During the duration of this war, I can not support the lifting of censorship. As such I can not support the American Wartimes Freedom Act at this time. I would support the Pacific Control Act with the amendment that Korea and Indochina go free. (I know we aren't voting, I just felt like stating my opinion)

Briefing: February 1, 1943

With our new budget for Fiscal Year 1943 firmly in hand, instructions were given to our Generals to attack the Axis as ferociously as possible. The President spoke with Prime Minister Churchill early New Year's Day and asked for a British assault on the key French port of St. Malo. The Prime Minister promised he'd do everything he could, but that elements within his high command were uneasy about the prospect of assaulting Hitler's Atlantic Wall.

Given the constant communication problems General Vandegrift, Commander of US 7th Army Corps, and General MacArthur have been experiencing, General MacArthur left operations in Norway to General Vandegrift's discretion. With the gloves finally off, the General aggressively planned to surround and assault German positions in southern Norway.

General MacArthur -- who truly seemed like a new man -- gave detailed instructions to Generals Marshall, Patton, and Taylor after the New Years' Festivities.

His Majesty, King Victor Emmanuel III, has even offered Italian assistance in securing the Balkans -- no doubt expecting territorial considerations after the war.

While Generals Patton and Marshall complained about having insufficient forces to complete their objectives, Generals Taylor and Vandegrift went to their tasks with a will. Allied troops were given a further boost of morale when German radio stations broadcast an address from Reichschancellor Hitler, who called upon "all men of Aryan blood to defend the Fatherland against the Bolshevik-lover President Willkie." I can tell you that President Willkie and I had a good chuckle over that! ((Germany fired the 'Defence' decision, which improves leader defense and increases global manpower.)) Generalissimo Stalin responded by formally dissolving the Third International and calling for unity between the Allied nations. President Willkie applauded this initiative in a stirring speech delivered late New Year's Day.

Progress on the German border was slow, but General Vandegrift was able to begin securing positions for an attack on the starving German forces by January 5.

On January 6, it was General Patton's turn to show his stuff, as he began an enveloping maneuver around the German left flank.

General Taylor had his own progress to report, as more and more of Greece was liberated by American troops.

Our first attempt to seize Ljubljana on January 16 failed, but American commanders did not lose hope and continued to press on. It was exactly that sort of attitude that shows how far the American serviceman has come since before the war. We are truly a veteran and battle-hardened army!

Inspired, General Vandegrift ordered his assault on Axis positions in southern Norway on January 18; those Germans who did not surrender immediately were too tired and hungry to resist our advance. Progress reports from the commanders of 1st, 2nd, and 4th Army showed similar, if not as dramatic, progress.

General Patton's "Hook to the Left", as some of our reporters have called it, continued to expand, while only Skopje remained of General Taylor's initial objectives. General Marshall's progress was somewhat slower, but he still moved ever closer to Munich. January 24 saw the last few German soldiers depart southern Norway on ships bound for POW camps in the UK, while American forces set about liberating Norwegian provinces.

With southern Norway well in hand, Generals Lawson, Scott, and Hickey, 3rd US Army Corps, struck northern Norwegian positions.

On January 28, Admiral Spruance, commander of TRG 'Providence', was ordered back to Norfolk to pick up four new infantry divisions and tank destroyer brigades. As February begins, the Allies are in various states of progress throughout Europe.

Norway:

Germany:

Balkans:

To celebrate his tremendous success, General Taylor has been given a new objective: Belgrade, or as the natives call it, Beograd, where we plan to meet up with Italian troops for an eventual thrust into Romania.

That concludes this briefing. I understand that several Senators have begun discussing some bills; the President has asked that you forward them to his desk for consideration prior to a vote.

Techs researched: Cruiser Crew Training 4, Large Navigation Radar 1
Convoys sunk (transports/escorts): 3/0 (Japanese)
Convoys lost (transports/escorts): 2/0 (by Japan)
Units built: 4 divisions of 3 x INF, 3 transports (deployed to Norfolk, VA)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Novatheorem, your PM wasn't entirely clear, so I went ahead and pulled back everybody in the Pacific but the subs for repairs. If you want to continue, let me know. Tom, you'll probably want some preliminary plans for hitting Romania and something to do with your four new infantry divisions and the 10 or so TD brigades. I completely forgot about northern Norway, or you'd have the Northern Command at your disposal too. As it is, you'll have them before the end of March, I bet.

Once I get a final version of the two bills being proposed, signed by both Senators, I'll put them up to an official vote. I'll see a deadline for the final version for Sunday at 10 PM (-6 GMT); we'll begin formal voting shortly after that, if not soon. I'd like all votes and/or plans done by next Friday at 10 PM (-6 GMT).

I am appalled at the response to the proposition of the American Wartime Freedom Act, and of Senator Osborns accusations that I am a Communist, Yes I am a socialist, Yes i do believe this war has been blown out of proportion, I may believe that we should let America be America and Russia be Russia, but to call me the enemy of These United States when I was one of the many brave men that stormed the beaches of Norway, I do not mean to boast, but many men have called me a war hero. How can my fellow Senators so openly oppose Totalitarianism, yet allow laws to be enacted that would be the stepping stones to a Totalitarian America, What is the point is slaying a monster, if you yourself become a monster in the process. I know that one of you will say that how can I, A Socialist, lecture you on Totalitarianism, and I will remind the good men and woman of the Senate that Socialism is an Economic Ideal, only when coupled with Totalitarianism or Radical Nationalism does it become Communism and Fascism. I will also remind the good people of the Senate that socialism is what got Heir Hitlers Germany out of the great depression before even These Great United States, and allowed the USSR to avoid it completely, so anyone claiming that Socialism is not an efficient Economic System has clearly not looked at the facts. I hope that my fellow Senators can now understand that my only goal is to Improve and protect These United States, and though I may disagree with you on how that should be done, we have the same intention.

Signed,

Lately, there have been arguments about the proposed Pacific Control Act, I myself do believe that Senator Sacketts proposal was a good start, I do believe that it was to vauge, and left out important clauses that made the bill seem a might bit to Imperialistic. I therefore have drafted my own bill, which addresses the same things Senator Sacketts proposal did, but in a much more detailed and Specific way. Ladys and Gentlemen of the Senate, I give you The Pacific-Asia Defense Act

Section 3

b) The Republic of China is guaranteed Independence by These United States

d) These United States recognize The Republic of Chinas Claim on the territories of Communist China, Xibei San Ma, Yunnan, Guangxi Clique, Manchuria and Taiwan
e) These United States Claim the territory of Dalian as a port from which to trade in East Asia

The Pacific-Asia Defense Act is fine as is. I'm not sure how much control we'll get over some of the stuff you're asking -- I REALLY don't want to have to edit the save to switch province ownership. We'll worry about that when we come to it.

This bill is not up for voting, yet, as I think there was at least one more bill bouncing around and under discussion.

I have found in my research that i have conducted on socialism that all facts the you said Socialism is great is a complete lie. By fact (by a Wikipedia Search) Hitlers Party won and brought Germany out of their Depression and the average lifespan in Soviet Russia is 49 years old 20 years behind ours. Nobody owns anything, people spend their entire lives in the factory's with all the same pay no matter how hard or weak they work, the people are constantly oppressed. Even a doctor who went through years and years through school gets the same pay as the average Joe. If America had gone through the same path of Socialism the war would be lost along time ago to the Extremists. The people would have no vote in their Government, it would be complete Anarchy. For example some other countries like Tanna Tuva and Mongolia would you really want to go live there. Again I urge all senators to not believe what senator hyde says Socialism has never work and it never will.

You are correct in saying that Hitlers party brought Germany out of the depression, this only validates my argument though, as you might recall that Heir Hitlers party is the National Socialist Party, as for your statement about the USSRs average lifespan, the USSR is a much more remote and primitive country, they live in much harsher conditions and have worse medical technology than that of These United States. As to accusations that socialism is an Oppressive Ideal i disagree entirely, yes, us socialist would put slight restrictions and regulations on the economy, but we seek in no way to oppress the people, it seems to me you are coupling Socialism with Totalitarianism, I will remind you that Totalitarianism is not something The Socialist Party of America supports. You Claim that a doctor getting paid the same as a worker is a bad thing, is it though? Is the farmer not as important as the Doctor, and the Worker as important as the politician. Without Workers or Farmers society would not function, we all fill a role in our community, and all of these roles are equally important, this is the very reason I myself refuse to be payed more than my states average wage. You say socialism in America would lead to anarchy, this is honestly one of the funniest statements i have ever heard, seeing as Socialism is very structured, and infact, Capitalism is closer to anarchy on the political compass than Socialism. Yes I would not want to live in Tanna Tuva or Mongolia due to there Totalitarian Stalinistic Communism, but, if it where not for that, i may be tempted. Mongolia has a literacy rate of 99%, While the latest Survey for These United States shows only 96%. It is true that socialism has yet to work, but seeing it has yet to be fully and properly instituted in a non Totalitarian Country, that is only to be expected.

Regulation and control are at the core of socialism. We already have to suspend several freedoms in the sacrifice in this great war, and to further give governmental power is a terrible path to take. A wise man once said that a great civilization like out's won't be destroyed from the outside, but from the inside.

(again with a simple Wikipedia search) Mongolia dose not have a 99% literacy rate they have a 68% literacy rate. Hitlers party National Socialist party is the complete opposite of Socialism and actually works. Yes i believe that a doctor should be paid more than the farmer because 1. The profession is Harder and requires mass amounts of training. 2. A doctor requires a very intelligent person unlike a farmer. 3. There are less doctors in Society than farmers. By no means am i saying a farmer or a worker is not important but is less complicated than a doctors job. Your Claim about Capitalism would lead to anarchy in Society i would like to ask yourselves the question why are we the greatest country in the greatest economy in the world, its is because of Capitalism and a Free market. Also look at Soviet union and USA which country is closer to complete Chaos right now. The answer is obvious. Don't tell me it is because of Stalin and it is his Totalitarian Ways they Still run the same economy you would run and other Socialists run. A recent poll that was taken in America suggested that 98.83% of the Population would leave the country under a Socialist Regime. America doesn't want Socialism and neither does the rest of the world. Please you fellow Senators don't let Senator Hyde blind Your thoughts.

Mr Speaker, Esteemed Colleagues, Americans,

I regard the Pacific Control Act to be a very important piece of legislation. I will therefore propose it as an alternative piece of legislation to Senator Hyde's.

HOWEVER, I am not willing to remove Indochina from France as such would be a clear violation of International Law. France is our Ally and they must be liberated and rebuilt.
What kind of people are we that would seek to strike a blow at our own side. Any suggestion of this nature should be subjected to serious reconsideration.

As to Senator Burns rejection of the American Wartime Freedoms Act I am shocked and appalled. I remind this body that he, himself has said "Regulation and control are at the core of socialism". This may be war, but this is also America. The Democrats seem to think that they have a God-giv'n right to control the people. That is why we must protect our freedoms ever more. This may be war, but the people of these United States will not tolerate the tyranny of the majority. That is why President Roosevelt lost in 1940. The voting public does not reward
those who trample on their rights!
In conclusion, I want to remind my fellow Senators that compromise is the key to democratic government and this is what I have offered here today. We must united in our efforts to help the American People.

Thank you Mr Speaker,
-F. M. Sackett R-KY

(As a side note I would like to ask any other republican for their nomination as minority whip or deputy minority leader. Also, I will be writing up full versions of both bills shortly.)

((The argument is fine; I encourage it! :) It was the Wartime Freedom Act I was thinking of.))

I've caught my self up and am loving this this AAR, I as hoping I could join. I've got a Senator to propose:

Name: Senator John Andersen of Colorado ((last I checked there are no Senators for this great State yet))
Born: 1902 (41 Years)
Party: Democrat

Policy ideas:
-- Foreign policy plans: This state of war is tragic, however, it presents America with an opportunity to reshape the world. America must voice its clear support for democracy and self determination as we did after the Great War, and our determined opposition to imperialism in all of its forms. While France and Italy both have allied governments, they have also had ones at war with us. We propose the complete dismantlement of French and Italian colonial holdings to follow a timeline similar to that to be imposed on our enemies. Furthermore, our erstwhile allies the Soviets will pose the greatest threat to democracy after the defeat of our present enemies. The United States must prepare for the possibility of further war, and prepare an alliance for this eventuality.

-- Budgets for IC: Expansion of our Airforce will allow us to utilize modern technologies and pave the way for the future. The proud state of Colorado is well placed and has the necessary infrastructure to begin accommodating rapidly expanding forces. Secondly, the current state of war allows the government the opportunity to continue the New Deal and continue industrial expansion to be returned to civilian use in peace time.

-- Budgets for leadership: Research will show the way to the future and must be the highest priority. While American espionage has had recent success, it must be remembered that the state of war is largely the result of the subversion and direct attacks on legitimate democratic governments. All efforts possible must be made to protect our freedoms domestically, and to support and restore legitimate democratic government elsewhere.

-- Declaring war/signing peace treaties: The long term prosperity of our nation depends on the expansion of democracy, self-government, and free trade. The defeat of our existing totalitarian enemies is a priority, however, we must examine whether the present conditions favor us in our inevitable conflict with the other totalitarian powers, most notably the USSR our erstwhile ally and Spain.

-- Which faction we align ourselves to, if any: Our current relationship with the allies should be increasingly conditioned upon their commitment to decolonization on a strict timeline. Our current presence in Southern Europe should be combined with strong alliances in Asia to create a potential new bloc should the need arise.

-- If one of the Big Four needs to be fired/replaced: I trust that the President can find a proper and intelligent replacement

-- Input on our general deployments overseas: We should make close ties with Nationalist China, while encouraging democracy, and set up friendly governments in Korea and Japan. Efforts in Europe should focus on heading east to deny the communists expansion, and increase our leverage in pushing the French to decolonize before liberating them.

-- All decisions and law changes: The maintenance and defense of liberty cannot infringe on liberty lest it become that which it fights. The freedoms of American citizens shall be the standard the world strives towards.

-- Nukes!: Civilian deaths and massive destruction if necessary will pave the way for a brighter world for all. ((Even if its because the Earth is glowing green.))
