will, for obvious reasons, not be permitted in the game.
