I know I've got a few other people buying it over the past couple days. The "I know you like XCOM" approach to the discussion is very effective.

Certainly is. I haven't the foggiest about the setting but big metal things with lasers, sure, why not? (Also: the music is fantastic - been following that for a while.)

Man is XCOM a frustrating as hell game. Ive modded all my guys with better aim, more health, more defense and they still steady gettin wrecked.

They consistently, no joke, miss 85%+ hit chances. They steady missin' 97%, 96%, 92%....then my guys in heavy cover get hit like hes in the open

There are a lot of tactics one can do in XCOM to accomplish missions successfully, and without having to mod or cheese the game too, though this isn't the forum to talk about that. (Still proud of that time in XCOM:EW where I completed and won three Classic Ironman campaigns in a row without fatalities).

I hated XCOM2 and just recently purged it from my Steam account for good. The game just never clicked with me and LOS was very confusing and counter-intuitive. Partially I put it down to XCOM2 having square grid map as opposed to hexagon based system like BT.

Oh yeah, and XCOM2 never ran well, plus is still fugly and buggy.

Did not buy "XCOM2", since the scenario was not appealing to me. But "XCOM : Enemy Unknown" has a special place in the gaming department of my heart. :)

While I don't agree with your overall opinion, I loooooove how BT has handled previewing LOS and hit chances. When I first started playing XCOM I would have to save before some moves because I had no intuition on predicting whether I would have LOS or cover after a given move.

Fun fact - in unmodded XCOM (well, XCOM 2 at least, not sure which one you're talking about here), enemies have - unlike your troops - absolutely *no* range penalties whatsoever. That lowly advent trooper you ignored will have exactly the same to hit% regardless of whether he's sitting on the other side of your trooper's cover, or sniping them from the edge of their line of sight.

That being said 85% is not 100%, and in fact it's a 3 in 20 chance of missing. Anyone who played D&D will tell you that happens more often than you'd like ;) It does work both ways though, even if it might not seem so. Just yesterday I had a smoke-covered grenadier face a quarted of pissed archons. Didn't look good, all four went for melee, 64% chance... three misses in a row, fourth one did hit but that she could manage :)

All in all I'm squarely in "love XCOM 2 to pieces" camp, but @sgt_pinback is somwheat right, in the sense that XCOM 2 line of sight is messed up sometimes. I'm going to challenge the "never ran well" a bit - the PC version of WotC is a major preformance improvement.

The thread title reminds me of a fun fact. Of all the recent (which means: in the last few years) Third-Party-Games published by Paradox, BT is about to get to the second position in terms of total posts on this board. Ranking so far:

Cities Skylines - 129.000
Steel Division - 42.700
BattleTech - 38.700

And if we take a look at the "posts per Thred" rating, then we see:

BattleTech - 38.5
Steel Division - 19.5
Cities Skylines - 9.75

Sure, this value will go down for BT after release due to umpteen threads with questions / bugs / suggestions with less posts, but looking at the grand picture, I am fairly optimistic, that we will reach "in success".

43 hours to go. Good luck to all of us. :)

To all the people who keep saying that people don't want to play turn-based games, you are wrong. Now could HBS pick up a license to make a turn-based pathfinder or D&D game and I would be in heaven? Looking forward to seeing where BT and HBS do next.

Im talking XCOM Enemy Unknown. Yeah, I notice the enemies seem to have no issue hitting me. The only time they missed me ALOT was the first round of mods I put in, where I jacked up my soldier's defense value, but that got boring, so I rerolled it and put in less drastic numbers. My most recent round of changes, It doesnt seem to make a big enough difference, and the enemies are just steady wailin on me.

Also, sup with the 2 legged robot thing the baddies get? How many times a turn can it fire? 3 so far that I saw. And does it even miss?Thing nuked me with 2 huge laser blasts and then got a reaction shot...like really?

How do you even play this game unmodded? My guys get melted modded, unmodded, dear god....

XCOM is really hard until 1) you develop strategies to counter enemies, which become more or less universal (in XCOM 2 I figured out now to destroy Sectopods very early on and they were rarely a thread despite being one of the most dangerous enemies 2) you get powerful enough your guys run roughshod through just about everybody.

It's very impressive how active this forum has been since it was created two months ago. Crushed Surviving Mars forum activity is another "positive" sign for the game (although Surviving Mars isn't necessary a game you talk to death about).

Wouldn’t want to turn this into an XCOM strategy thread but generally you want to be either A) flanking enemies, removing cover with explosives then shooting enemies, and locking down dangerous aliens or B) hunkering down and/or overwatching to get the aliens where you want.

I only bring it up here because I think a lot of people are rolling their eyes at streamers in this game just popping off alphas every turn into braced mechs with high defense for ‘reasons’ and eventually turning some weapons off. This game is even more intense with rationing as you have the whole heat mechanic and if you are running neutral it’s probably because your mech has origami level protection or plans to throw harsh language at the OpFor.

A Coop game for this I think would be cool if it was simply the same 4 mechs, but instead, your partner controls 2 mechs and you get 2 mechs and you gotta coordinate efforts.

What kinda yanks my chain watching streamers is how one minute they talk about a strat, then dont follow through. Just watched a ChristopherOdd video, he talked about pulling his spider back, did a Sensor lock on a locust then didnt even fire at it. Its like they have short term memories and forget what they were doing.

I do aim to flank the enemies, but it kills me when my guys still miss like crazy, doesnt always seem to give me any worth while advantage either. Right behind em, 65% chance to hit...like really?

As for blowing up cover, not a fan of that since I will wind up needing it in a few turns. I never hunker down much...maybe I should do that more lol.

You have the IS ancestor, the Thunderbolt!

Clans can wait. Give me Wolf Dragoons and ELH short campaigns, followed by 4SW and War of 3039.

Definitely need the Helm memory core before clans, otherwise the Ilclan will be named.

The original XCOM2 was one of the most poorly optimized games I have ever seen. The performance was simply atrocious (kind of surprised they basically got away with it... IMO the game was borderline broken).

WOTC however performs quite well. I could barely run XCOM2 on my gaming laptop and I can run WOTC just fine with medium-high settings
