I am against hard coded historical events a la EU2, e.g. on date X an event fires to trigger such and such a historical war, every time, regardless of the context happening in the game.

100% agreement, and Paradox had it in Vicky, too. It just broke the illusion of reality to see seomthing "poof" into existence because that was the way it happened at that date in history, despite the fact that history in the game had taken several major turns in the road and could no longer reasonably be expected to produce that event.

What I would like to see is something very much akin to Magna Mundi Gold for EU3/NA: a mod that is meticulously researched for all the might-happens and could-bes in history, and applies these if a host of triggers occur, first. Nothing feels out of place. Events are many and historical, within the context of history-as-you-make-it, not history as it is no longer relevant to your current game.

Given some of the excellent modders already at work in Rome, I suspect we'll see a project like this once the game settles down into some semblance of balance.

In the second case you're not getting things handed to you on a platter. Also, you're not getting into situations you would normally avoid but can't because in another time line some of the rulers were idiots. This is especially annoying when the situation created by the historical event makes no sense within the game you're playing.

A similar unwanted situation may still arise, but if the unforeseen event makes sense then the game remains internally consistent, at the price of not following history books blindly (I'm still for trying to follow history books, just not doing it blindly, or forcing the game in that direction regardless of player and AI actions).

I can see your point, anyway I can't compare the huge fun I had in all my historical or ahistorical games with Vicki, Hoi2 and EU2 with the very poor fun i have with EU3 and Rome.
