I'm new to the game, but I've not been able to see this answered in some searches.

So here is the issue. I started as Duke of Barcelona in 936 or whatever. Waited until Leon went to war, and I declared war also. We both won and are expanding.

North of me, I see the Duke of Aquetane take a county from the Duke Gascogne. And a few years later, all of sudden the Dutchy of Gascogne is independent.

How could that possibly happen?

Also, how can I stop paying Tribute to France? The intrigue option has near impossible requirements of the King of France needing to have negative prestige. That probably won't happen often. There has to be another way?

Hmm, it's sort of hard to tell without a screenshot of the map at the time, but I'm guessing he was cut off from his de facto liege and became independent that way. What's your exclave independence rule set to? There's also the possibility of a successful demand from an independence faction or the like, though it's hard to know about that sort of thing if you're not part of the same realm.

It's usually easier to answer questions like this if you let us know which DLCs you own and have active, which mods (if any) you're using, etc.

I have exclaves allowed.

I quickly got a claim on his primary country, then the next, and began a dejury conquest.

I was just shocked to see a full Duke with a major king liege just gain independence all of a sudden. He did become cut off from France by the Duke of Aquetain. But he was a vassal to the King of France.

I'm posting here from mobile away from game, if it's something people want to see I'll try to find a save game from that time and get a screen of when I first noticed it.

I formed the Kingdom of Valencia and am still a tributary to the King of France. Annoying.

Thanks, of course that makes sense.

I'm running Monks and mystics, way of life, legacy of Rome and Charlemagne.

No mods.

This also isn't affecting my gameplay, it's basically a curiosity because I could tell he didn't, and couldn't have won his independence at war.

Ill try to get a screen in here next time I play.

You could go to the portraits of the king of France and the duke of Gascony to check for truces with each other, and if there is one, hover over it to say what it says about the war that caused it (if there was one). Or maybe there was a faction for something and the king was in a different war, so he gave in to it?

If you're now a King, I'd look into fighting an "independence" war (technically the "Free tributary" CB) to end your tributary status. It could be a good time to form a strong alliance, if you haven't already.

Navarre is messing up my plans....
The king of Leon and I have basically taken over Iberia.
The southern half of Portugal and Granada remain in Muslim hands and they're in a civil war...

But somehow the king of Leon got excommunicated. His heir is married to my daughter. And his daughter is married to one of my sons. Eventually I'll take over his kingdom, but I'll probably try to do it through inheritance.

I'm also the father of the queen of Navarre.

France isn't costing me anything, aside from the tax. They haven't come to help with the Muslims tho, but we haven't really needed it. Once I get Iberia under my Domaine, I will probably try to expand into Africa.

I've little interest in taking on France, although it would be nice to adding the Dutcy of Tolouse to my holdings.

My brothers son is married to his daughter.

Anyway, game is going fine, other than my son and heir is now 20 years old and it still has the child photo of him. It hasn't shifted to an adult photo.
