  • Finnal Alliance: Finland is now a vassal of Norway; this brings advantages to both sides. The Finns are no longer the target of every Germanic adventurer with two ducats to rub together and ambitions to build a kingdom, and Norway can call on two thousand heavily armed, violent drunks.
  • Toujours en Vedette: Of the roughly twenty years of this session, Anund was at peace for two months - just long enough to get the Finnish vassalisation and bring the levies home from Scotland. In particular: I finished the Brothers' War, imprisoning Tyke. I lost the Conquest of the Orkneys after the one-province count managed to attract a Holy Order to his cause, giving him about twice my army. I won the brutal Irish Holy War for the Nordreyjar, in which the Faeroes changed hands three times and Ireland was burnt to a crisp by Norse troops and their wild Finn confederates; the blot-trees hung heavy with Irish highborns for years after the peace. Even the French and the Scots learned not to interfere in Norse business; for two years a King of Scots languished in a Norse dungeon, though the peace treaty unfortunately specified that he should escape the blot-trees. There was a minor Catholic rebellion, and then the big one: I went after Sweden for Uppsala, where Bjørn the Traitor-King cut down the Great Grove, and a church of the White Christ stands where there were houghs and holy stones. As one might expect, that war goes well; Odin favours his faithful and there is no strength in the faith of slaves.
  • Toujours en Toilette: Like his grandfather, Anund survived multiple diseases. In his case, however, they were Nausea, Diarrhea (twice) and Malaise. Nowhere near as dignified, especially on campaign.
  • As Below, So Above: I, too, have been struck down by Fever, Nausea, and Diarrhea, as indeed have the Queen of Men, Crown Princess of Men, and Prince of Men. The next patch should definitely reduce the spread and harshness of these events. But as we've gone ten thousand years without a serious patch, just mods that let the players improve the experience themselves, I'm not holding my breath. Anyone want to mod stomach bugs out of this?
  • Into the Monk: I'm not going to make fun. I'm just going to say that this is actually a name/nickname combination that a Finnish Messalian can acquire. It's just as well he has Martial through the roof.
  • The Stubborn Englishry: Hadogei, having hammered England into one, intended to invade Denmark - or so he thought. But Odin, as noted, protects his faithful; England-south-of-Thames, and Cornwall and Wales, are in revolt. There will be no vengeance for the Great Heathen Host in this decade.
  • The Orders of Chivalry: In the pursuit of balance we activated all the Holy Orders for the played religions. I opine that the Jomsvikings, all 750 of them at full strength, are not really a balance for five Christian HOs each several thousand strong, but I'll take what I can get; the Christians were already active.

Norwegian Revolts for Increased Council Power: 3. I let this one through as it came at an inconvenient time.

On the Banks of the Tigris

Chapter 4: Brothers War, Greatness Emerges

Muharram 18, 285 (February 13, 898)

A man sits at a table, on which is a map. He looks up lovingly at the man sitting next to him, the only other in the room. “No one will ever know, it’s not like the guards will enter unless I tell them to”

“No my emir, we must focus on the war, now is not the time.”

Aoi9tkw4lOelSKLaOsqwrnkXnvcY36sdQKYyS3GPDFRN12C6HmD3Cqe7IvcisR456qP0tjGy8j9uN1wO6333j2Ms-in7qmmG4fCO7ABcS-d2iQvWA1VI0EX8jxefDm9DEgQ-iagh

The man sighs, “You are always so focused on the work”

“I am protecting your birthright.”

“Yes, well, I suppose we should get back to focusing on the wa...what is that?”

Suddenly, there is a sound that seems to be like the swirling of blades. Emir Abdul was about to call for his guards as he turned around, but instead of assassins that had somehow sneaked through, he saw a pale man sitting on the sofa behind him, unarmed. “Why hello there!” The Emir suddenly drew back, and then a look of panic spread across his face.

“Who are you, what do you want, how did you get in here, what is the meaning...”

“My dear Emir, or should I say Sultan Abdul, calm yourself. Allow me to explain. My name is...not important right now, but what is important is that I am more powerful than you can possibly imagine. I’m not the devil, the... Shaytān... Think of me as an angel of sorts. I am here because your line has the potential for greatness, and I seek to unlock that greatness. I don’t just want to make you Sultan, I want your line to be Caliph, in return for some minor tribute to me, nothing much compared to the vast empire you will one day control. I have already joined you in this closed and locked room with no windows and guards at the door, and soon I will disappear the same way. You know I am no ghost or mental apparition, as you both see me. Use your faith, your belief in the supernatural, whatever it takes, but believe what I say. If I wanted you dead, I would have already done it.” “That’s not entirely true, but he doesn’t need to know that” the man thought, before continuing. “But if you refuse still, take this book, read through it. It will give you all the advice you need. If it proves to be false, burn it, and never think of this encounter again. I can see, I will know. But if it proves to be true...think about it. Oh, and don’t worry about your...friend. Where I come from, such...attachments do not concern us one way or another. Farewell, I shall see you anon (oh how I love using that word).” And in the blink of an eye he was gone. The Emir and his companion looked at each other for a moment, and then at the large book sitting in front of them. Slowly, the Emir reached over, opened the book to the first page. After glancing over some warning not to read ahead, he looked at the first entries.

“You know, that’s not a bad idea... just move some troops there, siege that castle...” His companion grabbed him by the waste.

“You know, after that, I think perhaps a distraction is indeed in order.” And with that, he kissed him on the lips.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So after taking control of a not terribly useful character in an at first glance poor starting position, things snowballed fairly quickly by my standards. Not only that, but this character is probably my ticket to anything more than minor actor on a stage far too big for me. You shall see why in a bit, but sufficed to say I titled him “Abdul the Undying.” Really made Vaniver mad. Anyway, This is Emir Abdul of Tigris, at war with his much larger brother the Caliph to the north for control over the large and lucrative Emirate of Baghdad. As it turns out, the Caliph had almost no levies for whatever reason, so taking the duchy was fairly easy.
OqVRKiyP5yeMdOvNPkFf35Ui6_jg8wMkUY6jpYg6KxjaC0tC48SOCTyYOUIU9juyIrrS3jEQBVKuyziTiitU1K__Jxch7zJsIGz7w50DzKtvecNnx1kYfdFTApFeRYGQQAecpYd2
This is my domain after the successful conquest. Note that the Caliph, off to my left, still holds the primary name, but not for long. I had hoped to usurp his title, but gaining the caliphate turned out to be more...difficult...than I had hoped. Rest assured, soon it shall be mine, and the world will tremble, or at least maybe bob a little in the breeze. I don’t know.
sGVwqLqGBvPHK2Yfj4CH-A4TGf8G2ztOfF9zRpyfXeCSgs0G1jfTlMA98QOHdR0xyHpE3QO81Xim-5JEEZfAkTaLeopxTpS7LAXPyPXIfN0iEsIRBLIWMp1Jiz9dd3ScZH8I423E
This is my first of many sons born during the session. Nothing special other than that juicy Sayyid trait which I couldn’t keep anyway, but still. So. Many. Kids. Once I get a few generations down and his kids are out of the running for Muslim Succession I am going to have a lot of dynasty members to give lands to for later if need be.
pVXDim1AH8F4oHq56xqFyheNoMQptFuhO_gxbcZg0qzILjYcgMo3w1Ni5Xm4G47ygzCCHswlZiUTXGPrOaDH77QTCwDrmqTzzGkmCjOCEUOGpJzETu86TBKRwKMliBE1aH3ne1Bx
Most of the session was spent taking counties by de jure claim or straight up conquest if need be, with the end goal being the Sultanate of Mesopotamia (which I achieved).
9QmCnlgBsTfczt8YG0wEVPKPvqSPBnJxQ9LgjDmQ3ZkCsC4rUoZBIAOF4dI99DM1JtjuDUW0tvCaJ1roSYjWOeWjwfy0NAqNeAGdq41TdQXIQWbYx_mVSgubDiaQBEANR9Slb0hq
And here is the end of the session. Note that my dude is 50, with substantially better traits and stats than before, now with additional Sultanate, and he's just getting going. Not sure why the Abbasid dynasty flag is black, but I’m sure it’s fine. Just ignore the modern black flagged Muslim state near that area, and everything will be fine. Either way, not a bad start all things considered. Also notice the Fatimids, and the general bordergore in the area. Anyway, that’s it for the first look at my new digs, next time see just how old this guy gets, and other useful bits and bobs to get everyone up to speed.
SONS OF THE NILE
ضوء واحد في الظلام
~ A Light in the Darkness ~
In the wake of our defeats, we were humbled. From a moment of great darkness, we were brought into the light of Allah. Now, we are united, reformed, and prepared for the wars ahead. Blood shall be spilled, and darkness will be cast across the land. For now, however, we have peace. The crisis is over, and from Aswan, Mouses the Great has returned our land to stability. In his name, we have returned glory to our land, and the clans of Hedarabia have been reunited. The chaos is over.
LnvRovl.png
The Near-Caliph
And yet, he passed by in a brief, fleeting moment. Just as soon as he was at the peak of his life, he was dead. After forty-five years of life, he was brought down by Camp Fever - and with him, the dream of reuniting the Caliphate. He was a fleeting moment of both glory and rest for our people, and he will be remembered fondly for his many victories. It was under his wisdom that we subjugated the Christians, and he shall be remembered fondly for his return to the people’s way.
Now his son, Mouses II reigns in Aswan, although he does not intend to remain long. Instead, upon the advice of his advisors, he has turned his attention to Hindustan, hoping that their healthy lands might provide refuge from the blazing sands which caressingly surround the Nile. In the streets they speak of a madman, taken by his work and a faltering mind - but he insists with a passion indistinguishable from pain that this effort is for the people, and for his people, he will do anything.
The Kingdom of Ruthenia, worried about growing muslim power across the Mediterranean asked the Pope to declare a crusade for Andalusia. England, Ireland and Ruthenia would attend. Ruthenia would be declared the winner of this Crusade but the Lands of Southern Spain were given to Girl of the age of 12, betrothed to the King of Ruthenia. After a few well placed Knives the Duke of Albany, a vassal of the King of Ireland (James) inherited southern Spain.
Italy missed this session and continued its revolt spiral.
Southern Spain(Vaniver) fought desperately to fight off the Crusaders recieving over 1000 Gold in foreign aid but the arrival of the Knights Templar and Knights of St John, alongside the England and Irish brought a swift Defeat. Combined with a massive revolt in North Africa the Ibm Malta dynasty has been reduced to a miniscule amount of territory and thus Vaniver is now the 1st Casualty of a major Player vs Player war
Germany found a new Player in the now defeated southern Spanish Player, and is now setting to work cleaning up the Mess that is central Europe.
The Kingdom of England(Hadogei) Inherited the Kingdom of Denmark, Kingdom of Serbia and Kingdom of Portugal and is working to increase thier prestige across the globe.
The Khan of Great Moravia(Yami Yagari) spent the better part of this period fighting internal enemies and expanding in Croatia and southern Poland.
The Kingdom of Bulgaria(Blayne) expanded over much of greece and evicted the Knight's of Saint John from Constantinople, only to be overthrown by a fellow dynasty member.
The Kingdom of Nubia(Firehound 15) has made Landfall in Southern India, marking the Islamic Invasion of the East.
The Kingdom of Mesopotamia(EmperorofMordor) has Usurped the Caliphate and subjugated much of Persia, becoming a fearsome power in the region.
After being cut out of the spoils of the Crusade through intrigue the Kingdom of Ruthenia(Dragoon9105) has invaded Poland and Lithuania and is preparing to set up a sister Kingdom in the Baltic
The Yinglings of Norway(King of Men) have managed to subdue most of Scandinavia but is now having great difficulties undoing the Christianization of Scandinavia.
The King of Russia(Gollevain) has solved his internal issues and with the Help of the Ruthenians unsuccessfully invaded the large Perm Khaganate.
I've been lazy about posting my AAR's onto Paradox as well as Ederon, for the full story go there.
The Short Version is, Secret Religions are the worst and should be exterminated.
I also didn't write the AAR for a reward, so I figured that there was more flexibility in how long it ought to be.
SAGA OF THE SAARS: SORRY JESUS, THE SIGNAL IS A BIT SPOTTY
Alternative Title: I remember that Societies Exist
LAST TIME ON THE SAGA OF THE SAARS: Independence, Adventurers, Plagues, Adventurers, Vassalization to the Norse, Adventurers, Plagues, war, a raving lunatic werewolf, and did I mention plagues. Really if there was ever a time when the four horsemen had come to Saarland and Scandianvia as a whole, last session probably was it. Though now that I've said that I've probably doomed the future.
Either way on to this session. We started at war with the the swedes and prussians from last session. Not much changed, things were pretty easy going, we were beating the snot out of the swedes. Unfortunately, the signal between heaven and Saarland got a bit spotty at this point.
30AE4ED9BEAFBB80D611066A9FCA32B6BA82A4C2
I'm guessing there's a solar storm going overhead or something. Either way, not really a good time for this.
There was a bit of worry right toward the end though. The swedes managed to get their hands on one of the holy orders, and promptly kept trying to spawn them. I'm not sure if they just couldn't afford them or what though, as each time they hired them, the army would dissolve in a few days. The few thousand french troops on the other hand were a bit of a problem but my war ended before they could reach us, and the Swedish king promptly died and caused KoM's war to invalidate for whatever reason. So now Saarland has added Aland to its territory, it's too bad this isn't EU4 or the place would become my bastion against the west. Promptly after the war finished, the connection came back through though!
3A4486D57372657630891F16D5B42BE42033367C
Well, better late then never.
Then came the first blot. Much to my characters chargin, as Jesus was currently talking to him, I wasn't going to start shit with KoM right after we decided to team up. So I sent along some cash while sitting in Saarland and focusing on trying to improve the country.
AB60711B1206B8FA9ACAB47DC65345882A44959E
This didn't stop a bit of tension. KoM's trying to spread germanic but due to to Sweden and the few other germanics constantly dropping the ball hard, he's got absolutly no moral authority (not that I have any either.) I'm not going to mess with his germanics as long as he leaves Messalianism alone.
E2674585A7FBF0FB598F3B42982057B002D7068B
Also, this is that heir I brought up last time. He came out not as well as I wanted. Though in the end it doesn't really matter as he still hasn't inherited, and won't for a while still by the end of the session.
But yeah, things were pretty much peaceful here. I didn't have much to care about other then I finally payed off the Jews (not that that lasted long) and have been trying to improve my income. Though as it turns out I earn more then England, and only slightly less then KoM. Though not even close to Bulgaria and the like. (At least going by Title Income.) Also the werewolf urges came back again. Also I lost and regained the voice of Jesus again.
438DAAA8AA70CC91939AC74322BC0194E7FBEC0D
This time a pig. One of these days it's going to go bad.
Hidden behind said werewolfness is that I was helping KoM with his war against denmark. I believe denmark had started it over a Norwegian territory. England also got involved and his army promptly dissolved due to attrition rates. As part of the retaliation, the Saarish have now landed not only in Ireland, but also in England!
9B9B7A23BC855BEF1478864AC6FEA92DBA484A07
Hodegai raised up an army to go drive me off. I beat up a few of the smaller groups to get the warscore to 100% before promptly beating it back to my ships.
Meanwhile back at home, on a carriage ride between two of my castles, Into was writing some poetry (evidently, good enough poetry) before he was distracted by a barricade across the road. His driver and his guard had planned to go through a side path, but Jesus warned Into that it was a trap, and ordered them to push through the barricade.
664DE88D8A872311120F9CBF88DD17378B200DF7
Thanks for the save Jesus, though I never did figure out who was the one who sent these assassins.
Finally thanks to the peace, I was able to implement the other thing I wanted to. I do believe Saarland is the first place in Europe to have absolute Cognatic succession.
B83BC13955005276F2130219039746297ED44FC3
THE TITLE WILL REMAIN WITHIN THE SAARS FOREVER NOW
Also I lost the signal with Jesus again for a bit, but it came back once more!
F1434B6EC2A8DAB014292EE8767CFB2BC1F3EBDA
Yes, Eire controls Spain, no, I don't get how the crusade for it resulted in that.
Also uhh, I kinda killed somebody. I'm not sure if I ate them too but either way I knew something like this would happen.
4DB6E88F1E1227898AF1B3AE8B1CFBE2AA85D765
Surprisingly enough, Jesus is still with me after this.
You might notice the new get up. I finally remembered that the Hermetic Society existed, and decided to go join up. Surprisingly thanks to all the stats I got through being a possessed lunatic, I actually got alot of points quickly. Within the few years I was alive after I joined, I got up to the third rank because I was gaining so many points naturally.
Then Into the Crazy Messalian Werewolf Monk that had a direct if spotty line to Jesus, died. He was succeeded by his sister who was also an old fart, and did little of notice in her life other then build up some things.
After she died, Dutchess Salme took charge. She actually isn't too bad of a leader. Not great like Errki, Pekko or Into were, but not bad.
FD454B4233BB5F67BFF88491CB66DA325ACEF0AB
I also had her join the Hermetic society.
Though I should also note, she has scholar on there, which I picked up this session. Salme spent quite some time and resources in looking into the stars. This turned out highly successful for me. Salme discovered that the Earth is round in 984 and published her work across the land. As part of this exploration she also gained me 300 mil tech points which have put me almost at the level for tier 4 military organization. My temple holders weren't too happy about it obviously though.
Unfortunately I had a problem, for some reason I got reset to Gavelkind succession when Salme took power (even though she was Messalian) and I didn't actually realize this till I decided to look at Salme's son. For some reason he was in Athens, being educated by Dragoon, and was betrothed matrilineally to one of Hadogai's princesses. Given he was in Athens I couldn't do shit about this, and I was like "Wait, why is this 8 year old kid my heir."
Luckily, the session lasted just long enough for me to fix this. Once again we're back to Seniority. This is the succession line.
7CA1AC86D49FB3270F1EAFC792D463F7796DAD4D
Hadogai's plot has been foiled. Said children will not be eligible for succession.
As we come to the end of the session. This is more or less Saarish tech.
D51C3A0D5C516C092F8F32CDE3BB6686F386B7F9
Really, I don't know what to do with all this culture tech. The Customs really aren't all that useful I find. Meanwhile I'll likely start boosting Cav and Light Infantry after I get enough Mil Org for a retinue.
That's all for now folks. I'm hoping thing'll stay peaceful for a while. I want to play around with the Hermetic society stuff and build up my country for the eventual split from KoM once his realm size gets too big due to build up.
Also there wasn't a single plague this session in Saarland! The plague you see here that is telling me about locking the gates hasn't got past Aland and seems to be going west instead of east. I'm working on a hospital anyways though as I think the black plague will be rolling through soon.
the Swedish king promptly died and caused KoM's war to invalidate for whatever reason.
His heir was a pagan, so my County Conquest CB was invalid. I got him, though - I bought a claim on Uppland instead and pushed that.
Then came the first blot.
So I notice you're losing 5 gold, but I was gaining twenty. It seems like it should be possible to arbitrage this, Coase style. Unfortunately the once-per-nine-years limit prevents it from being an infinite fountain of gold. (I mean, technically it's infinite if run for infinite time.)
I believe denmark had started it over a Norwegian territory.
Your faith in the pacifism of the Ynglings is touching, if perhaps a bit touched. I totally started it to get back Naumadal and its Germanic holy site. Only the Copenhagen one left to go, and the war for that looks promising, but getting up to 50% moral authority seems harder. Perhaps I can help some of these prepared invasions along.
I just looked at the title and saw "War for Some name I couldn't pronounce" wasn't sure if it was offensive or not given I don't remember territory changing hands after but I wasn't really paying attention.
Likely this is cause I have a few minor vassals myself that were paying you 5 gold as well, or from catholics in other parts of the country, or was it specifically from me?
I got one popup with 20 gold, and it was specifically your name. I also got a popup saying some other vassal had refused to either attend or pay.
The fate of Ynglings is the fate of Europe...or not?
Well, they certainly try to arrange things thus. They have yet to succeed in any timeline we know of. :)
