How's everyone doing after the first week?

A few things I've noticed.

1. Expectations for this game are still ridiculously high, people asking for new things, complaining about and comparing the
game to more mature releases that have been out for much longer and/or were much more expensive on release.

I think people need to breath a bit more and relax, provide useful feedback to the devs and let them continue to work.

2. Modding is out of control, and not in a good way, I noticed SkyStorme producing modular Farm Field items by using the Park generator, which is good, but not paying attentionto the fact that the Leisure aspect was left on. I suspect many more are doing the same. I'm pretty sure this will throw the balance of your city out of whack.

3. I have noticed Commercial demand seem a little strange where it drops to 0 and stays there, some have said this is to do with Parks not working right. It would be nice to get some dev feedback on this, but if so Point 2 above is only going to make this worse.

4. Park placement feels a little strange, placing it against a road, sometimes it's green and sometimes it appears red with what looks like a road added. For asymmetrical parks it would be nice to be able to rotate them and place them the way you's like.
Can't seem to be able to do that, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

5. Making money in the vanilla mode does seem a little easy, at 55,000 pop I've 4,000,000 in the bank and more rolling in. I realise there's a mod for this but I want to get all the achievements :)

I played friday-saturday-sunday morning till midnight :) Still learning and figuring out the game, at the moment i think i'll play it so much in the future.

Expectations come from people who don't have enough information about the company and have no clue about game developement.

At least making mini in-game icons for modded stuff will make the whole thing a lot easier. Now i only see white bricks in my imported bulidings and intersections and parks, really hard to choose from them because of this.

I'm optimistic and enjoying the game atm.

I didn't had as much time to play, as i wanted, but for now, i'm very pleased.

Some tweeking here and there, some additions to the game (tunnels, tree-brush (without the mod), parks accesable via pedestrian walks etc) and the game will be great!

For now: Descent and stable relaese, great engine, great base to form an excelent game throughout the coming months and years!

At least making mini in-game icons for modded stuff will make the whole thing a lot easier. Now i only see white bricks in my imported bulidings and intersections and parks, really hard to choose from them because of this.

Yeah! Using the snapshot for the icon would be totally enough! Hope they patch this in.

Pretty much exactly how I feel a week in, blew up my PSU over the weekend playing this game and doing some tutorials on Blender so I can at least attempt to mod a building in lol. Buying a decent PSU now, the one I had turns out to not be as good a make as I thought.

Yes, I think this game needs time to settle down. For example some people need to start curating good content from the rest. There's no other way to get that overflow of mods at the Workshop in control.

I didn't expect the hype to last/grow past release this strong. Reddit r/citiesskylines has grown 3x. Twitter #Citiesskylines is booming. Steam nr. 1 seller spot has been locked down even with things like CS:GO at -50% during a huge event weekend that received over million spectators.

The game is indeed proving slightly on the easy side. But it wouldn't have been such a runaway hit if random streamers etc. would've been thwarted with harder and potentially less fun gameplay in the learning phase.

This, watching you-tubers play allowed me to avoid a few pitfalls at the start.

1. I agree about the flood of feedback, requests, complaints and praise. Hopefully it will calm down over the next week or two so the devs can sort through the feedback and decide what's most critical to fix/change/implement.

2. This. Also many modded assets lack thumbnails, which makes it impossible to find them as they all have the same generic grey icon. The Workshop has something called "Collections" which will become useful. Also, some of the best mods will start to distinguish themselves due to the rating and popularity rankings.

3. This looks like a serious bug/balancing issue with the game. I haven't experienced it myself, but supposedly it can kill off an entire city. It's hopefully something that gets prioritized by the devs.

4. I also don't like that you can't place parks along pedestrian paths. Who places a park next to a busy avenue?

5. Some find the game too easy. It seems the developers prefer to give players creative freedom rather than offering up a real challenge, except for traffic which can get quite frustrating. A "Hardcore Mode" mod should be able to solve this, or the devs could choose to implement multiple difficulty levels.

Workshop has become pretty annoying to watch, I wish people stopped uploading brick by brick and instead work on larger, consolidated mods so they won't spam the whole Workshop with their stuff.

I agree that the workshop area is pretty bad, there is so much crap there that it can be easy to overlook the good stuff. Overall I'm loving it though, fixing busy intersections is awesome, watching the map go from red to green is a rush. I still think the Industry traffic is too heavy but it gives me a plan for the future. Instead of having huge industry neighbourhoods, spread them around the city in smaller doses.

I seriously dig this game, this is the game I've been waiting 10+ years for.

I have to say, biggest single satisfaction in the game is turning a red traffic zone into a nice green :)

In fact most of my time developing a 50k+ city is spent staring at the traffic map and figuring out the most ergonomic designs.

Even though it's true searching good mods in the Workshop isn't so easy, there are fortunately many websites around where people are showing off what deserves to be: this forum is of course one, but there is also reddit, simtropolis, simnation and so on and so forth...

As it's often the case, you'll find stuff faster by directly using Google rather than by using the Steam internal search engine...

Had a really hard time buying the game, steam checkout didn't work several times, ended up having to do it on a completely different computer, yet I purchase things all the time on my gaming rig, so that was annoying.

Game crashes on exit 100% of the time.

Game uses 83%+ of my GPU no matter what, and it generates a tremendous amount of load for a game that is graphically primitive. (we're talking a completely flat world, with no buildings, no roads, no water, nothing, generating 83% GPU load on a 6950)
I've never seen a game yet generate so much load while rendering so little. Optimization = zero. No vsync? No FPS limit? Fail. Hard fail.

Can't get any citizens to move in. My population is zero, roads are there, buildings are there, jobs are there, but population remains stuck at zero. Everything's watered, powered, sanitized, yet... no citizens. Coming from Sim City -> 2k, 3k, 4, etc, this is mildly frustrating, but I'm sure it's something simple. It's just not covered in any tutorial, or in the wiki, or on the forums.

The interface is lacking compared to even SC2K, the game is simpler than I expected, the road layouts don't match the pipe layouts, you don't have to really 'connect' things, they just work by proximity or osmosis, little things like that. Not at all worth ~$30, but maybe they'll fix it or player mods will fix it.

Hate the steam requirement. If I could buy this game without steam, I'd pay double.

I've only played a couple hours. Just haven't had the time or been that motivated to play it. I don't think the game is anything special. My expectations aren't out of whack. I've installed a couple graphic mods in order to make the game more playable for me.

I'd like to try soke sandbox mode soon. Just open up the whole game.

All in all, I don't have much feeling for the game yet. I think it could be great in a couple year when computers get even faster in order to support the 25 tiles on sole high end graphic mods. More building content etc. but that all that will take time.

I'm hoping some comes out with that blue marble mod they used in civilization 4. The graphics are a little janky and could use a good overall if possible

How's everyone doing after the first week?

A few things I've noticed.

1. Expectations for this game are still ridiculously high, people asking for new things, complaining about and comparing the

I think people need to breath a bit more and relax, provide useful feedback to the devs and let them continue to work.
I agree, however, sadly, peoples expectations are so high that they're not looking at the long term. The Devs wanted a game which was a very good base on which to build in, and this is. It also allows ridiculous amounts of mods which not many other games offer.

Yes I agree, but some of the mods are brilliant. I mainly look at the interchange ones rather than buildings or parks as they offer what I want :)

3. I have noticed Commercial demand seem a little strange where it drops to 0 and stays there, some have said this is to do with Parks not working right. It would be nice to get some dev feedback on this, but if so Point 2 above is only going to make this worse.
It isn't that the rating drops to 0, its that the demand is so small it doesn't register properly on the bars. That does need changing I agree. Perhaps if it could specify which district it was needed that would be helpful too.

Parks should be able to be placed anywhere that there is no ground polution, next to a path or road or not.

5. Making money in the vanilla mode does seem a little easy, at 55,000 pop I've 4,000,000 in the bank and more rolling in. I realise there's a mod for this but I want to get all the achievements :)
Yeah I agree, but then again, we're probably ramping up taxes to 13% and leaving it. For a bit of difficulty, stick it to 4%

1) Yeah, definitely agree there!

2) Interesting, I've stayed away from modded buildings atm, I'm fine with the vanilla ones for now.

3) I haven't had this problem, but I don't have a lot of parts so that could be why, I'll see what happens.

4)Yes, I agree with this. It would be nice if we could place them anywhere, without the road, but they don't work unless you connect pedstrain paths too them. Mainly because inside of roundabouts create terrible grids for zoning but would be a great place for a park. But often the grid zone it too small for the park to "snap" too, though the park would fit nicely in the middle of the circle.

5) +1 AGREED GREATLY! I'm literally at the same place 55k pop and about $4 mil in the bank making $28k a week. The later number there feels great, but I think time goes by TOO fast on the highest speed so you accumlate it too fast. Maybe change it to monthly profit vs weekly or something, I dunno. I tried the hard mod and that just seemed broken to me, everyone demanded high land value with is super unrealstic and they all left because of it.

I'm greatly enjoying the game, here's a few things I've noticed. I tend to only talk about negatives, so keep in mind I am still playing the game, because I am enjoying it overall :)

A) Either the numbers are off or trains are HIGHLY underutilized by Cims. I have 5 train stations across my town and it says only 54ppl pwere week use them in my city of 55k. More so I get WAY more tourist trains than local, and my total tourist are about 120ppl. Add to this my trains cost $7500 a week! On the flip side I get 4500ppl a week using my subway, and it cost a couple grand less.

B) Biggest problems are garbage trucks and hearses going ALL over the place. I'd love to see an option to restrict a services buildings vehicles to specific districts! Have an option in either the district's menu or on the building's menu that lets you choose which district or districts it services. This also includes schools too.

C) Unique buildings don't feel unique enough. I've played a lot of the tall unique buildings and they really don't feel like they do anything other than look neat. I guess if that was the point then ok, but the descriptions seem to indicate they do more or affect things but I haven't really noticed where that is the case. I hate to refer back to it, but that's what I think SC series as a whole does pretty well, those unique buildings are pretty unique and it's rewarding when you unlock them, as you can now add something that greatly influecnes something in your city. I haven't got them yet but that sounds like what Wonders do, so it'd be nice if unique buildings did that too, just on a smaller scale.

D) Tourism seems unfinished or broken. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong, but 120 tourist for a pop of 55k doesn't seem right. Especially since I've placed MANY of the supposed "tourist" unique buildings. I'd love to eventually see a tourist themed dlc/expansion focus on that and make it kind of like a mini game like it was in SC2013.

E) Greatly look forward to tunnels, can't wait to put most of my pedistrain overpasses under ground instead! Maybe add the option to place Subway stations underground, ie make it so they can snap to pedstrain paths too.

F) Dam physics are a littlle off, or hard to understand. Probably more tuning and tutorial around where and how to place those, seems most ppl don't get any flow thru them, and those that do get very little MWs from them

G) OH! Power costs need a rebalancing. Not only the affordmented dam stuff above, but also the pricing is rather off on some. Biggest example is Nuclear power plant, the cost per MW is much higher than all the rest, plus it's a bigger footprint, AND raises your water usesage too so there is ZERO reason for anyone to use it, which is a real shame, as it is modeled very well.

I think that's about all I have. I'm enjoying the game quite a bit, and have nothing but enthausim for it's future!

I have to say, biggest single satisfaction in the game is turning a red traffic zone into a nice green :)

In fact most of my time developing a 50k+ city is spent staring at the traffic map and figuring out the most ergonomic designs.

It's also the most frustrating aspect. I've decided to abandon my first city because there's just no hope. I've re-designed the highway exits 3 times and each time they get crazier and more convoluted and the traffic just gets worse.

I kinda like it. Yes there are stupid things like folks using only 1 lane on a 6-lane road but in most cases I can fiddle enough to fix the heaviest congestions.

At first it was frustrating but I've come to like it because of the rather free-form tools the game gives you. My intersections look mighty ugly though.
