Hi,

I am experiencing some strange russian AI behavior in my ongoing 1.06 game as Germany. I played historical so far and the campaign plays out pretty historical with some real challenges included. (f.e. keeping Germany going with out enough oil etc.)
I have captured the russian oil-fields by now (prime objektive in my attack on Russia in August 1942... sounds familiar?!)

I have yet to take one of the major cities (urban) and I will only advance further when my troops are ready and the wheather allows for it.

But
1. Russia has about 380+ divs in 1943 - which is ok. But it doesn't have one single tank on the map and no tanks in production. (I checked the savegame)

2. Russia has researched all kinds of stuff - but tanks only basic medium MG and and improved medium 40mm... :(

3. Russia does have a stack of 12 subs sitting in the english channel + one smaller stack of subs. Its even building more subs...
(I guess Stalin wants to place them in the Wolga to stop my tanks from crossing)

4. Other than subs militia seems to be Stalins favorite lately...

6. For almost a year Russia has not launched a single counterattack, although I was terribly outnumbered. Before that I had several attacks that could not be stopped due to the sheer numbers. (It is a weird feeling - as if the Russian AI had nervous breakdown.)
(In contrast the allies are quite busy invading etc. - and doing a good job sofar)

7. Now I see 60+ divisions moving up and down the frontline.... (if any of these stacks would ever move towards Berlin I would be in trouble.) - but nothing happens. (I knew this from previous versions but have not seen it on this scale)

8. There seems to be no system in leader assignment at all - Shukov comands a lonely militia division near Mongolia - whereas General Majors command enormous armies on the front.

I had heard so much about the new russian AI.... (wasn't it suppsed to come from the AI enhancement project?)
The complete lack of armor will break the neck of russia (and it doesn't feel righth)

Any ideas?

I posted the fact that Russia doesn't produce any tanks a few weeks ago. Some people insists it does!!!

In my only game as Germany 1.6, Russia had a total of three or four tank divisions the whole time (more than made up for by their huge number of infantry).

I think it's an AI thing though. When I played Russia, I noticed that Germany wasn't producing too much tanks either.

It does. And loses them in the finish war. Besides compare a bit the cost of tanks and mech inf. Considering there are no invasions required there, mech is much more cost effective than tanks AND do not need upgrades. Do not forget taht there were much more supposed to be armoured divisions than real ones. In game terms, some historical armoured divisions have been casted as motorized infantry or mechanized inf.

Thelamon - Stop playing my game! Eerily, I am having an identical game to this one you've described here. No really, the same. Just out of curiosity, have you put a lot of research into the intel and recon techs. I'm wondering if that affects the aggressiveness of the ai. Every once ni a while the 60-stack goes somewhere, kicks your ass once, then never exploits the victory. Only Leningrad is left for me to finish off the Bear.

Right now I've a game where Russia is making no tanks, just as you guys say.
Mind you that doesn't seem to trouble them as they are holding the Germans with no problems at all.
But still.

Are you sure it never builds any tanks in any of your games? In my current game as Japan 1.06 VH/F, Russia built over 25 tank divisions. Then again the German AI never encircles any Russian armies, so maybe you just encircled and destroyed their tank divisions?

Same thing

I am playing Germany right now (v1.06), and I noticed that the Soviets only have "one" tank division available. It has over 350 infantry divisions (plus 28 fighters) though (good for them), but only the one tank unit. I have not started my invasion yet (just finished off the French), but I see that the Soviet infantry is almost as advanced as mine. My German units are pretty buffed out at this point, and I find it very difficult to believe that the Soviets could build that many units and still be able to invest in research. Even if they are not researching other areas (like armor and aircraft-which they are not), I don't think they have the ability to produce those numbers and still advance their infantry research ( I played the Soviets many times before). Remember, it takes around 40 points just to research ground doctrines like " Early War Combat Testing", and it takes about a year to complete. That is allot of IPs being tied up. Also, I don't like when the computer attacks with "Mongusso" (huge unrealistic) armies, but I hope that the computer will at least launch some counter attacks.

Play CORE. Russia produces armor and will counterattack.

LOL
In my game Russia completely smashed the Germans (btw I've had NO games where this doesn't happen. In ALL my games up to now where I have no strength to really influence Europe, Russia annexes the Germans ;-)).
Anyway, they invested in tons of mech infs, which, quite frankly, are a very viable alternative to tanks.

I believe the AI has a "panic" mode in which when you get close to the capitol or make singificant gains in enemy territory the AI starts producing militia much what would happen IRL if a country was about to be finished like in Germany 45'. While using my mod (in my sig) I've found that countries like Russia and other Germany produce alot of Mlitia in this panic mode. Russia in WW2 did have the tatic of charging into German lines, look at their weaponry, cheap and easy to build, much like the men it seems. Vanilla HoI seems to use that tatic too much :p

Well if you completely ignore armour and aircraft as the SU, why wouldn't you (or the AI in this case), be able to build 350 vanilla infantry? I've tried a few games as the SU in 1.05c where I built no tanks or bombers, just a few fighters and vanilla infantry. I reached the end of the infantry tech tree by 1943 or something and had over 300 divisions. There's no IC difference in 1.05c and 1.06 so why should this be so hard to accomplish?
