This is my first AAR, and my first post! The promise of CK beta keys finally got me out of years of lurking and I made an account so I could post this AAR. :) I will write it as a history book/story mix, I hope you enjoy! First chapter will be rather short, but the second chapter will be split into two or three parts!

Due to just registering the game, I wasn't able to post the updates and all. So I will have to post them all together even if in seperate posts, sorry!

CHAPTER I: FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CLAN.

DATE MOCHIMUNE 1393 – 1470

DateLeader1.jpg

The news of the Onin War had reached Date Mochimune and he was quick to react. Old age had made Date Narimune venerable, constantly surrounded by servants for his everyday needs as he no longer could stand properly, but he was a good leader nonetheless. To better supervise his dominion he handpicked the loyal courtier, Date Fusadas, and gave him the regions of Uta and Okitama. He had ruled the Date Clan in relative peace for many decades and he was known for his wise rule.

But the war had changed him, he knew he would have to react quickly if he wanted his clan to survive; he began to plan the invasion of Mogami to strengthen his domain. Recently the tensions had grown between the clans, for Date Clan had never acknowledged Mogami as true governors of Tohoku region and only war would determine who was. He secured his family line by giving his son a woman to marry. The sudden war caused by Uesugi out of mere vengeance against Ashikaga-Koga had startled the old clan leader aswell; he was quick to exchange his daughter as hostages to keep the peace. But the mighty Uesugi Clan refused, which only worsened relations.

sengokumap15-1.jpg

The war had made Date Mochimune cautious of his neighbors. The Mogami, Osaki, Ashina and Uesugi were the largest threats for Date Clan. He secured the peace with Ashina by exchanging hostages while he turned his attention to the north. There was war all over Japan, and he had to react quickly if he wished for his clan to survive. After a year of preparation the war had begun between Date and Mogami. Date Clan had managed to rally five thousand strong Date kinsmen who pushed through the deep forest of Mogami region. The Date Clan outnumbered the enemy by at least a thousand which made Date Mochimune over-confident that they would win the war. But the Mogami were no fools, they tried to thin out the Date forces by a sudden forest ambush in the Mogami region. The Date forces suffered many numbers before they could react, but they managed to regroup and defeat the enemy forces.

SengokuForestbattle.jpg

But it would turn out these were not all of the enemy forces. The rest had gone past Date forces and laid siege upon Okitama castle which was almost defenseless. But Date Mochimune took the risks and ordered to continue the march on Mogami Castle. He had done wisely by doing so for the castle had less than two hundred men by their walls and a quick assault made them surrender.

It would seem the news reached the Mogami leader quickly as he rallied his remaining forces to protect his other provinces and led a desperate assault upon the superior Date forces. The enemy forces suffered severe losses which would end the possibility for Mogami victory. Though the war went well for Date Clan, they found themselves suddenly at war with another enemy. The misguided Clan Daihoij leader ,Daihoij Junuji, over ambitious to bring glory to himself attacked Date Clan.

While it could’ve meant the change of tides for Date Clan, it was not. The neighboring clan Nikaho took advantage of Daihoij Junuji’s foolish decision and invaded the province, aswell as defeating the Daihoij forces. By late 1469 Mogami had been defeated. Date Mochimune thought long and well of who should rule the unstable conquered regions, as revolts were his greatest fear. He installed two loyal courtiers, Date Haruhino and Harunaga as kokujins of the conquered provinces.

Date Mochimune would take the first steps that would lead Date Clan to greatness. In January 1470 after accomplishing the conquest he died suddenly in his sleep at the age of 78. His son and heir Date Narimune becomes clan leader, with ambitions of his own…

CHAPTER II: A MAN’S AMBITIONS.

DATE NARIMUNE 1435 – 1499

PART I

DateLeader2.jpg

The death of Date Mochimune had left Date Narimune control of his father’s clan. He mourned for months after his demise and he married another two women to silence his sorrow, but it would never be enough. Though a large celebration was held for the new clan leader, the man himself never attended as he remained in his chambers that day. Date Narimune was quiet of himself during his early reign, spending much of his time mourning. But he was cautious aswell; he had no allies around him, not even his own kokujins. None of them truly supported him, one of the kokujins was even revealed to plot against him. The once proud and honorable Date Fusada had betrayed the trust of Date Mochimune by attempting to betray his son. Date Narimune exposed him of his shameful deed which brought only dishonor to Date Fusada. But the troublesome Kokujin did not stop there, in late 1471 a ninja managed to bypass every security in the Igu region and had sneaked into Date Narimune’s sleep chambers. But the ninja made a sudden slip and had awoken Date Narimune who was quick to react on the assassin, ready to hold onto his dear life.

The Night Watch of Igu.
SengokuNightWatch.jpg

The sudden frightened groans of Narimune brought his bodyguards inside his chambers. If they had been only seconds late the ninja would’ve pierced right through the leader’s chest, but they managed to outmaneuver the ninja and put him into custody, but not before two samurais were slain. Narimune requested immediate interrogation. After a few days rhe ninja admitted to be hired by the shameful Date Fusada. Once again Narimune revealed him of his traitorous deed. Fusada had shamed his family and their honor. There would be only one way Fusada could restore his honor; Seppuku. In early 1473 Fusada committed seppuku as demanded by his liege, leaving the leadership of his regions to his infant son, Date Geza.

Date Fusada, shortly before his seppuku ritual.
FusakaCommitingSeppuku.jpg

After this event the clan leader began to turn attention to other matters. The mourning of his father had passed and he had his own ambitions. Unlike his father, he did not look north for conquest. He looked south, upon Ashina and Soma. Soma Clan had recently won a glorious victory upon the lesser Nihonmatsu Clan and Narimune abused this. The Date leader demanded subjection from the war exhausted Soma Clan, or they would face the might of the Date Clan. But the proud Soma leader refused, they had more honor than to surrender even if weakened. If they are to be defeated, then let it be in battle.

Map3.jpg

In early 1474 the Date Clan was lunged into war again. Date Narimune was still not popular amongst his kokujins, especially after forcing Fusaka to commit Seppuku. But he was just, and he knew it was the right thing to do. Date Narimune managed to rally seven thousand strong Date kinsmen for their war against Soma. Date Narimune himself led his forces as they entered the Asaka. It would be here they would climax with the main Soma host. The soma leader was a war veteran while Date Narimune had yet to prove himself. Date Narimune had split his host in two, one for a crushing charge and the other for a sneak flank at the Soma archers. The Soma held their ground during the battle, but the flank succeeded and the Soma archers were taken down. But this was not the end for the enemy forces, they had caused many casualties upon the main front leaving the other half of Date forces in disarray.

Date Narimune ordered for a tactical retreat to regroup, trying to regroup with their flank to defeat the Soma host. Outnumbered and weakened, the Soma forces were eventually taken down by the united Date forces. The seven thousand strong had defeated the five thousand strong Soma forces, but less than two thousand had fled along with the Soma leader. Glorious victory was at hand, and the Asaka Castle was besieged. When they eventually crushed the defenes and broke through, they pillaged and raided the whole castle. When they left, the castle was in flames.

SengokuCastleRaid.jpg

Though they had the upper hand with the defeat of Soma forces and burning of Asaka Castle, the news had reached Narimune. Date Castle burned and the Soma flag was set high upon its walls. The two thousand strong Soma forces had managed to take Date region and now marched upon the Igu region. Date Narimune cursed himself. The great battle had left him with only four thousand men left, and splitting them would make him vulnerable. But in the end, he had his father’s bravery as he risked it all by splitting up his forces. He gave Date Haruhiro the command of his other half which consisted mostly of cavalry and sent him to cease the siege of Igu Castle and retake Date province if possible.

shoguns_by_supafly_01-d3j5g2t.jpg

Date Narimune continued the march upon remaining Soma regions. He sieged the venerable Iwaki castle and it was quick to fall due to poor castle defenses. However, the neighboring province Namekata had impressive castle improvements. Date Narimune feared that a prolonged siege would be costly and mean the loss of his other half of forces, currently fighting within their own borders. He turned his host around, and marched for Date region. There he united with Date Haruhiro’s forces. Their battle with Soma had not boded well, and only a handful of men lived. Less than a thousand rejoined the main host, as they were now three thousand strong.

Together they ceased the siege of Igu Castle, and the enemy forces were annihilated. The last bastion of Soma clan, Namekata, fell months afterwards. By year 1477, Soma Clan had been conquered. Even for his failure, Date Haruhiro was rewarded for his bravery and given much of the former Soma lands. But Namekata had been given to Date Harutomo, a loyal courtier.

Meanwhile, in the west…

SengokuONINWARintro.jpg

The Onin War had ended after eleven years of war and ended the threat of Hosokawa clan. The Hosokawa forces met defeat in the capital of the Emperor. Outnumbered by united forces, the Hosokawa forces were annihilated and shattered. But the war still continued. The desperate Hosokawa tried to regain control and get the upper hand, but it was too late. Their allies had already fallen, and they soon followed. With the Onin War having been won by Yamana Clan, the Ashikaga Clan was succeded by the rightful heir and son of the former Shogun.

But after the war, a rivalry began between Ouchi Clan and Hatakeyama clan in dispute of who would own what, and in the end it became war. Otomo Clan was quick to abuse the opportunity to strengthen their dominion, and attacked Ouchi Clan from behind. The Yamana Clan remains supreme in the west, plotting in silence of their upcoming war. Rokkaku continue their own war against remnants of Hosokawa followers, ever determined to remove the threat of Hosokawa ever rising again.

SengokuWest2-1.jpg

A time of short peace would sweep through the war torn land of Date Clan however. Narimune became a firm believer of Shinto, and many Shinto shrines were built out of respect. He was well known for his great honor now, and his prowess in battle. He had gained the respects of his kokujins, even Date Gaze whose father had been forced to commit seppuku. Under his reign the Date Clan had almost become twice as large as they were before. He was acknowledged as a true leader, a great leader. The hostage from Ashina had been returned decades ago, and now Ashina laid in fear as Date Clan regained their numbers..

Date Clan held many festivals and competitions during their time of peace.

CHAPTER II: A MAN’S AMBITIONS.

PART II

DATE NARIMUNE 1435 – 1499

DateLeader2.jpg

Date Narimune had planned the the invasion to conquer Ashina Clan patiently for several years and recruited a fierce army of fifteen thousand kinsmen. Though Date Narimune’s orginal plan was to strike from Okitama, it proved to be a foolish plan. The mountains which lay between Okitama region and Yama Region would’ve cause severe casualties and possibly the defeat of the clan. Instead he gathered his host at the previous raided region of Asaka. He was greeted by disgust and distrust from the locals, who had not forgotten his earlier burning of the castle.

Map2.jpg

But the eventually war would have to wait. His son Date Mochimune, who had been named after his father, had died of a sudden illness. It wounded Date Narimune gravely, and he held a great funeral ceremony for his son’s passing. Date Narimune had fathered seven children, where three had died now, His two daughters and his son. His next eldest son, Date Akikage, is nominated with support of his loyal kokujins.

DATE MOCHIMUNE 1470 – 1481

DeathofDateheir.jpg

After mourning had passed, the war began in year 1482. Fifteen thousand strong Date forces pushed into Yama from Asaka. Ashina Clan was taken in surprise, their forces were still scattered as Date Narimune invaded but five thousand enemy forces managed to mobilize and stood ready to defend Yama with their lives. Narimune used his Date archers wisely and rained down death upon the lesser enemy forces, and then led a personal cavalry charge. The weak five thousand enemy forces were scattered and slaughtered, less than a thousand manage to retreat. Yama Castle was besieged and quickly taken by the overwhelming numbers.

But at the same time Ashina had managed to go past the main host of Date forces and laid siege to both Asaka and Date, they both fell almost immediately. Date Narimune split his host in two, once again lending Date Haruhino his other half to ride for the Ashina forces within their borders. Date Narimune continued his conquest and took the remaining defenseless reginons of Ashina. Date Haruhiro eventually faced the fearless Ashina leader Ashina Moritaka at Namekata.
Though Date Haruhiro lost many forces in a dareful outmaneuver, he succeded to surround the enemy and annihilated the whole force. Ashina Moritaka was taken hostage and then banished from his homeland. The war was over in late 1485 and his four kokujins, Date Genzo, Harutomo, Harunaga, Haruhiro shared the conquered regions. At the same year Date Narimune accepted an hostage exchange with his neighboring clan Osaki. Date Narimune had no desires to wage war with Osaki clan, and in fact it was rumored he was a good friend of the Osaki Daiymo, Osaki Masakane.

In early 1487 he declared war upon the clan who had assisted them before against Daihoji clan, Nikaho Clan. In Narmiune’s eyes they posed as a weak and vulnerable clan, and under his great leadership their people will be safe from harm. The campaign was short and in less than a year Nikaho Clan’s forces had been annihilated and their lands conquered. While Narimune’s true intention was to merely subject them to his dominion, they had refused, even as their castles burned and their people died. The fall of Nikaho Clan would give Narimune his first daimyo title, daimyo of Uzen.

Map4.jpg

The next few years Date Narimune had put away the sword to rule the dominion properly. During these years he gained a hobby of sword collecting, as his chamber walls were decorated with all kind of samurai swords from all over Japan. Date Narimune had ordered full renovations on Igu castle and even got several castle additions built, such as the Castle tower watch. In Date region he had made the market larger, as it became a great hub of trade. While Date Narimune enjoyed the good stability and prosperity of his dominion, he was a warrior. He had ambitions, great ones. He had dreamed of the day where he would challenge the Uesugi Clan and dominate the east, and this was his time.

Uesugi Clan had been at war with Rokkaku for many years, which had weakened the clan greatly. Date Narimune felt bold enough to attack at this very moment, but instead, he waited. Waited, for the right time to strike..

CHAPTER II: A MAN’S AMBITION.

PART III

DATE NARIMUNE 1435 – 1499

DateLeader2.jpg

It had become known that Narimune had become obsessed to gain glory by defeating the Uesugi clan. In late 1494 he managed to raise an army of twenty thousand, an eager and loyal army. He had given Date Geza control of five thousand and positioned him in Okitama, Date Haruhino had been given the same amount and positioned in Yama. They were his most loyal and most experienced generals so they were no doubt the best choice. Date Narimune kept the rest for himself and rallied his kinsmen in Kita-Aizu. The Uesugi defenses were weak if any, most troops were in west fighting the Rokkaku clan and this could prove an easy victory for Date Clan.

Map5.jpg

But Date Narimune feared that Rokkaku Clan may fall soon and the Uesugi will return to their own borders to fight off the aggressors. Ambition and bravery kept him away from abandoning the attack upon Uesugi, however. He had observed the Uesugi leader carefully, a man known as Uesugi Fuyuki. He was known for his cruelty, even against his own Daiymos and Kokujins. It was said many plotted against him, but no one dared to do the first move upon this fearsome clan leader. He led the clan with an iron fist.

When Date Clan was almost on the verge at declaring war, something occurs in Southern Uesugi..

Ikko-IchiIntro-1.jpg

Uesugi had been at war with Rokkaku for decades, and finally the people rebelled against him. The Ikko-Ikki had wounded the Uesugi greatly. With no forces to stop them the Ikko-Ikki manage to firmly secure themselves in the south. This only pleased Date Narimune though; the Ikko-Ikki could only make the war less difficult. But the Ikko-Ikki rebellion made other clans bold aswell. In early 1495 Ogasawara Clan declared war upon Uesugi Clan. Date Narimune was hesistant at first, but he was quick to join the war shortly afterwards. The split Date forces occupied the nearby regions of Kanbara, Nutari and Kita-Ounama. They proved difficult to besiege, over two thousand men stood behind the walls in each castle. It became a prolonged siege, as they were forced to starve them out until they surrendered.

Map.jpg

Eventually the other regions followed and the Date Clan claimed region by region without any true resistance. But then the war with Rokkaku Clan ended and the Uesugi kinsmen were returning to their borders. Date Narimune had postioned his forces in the provinces of Kanbara, Koshi and Minami Aizu when the news reached him, he would surely be outnumbered if Uesugi Clan brought their whole might, but he had to remind himself that he was not alone in this war. Ogasawara Clan had claimed the nearby regions of Minmi Uonuma and Tone, but they had been losing great amount of southern regions to the returning Uesugi forces.

In year 1496, before the main host had arrived, Uesugi managed to assemble a new impressive force of fifteen thousand. A few skirmishes began between the main host of Date and the newly assembled Uesugi force before a true battle broke out. Date Clan had managed to claim Kita-Uonuma, but not for long. A handful of two thousand kinsmen of Haruhiro’s host had survived the siege and they would soon face another army. Five thousand strong Uesugi kinsmen had gotten a hill position and begun an attack against the Date forces. They rained down arrows upon their weakened numbers, in disarray and desperation Haruhiro made the foolish choice not to retreat as he ordered his men to charge the enemy archers

The desperate assault led by Haruhiro.
DesperateAssaultofDateClan.jpg

They were massacred. Only Haruhiro and his bodyguards had returned to tell the grim news to Date Narimune, but he said not even a word. Date Clan had lost their first battle in this war, and it wounded their morale greatly. Being pushed back, Date Narimune had gathered what remained of his host and positioned himself in Koshi. They clashed into battle with ten thousand Uesugi forces against nine thousand Date forces. Though it would’ve seemed they would face crushing defeat, the Date spearmen held the line as great amount of Uesugi forces charged into their deaths. It would prove to be a glorious victory, with a loss of two thousand while the enemy forces lost five thousand. The tide of battle had changed again by year 1497. Date Narimune had been at war for several years, and he was physically getting torn by the war. It was said he became weak as he grew older, and the amount of bodyguards had doubled during battles.

Date Spearmen, shortly before clashing with the Uesugi Cavalry.
SengokuSpearmenalt.jpg

It was a great victory and it had given the Date forces morale. And if that wasn’t enough, reinforcements of five thousand joined the main host from northern regions of Date Clan. Twelve thousand strong, they pushed for the offensive. But their victory would be short lived, as the main Uesugi host arrives to the field of battle.

Main host of Uesugi forces returning from their campaign in western Japan.
8ccba_news_Total-War-Shogun-2-Rise-of-the-Samurai-627x246-1.jpg

The Date forces were sent fleeing again. The Uesugi had a fearsome force of twenty thousand. The Uesugi forces were in hot pursuit, and they finally catched up with Date forces in Minami Aizu. In year 1499 December the final battle would be decided. Twelve thousand strong Date forces against twenty thousand Uesugi were to face battle. Date Narimune held the line as the overwhelming forces crushed through their ranks and left them scattered. Fighting in every direction, Date Narimune had found himself lost amongst enemy forces, his bodyguards nowhere to be seen.

he was already known as legendary warrior during his glorious conquests and in this battle Date Narimune fought fiercely. It would be said he took down fifteen if not twenty samurais before he spilled a drop of sweat. But even legends die.

samurai_archers_by_supafly_01-d3aokwv.jpg

Arrows rained down upon Date Narimune as several struck through his thick armor and touched his flesh. The Uesugi Archers had struck him from behind, but Date Narimune would not fall at that point. In fearsome rage, he would cut down several more samurais before his strength began to fade away. Falling to his knees, he fell into the snowy terrain. The grip of his closest companion loosened, and the great leader took his final breath as he saw his forces retreat..

DeathofDateLeader.jpg

Their leader lost and their forces scattered, will Date Clan survive? Stay tuned for more!

Just a reminder about the rules on screenshots - you can only have 20 per post and not more than 1 post per hour

having said which - great and very atmospheric AAR

Yes, yes, I know. I did mention why I posted like I did though. I didn't want to post it all together and I thought posting it seperately will be better for the readers. Plus I was bit in a hurry to post them all, before that whole Monday deadline. :) I hope that's alright. But anyways, thanks!

EDIT: I will probably put up another post by the end of this weekend! I wonder how many actually read my stuff though, heh. :)

CHAPTER III: GLORY TO THE DATE CLAN.

PART I

DATE AKIKAGE 1473 – 1537

DateLeader3.jpg

(I will fix this picture in the next update!)

Akikage was a loving person aswell as a trusting one. He was a common favourite in the the court and everyone voted for him as the clan heir. But the great defeat at Minami-Aizu and the death of his father had scarred Akikage greatly. He would leave the safety of Igu Castle and took personally command of what little remained of his father’s forces to avenge their fallen. They were less than eight thousand while the fearsome Uesugi clan had a number of over ten thousand. But Akikage feared not, the desire for vengeance fueling his hate against Uesugi.

Map9.jpg

The defeat at Minami-Aizu had sent them fleeing to Kita-Ounuma. The Uesugi clan had managed to lay besiege upon Agatsuma, Tone and Minami-Aizu, beginning to reclaim much of their land from the Date clan. Ogasawara clan was in danger aswell; their armies had been crushed in both south and north. Now their forces lay scattered and getting picked off by the superior Uesugi forces. While victory seemed grim, Akikage had a plan. He gathered his weak host and began his travel to Agatsuma. The Uesugi forces were few and generally outnumbered in Agatsuma compared to the even weakened forces of Date Clan. In early 1500 Akikage launched his first offensive upon Uesugi Clan and managed to crush the forces in Agatsuma and shatter them completely. His fierce mix of archer fire and cavalry charge broke the enemy forces’ defense line swiftly.

Akikage leads the cavalry charge personally along with his bodyguards.
cavalry_charge_by_supafly_01-d3dthmi.jpg

But they had suffered forces aswell, a weak number of five thousand date kinsmen remained after a short and bloody battle. The Uesugi forces in Tone had a force of four thousand and defeat seemed likely when Tone enjoyed much hills and forest. Defeat seemed likely if Akikage dared to attack. It was a risk he would not attempt; instead he would hold his ground. Reinforcements led by the well-known Haruhiro were arriving from the north. Haruhiro had become a close friend to Narimune during their long campaigns, and he too sought vengeance for his leader.

Before reinforcements would arrive, a miracle would happen that would save the very existence of Date clan. The great clan Yamana had plotted against their rivals Uesugi for several years and had finally declared war. The plot was supported by Satake clan, Toki clan and Ouchi clan, and in early 1502 Uesugi was at war with all of the greater clans. Morale was renewed aswell as strength for the Date forces. The Satake clan pushed from the east with a fearsome force of over fifteen thousand, annihilating any resistance on its path.
Akikage merged together with forces led by Haruhiro and together they became ten thousand strong. While Tone castle had fallen to the enemy, it was quickly retaken when Akikage led the attack upon Uesugi forces. They split up in middle of battle as Haruhiro led his forces in a flank, surrounding the enemy and leaving no survivors. Tone castle was then besieged and retaken, but much of the city burned due to constant sieges.

siege_by_supafly_01-d49q02n.jpg

They pushed further as they reached Minami-Aizu Castle. The castle was entirely in flames, but its defenders stood bravely at the walls and they would defend until last man. Date forces would engage enemy forces in a full on battle, men from each side fell into their own blood and shame in the first climax. Akikage had lost his bodyguards during that battle, but he fought on fiercely. He fought his way to the enemy general, slaying every samurai who tried to stop him. He had vowed for vengeance and he would get it. The enemies were on the run as Akikage managed to catch up with the enemy general. It would turn out to be Koga-Ashikaga Shigejiu, leader of Koga-Ashikaga clan. He had been spared by Uesugi and now he fought for his former enemies. But as Akikage was about to send the killing blow upon the general, he was suddenly cut down by an enemy bodyguard..

He was found in the deep forest, wounded and dying. But he was saved, and within months he was able to ride a horse once again. But the wound would scar him for life, and pain him each day. It would be a memory of his failure for vengeance. Haruhiro had passed away suddenly, shortly after the battle. Many would say it was out of the massive grief he had for the loss of his friend, but some said it was simply his time.

The tides of battle had been changed once more as now Uesugi forces were defeated and on the run, while Akikage now managed to conquer vast amounts of land and pushed for the offensive. While their main force may have been defeated, many castles had garrisons with over three thousand men which could hold out for years, only prolonging the already long Uesugi campaign. While much would fall under Date clan conquest, a final battle would park between united forces of Ogasawara, Date and Satake against remaining Uesugi forces in Gunma. The enemy was crushed as soon as they entered battle due to allied forces having greatly superior forces. In the confusion of battle, Koga-Ashikaga found himself amongst Akikage, and they had their final battle. Akikage slew him swiftly, a great cut through his chest which would claim his final breath. He had gotten his revenge.

Death of Koga-Ashikaga.

The uesugi were losing on all fronts, and their castles slowly getting besieged, the end was near for this once great clan..
