Colonising - its an addiction right?

Even if I play a landlocked country I find myself heading for the coast in my early conquests, I just cannot handle the colonists=0 display at the top of the screen...

Perhaps we should create a new society - Colonisers Anonymous!

Not for you the dull, boring slugfest that is WC. You want to paint the world your country's colour, but in a gentle, semi-realistic way.

OK, the first entrance qualifications are:

1) You have to have built a manufactory on an african coastal province (to get the population growth +ve)..

2) Or you reloaded from a save game when your colony in province X of 400+ was destroyed by a native attack..

3) Or you just had to use 'pocahontas' when a brilliant opportunity to lay down a TP came along, five seconds after you sent your last colonist out..

Any other suggestions? (For me X was Luzon)

Confess!

OK, you play like this right?

1400s : Expand your country steadily and strategically, making sure you don't exceed the BB War count, get maps from Portugal

1500s : colonise strategically important waypoints for your explorers, get maps from Spain, England, get military access to countries that can be used as waypoints. Grab Manhattan. Fight a few defensive wars at home, pick off a few more provinces as badboy permits

1600s : colonise, colonise, colonise. Fight wars to consolidate your colonies into self-supporting groups, knock over a few pagans and convert.

1700s : Continue colonisation. Beam happily as the spanish colonies and conquests all defect to you. At home you can boss around your neighbours, and you are so big no-one attacks you, even when you are dishonourable scum.

Or am I the only one?

Here are three exploits I use consistently. (I'm playing UK V1.04)

Exploit 1: Gain maps of 'foreign parts' by
a) Diplomacy with Portugal/Spain/England to +200 to exchange maps
(also gain Military access for Exploit 3)
b) Conquering the capital of Portugal/Spain/England/France to gain map knowledge
c) Conquering the capital of a newly formed country, which has recently rebelled from Portugal/Spain/England/France, to gain the latters maps

Exploit 2: Improve colonisation percentages drastically by taking advantage of the native attack-
- ie place TP or colony on a province. If it fails, pause, rush to the province and see if there is a native attack (A native appears waving a chequered flag). Colonise/place TP while the native is there - you get percentages of success as if the province was empty)

Exploit 3:You have military access with Portugal or Spain or England. They have a TP (very ocasionally a 100 settler colony) in a province you want and there are natives there. A small force of yours lands in the province, attacks the natives (hit pause) and then runs away! Native attack wipes out TP, and you place your TP/colony (using Exploit 2 if you can)

Any other exploits?

Just out of curiosity... what's new or shocking about any of this? I haven't seen anything that hasn't been discussed before...

(Edit: Ah. I think I get it. Just looked at the timestamps.)

Rapid Posts: Doesn't everyone prepare their text offline and then go online to post with copy and paste? This OldTimer does! When I saw the great splodge of text I'd written I decided to split it into three posts for easy reading. However I'm not supposed to do this - my mistake.

Anyway, on with the thread. Hopefully.
