We have an understandably limited selection of weapons. It's 3025. It's not the era of ER and pulse and special and so on. Helm MC hasn't been recovered and distributed yet.

However, there might be a careful selection of weapons that are different as opposed to outright better, and don't violate the technological doldrums the IS is in at this point. Some were technically introduced into the game at later dates, but they're so simple or simply variants of existing tech that IMO there's no reason they couldn't be in a game set in 3025 -- they're all well within the technical capabilities of the IS in this time frame.

Light AC5
Snub Nose PPC
Rocket Launchers
Heavy MG
Light MG

These are just ideas, so please no need to go into attack mode if you don't agree. I'm just looking for what might add a little more variation to the weapons without violating the spirit of a 3025 game.

If you have any suggestions for weapons or other equipment that fit this theme, please post them.

Again, just thinking out loud.

Again, just thinking out loud.

I agree the RLs and MGs would make sense as earlier. I also think they are solid additions to the game and easily implemented. RLs as useful filler for excess missile slots, HMGs for bonus support damage, and LMGs as long range support weapons.

As for the LACs and snubby, I think these are beyond current tech. They are not simple modifications to existing weapons, but refinements. LACs make use of new materials (like LBX ACs) while snubbies are SL experimental weapons, not a sawed-off ppc. Hell, the snubbie was an important forerunner of the cERPPC.

Ignoring the tech limitations, both these weapons are problematic. For LACs, do they do AC damage at shorter range or are they both shorter range and lower damage? I’d say the latter, but that will cause questions on why they have the same # as the more powerful standard versions. The snubby is easier, since it can just be a powerful, short ranged energy weapon. You don’t need to translate its TT nuances to make it a worthwhile gun.

In CBT/TT The LACs have shorter range in exchange for less weight, that simple. They don't strike me as anything requiring great technology to design or build. Maybe it just doesn't work in this game because of the spotting/vision limits cutting engagement ranges back so often.

(And as a general comment, this thread was just for brainstorming/discussion, no need for people to start throwing negs at each other -- we can disagree in good faith.)

Extreme range isn't worth much in this game with the relatively short view distances and cramped maps. If the "light" versions of the AC/2 and AC/5 were in the game with the same damage but less range, the regular AC/2 and AC/5 would be rather pointless.

AMS should be in. It's not exactly high tech. Sure it's a bit of a retcon, but it's one that doesn't really break much. AMS is literally just an MG linked to a targeting system and your 'mech's missile warning system.

It's actually literally the targeting system that was 'lost' if I remember correctly. I admit, it seems weird to imagine a society of the Battletech universe's level managing anything, much less holophones and whatnot having 'lost' the ability to reinvent a 2010's level of computer technology, but in the 80's that still seemed like far future tech in it's own right. Keep in mind, the collapse of the star league and the loss of knowledge that resulted led to a lot of the higher end tech that were preserved being preserved in almost religious fashion, by sheer rote and memory with no real understanding, and as great secrets.

I am not sure we need any more weapons, as they would just add to the list of unused weapons that are not an LRM20, SRM4, Md Laser, or Support.

I've got LL and PPC scattered around my force.

Some people get a ton of use out of the AC20 from what I've read.

Just depends on how you play and what mechs you've salvaged.

I really don't care about "the meta", the "best" build is the one that a player enjoys and does well with.

Almost forgot, the binary laser cannon (blazer) in around. Basically a double barreled large laser, it runs hot as hell but is a ranged headcapper.

I rather like this one - just added it to my mod for a Zeus 6Y. Can't wait for the day we have a Marauder to mount a pair on as well :D

I do kind of think someone could get around to watching Sesame Street and discovering there is something other than Short and Long and come up with MRM.

They call those NEAR and far range missiles ;)
