Honestly I think some of the designs decisions made lately by PDS are questionable: the randomized new world, the canals, the Western Europe trade node... Some of them took a huge amount of development work and are or will be barely used... I.e. I never used the randomized new world...

Speak for yourself. I haven't played without random in my last 15 games (except one where I forgot to check it)

Maybe the building of canals should be optional when starting a new game just like how the RNW is optional..
That way everyone would be happy ;)

All it takes to effectively remove them is deleting the decisions file for canals, not exactly rocket science. Pretty much any feature they implemented since launch you dont like can be reverted by deleting a subfolder or a small edit to defines ;)

There was a Suez canal built by the Persian Empire millenniums ago, though it fell in ruins (also due to the red sea decreasing in size).

Not exactly true: it connected the Red Sea with the Nile, which flows into the Med. It wasn't a canal across Suez. As a result, it was basically for ships that could go on rivers, and pretty much nothing in the EU4 naval units tree counts except possibly galleys.

Well, Suez is a city, so sure it didn't go across Suez. Regardless, it was a canal that connected the med with the red sea, and it allowed only river boats (though I doubt they would be able to do much better in EU IV timeframe). It is not anachronistic, however, someone could have built a canal during EU IV timeframe, but it wouldn't have been like the current one, ofc.

Someone threw some figures around of like, 20,000 gold to build them. I highly doubt any AI would ever afford (much less start) the venture to build one.
It just seems like a silly extra check mark to add, in the rare case the AI would probably ever do it. I mean, the game's historical accuracy goes off the rails as soon as you unpause the game. It might try to lean towards it, but RNG is a fickle goddess.

However, its dimensions were comparable to the Suez Canal's, in both width and depth. The problem is that, since it connected to a river, even ships that could navigate the canal in theory were subject the whims of the Nile.

Is there anyway you could add canals to the random new world? I've had a handful of generated landmasses where a canal would be as feasible as Panama's.

Talking about Canals, Why not add a canal that was actually built in france during this timeframe: the "Canal du Midi" through the south of France to joint the atlantic and the mediteranean see?
Who knows the Grand Canal? ......Nobody knows the Grand Canal.:eek:o Paradox dev don't even know/add the Grand Canal(the longest canal or artificial river in the world), they should know/add a small Canal?

I wouldn't imagine it'd happen, since Paradox is hand drawing the art for the canals. The RNW is, well, random and they'd have no way to draw the art for every random place that might suit a canal.

The more I hear about WoN, the less-likely I am to buy it. Canals? Really?

STOP!

I remember proposing the idea of Trading Companies way-back-when on these forums. I like the idea of how they should be their own little power. But you really need to make them have "trading posts" a la CK2, not control actual provinces.

Again, the more I hear about WoN, all I want to do is a) not buy it, or b) if I do get it, to be able to turn off half these "features" -- no "canals" for me, thank you.

All I can say about reading these DDs is, "Jesus wept."
