Finally decided I'd get around to getting the Trail of Tears achievement. Steamrolled everyone, was rich and colonizing lots of land. I had everything I needed for the achievement, and more, but I just needed to westernize. Inevitably, Portugal declared war on me and brought his big buddy Spain with him. Fought a long war and got Spain to peace out with just a concede defeat. There was just on remaining problem: Portugal had declared the war to annex my entire country. And they had wracked up some early warscore by killing a few hundred thousand Cherokee warriors repeatedly. Now they had a 18k army that just would siege down a place and move on while I assaulted the capture province. It was a never ending game that was going nowhere. I had destroyed the entirety of the Portugese fleet multiple times so they couldn't reinforce. After 50 years of war I got fed up. Yes, 50 years of war. The war length modifier stopped increasing so Portugal doesn't care at all how long the war has gone on, it's only like a +1 towards peace. Their war exhaustion isn't going up at all, they don't really take any meaningful attrition from my provinces (even if I scorch the land and watch them siege down on it, they replenish to full and their manpower doesn't skip a beat), and there's literally nothing I can give them. They don't want gold (-1000 modifier), they don't want me to release provinces. All they want is to annex me. They don't own any provinces for me to give them. I reformed my government but their troops still wipe the floor with me even though I now have cannons, cavalry, and guns. They periodically get a protestant revolt (their capital apparently went protestant) but that never goes anywhere. They've spent a ton of money constantly rebuilding their fleets (I've wiped out at least 20+ size fleets now). But because the warscore is ~-20, I can never get close enough for concede defeat to be good enough. So it's just a never ending stupid war.

I tried Xara. It didn't add anything to the positive modifiers that I noticed because the AI didn't want gold, he wanted to annex me. And he was incredibly insistent on it. Spain didn't want gold either, literally the only thing that would appease them was annexation, land, and concede defeat. Concede defeat was eventually enough for Spain but Portugal never got tired of the war so it was never enough. I probably could have given them land but then I have to just let them siege down half my country and concede it, and the more I give them the more they'd want so I'd eventually just get annexed.

If all their troops are in America you can try to build an extra army and invade them. If you get Lisbon, they will very likely peace out.

If you've managed to destory their entire fleet multiple times, then why haven't you blockaded them? Blockading will definitely drive up war exhaustion and force them to eventually accept a peace deal.

I thought about that, but I didn't have vision of the path to their continent, I could only see their capitol (which is how I could see it had flipped to protestant, oddly enough). I was debating dumping points into exploration to get someone who could scout it out for me, but I only recently reformed my government so I only recently was able to get exploration (I chose plutocracy early instead to combo with innovative and Cherokee ideas). Also, I was pretty sure they had an army at home of around 10k and that would destroy anything I sent over.

Yes, you are right. I forgot about that. Seems like you are stuck in a war you can't possibly end. If I come up with something else I will post it here

If you can get to their capital, you can get to the rest of their country. You don't need an explorer to fog bust terra incognita in enemy territory. If you have an army there, you can march from one province to the next to conquer.

I did have something similar happen to me on two attempts at the achievement. First time I colonized the thirteen colonies area and got wardecced by Portugal, Spain, France and England who then proceeded to steamroll me without agreeing to anything less than annexation. The second time I started colonizing towards the west coast so as not to be such a juicy target, yet still got wardecced by the greedy bastard, Portugal, almost as soon as they appeared on the continent.

Like in your case, nothing less than annexation would satisfy them and they thought they're winning since they beat up some less advanced OPM's (who whitepeaced out) in my federation decades ago. All troops they'd bring from europe got slaughtered by huge hordes of Cherokees with firearms and cannons, yet it took them years between the invasions and each stack was worth almost no warscore at all. I don't think I even got to the 50 year mark since after some time France had appeared on the continent, finally declaring war on me after several decades of peaceful expansion. This broke the status quo and the Europeans then proceeded to beat the shit out of me.

I guess you'd just have to be faster with finding an ally from Europe. Both times I was what felt like just weeks from getting someone to agree to a military alliance before the inevitable war, so it should be possible but heavily seems to depend on luck.

How large army can you support? You can try to face his army while defending in the mountains with overwhelming forces and a decent general. Preferably from the other side of a river as well

You can start westernization even if you are at war. And you will get the achievement just for starting it.

That is where I left of my Cherokee game, just after getting the achievement. An never ending war with Portugal where I have wiped out their fleet twice, they have no troops left on the mainland, but I have a -40% warscore so there is no peace they will accept. And since I lost all my native buildings due to reforming the government, I can no longer maintain my forces and reactionaries are swarming all over.

Is it possible to get France as an ally before all Hell breaks loose? They are good Opposition against Portugal, Spain and Britain.

Ouch, that sounds horrible...
Guess I was incredibly lucky in my 2 CoP tries with natives. First one with Chickasaw I had a similar case like the OP. Was quite huge and bordered Portugal when they for sure decced (vie colonial Expansion) of course Spain was also brought in the mix. They utterly destroyed me and I went benkrupt in the process, but they just wanted 1(!!!) single province...oddly the last one of my around 65 provinces that they had sieged. Had to quit that game, but not because of that lousy war, stuff like that just happens, but because I wasn't properly prepared for Westernization.
Second walkthrough with the Cherokee no one arrived in America till the 1570 and luckily it was the English...I could even ally them. By now it's around 1700 and that Alliance still stands and they repeatedly rely on me to beat the crap out of the Portuguese (who are also not allied with Spain).
No Trail of Tears-Achievement, Westernization and Blobbing are basically a Piece of cake, so it seems one should hope not to meet Portugal? Oddly enough in EVERY single CoP-game I have started I see Brittany colonising in North America

On another note: Has anyone else the Feeling that the NA-tribes are reallyreally cool now and not remotely underpowered anymore? (Ok, you have to survive that first crucial colonial war, if it's coming, but afterwards?) The ideas are really great, even the generic ones (the only ones I dislike are Creek and Iroquois), but unfortunately you are forced to become either catholic during westernization (and enact the counterreformation) or to fully develop religious ideas, otherwise I don't think you can really proceed.

But afterwards? Holy shit. I sit there with +3 advisors, -25%tech (Creek NI, innovative and plutocracy) and roll in a monthly netgain of around 130 ducats...just wow

Is your country still functional while at war? If so why does it matter that you are at war? I was at war with Portugal for close to 200 years in my Sulu>Malaya game and this is on 1.3. I actually started, finished, and then caught up with Portugal in Westernization while at war with them. By the end of it they were bankrupt and a OPM. They agreed to be my vassal when I finally got around to sending an army their way. I was wondering why there were no more armies headed my way for 50 years :).
