I hope paradox took economic ideas or at least inflation advisor...
Dear OP, i never bought a pdx title at full price, as they are nearly always on steam sales, or on humble bundle, or keys on ebay, etc. etc.
Made exception for last two expansions, i admit.

I've always thought Paradox games had some of the cheapest expansions around. Compared to Blizzard's $50 expansions or EA's Sims4 expansions, $15 is nothing.

EU3 had 4 "expansions" over almost 4 years, EU4 has had 6 in 2 years.

EU3 had 2 people working on expansions (and not 100% of the time) IIRC. Each EU4 expansion (not counting RP) has had significantly more dev hours put into it than their EU3 counterparts.

I don't get what makes the old expansion model better than the current one. It's essentially the same thing but without the optional free patches.

Well tbh i think overall we pay slightly more when we buy full price + Graphics/Music DLCs - like 20%-30% more i'd guess at full price.
When buying only Content at Full price it still might be 10%...

Hard to say, but i am fine with it as it produces much much more good Content in much much shorter spans then in the past.

EDIT:
When buying Content at full price and the Rest at reduced it still is like 15%

Note:
Inflation allready taken into account.

about 60 euros at year, considering the new "dlc every three months" policy.
Fair, much content than old system

I guess it is a matter of how you look at it op, i love that the game is changing and gladly buy the updates that paradox makes. Makes it a dynamic game, i grant you that you don't get the same if you don't pay for the DLC's (do you work for free?, the millions bought the original work hours), but in my view it is supporting the games i like. (even buy the art stuff when it is on sale even thou i don't care one bit for the looks of the army's :p )
If you are OK with the base game or the DLC's you have lock the game to that version, no one is stopping you.
I have bought games from other game companies where they take the 40€-50€ and never change anything regardless of bugs.

One thing to consider: Paradox is not making "P2W" games. "Pay to Win." It's not like other companies where you need to buy DLC to a) reach a new level cap, b) open new areas of the map, c) get the biggest/baddest weapons.

The basic game lacks some "chrome" (events, sprites, music) and certain mechanics without the DLC, but you still get to play a global, full-course-of-history game of EUIV.

Consider Paradox' "even-more-evil" peers in the gaming industry when you weigh in on the topic.
