It is not first time I experience bad customer service at Steam.
First time was when I Pre-ordered Empire: Total War from them and was promised to be able to download it 2 days before release the original release and play it the day before of the release. Guess what...? When there was 2 days left I exited came home from school and saw that I still couldn't download it, so I decided to search the Total War forums. I found a post that said we couldn't download the game and had to wait to the real release date. I thought I could be one of the first to play the damn game, but no! It's annoying you can't trust them after you paid overprice!

It's not the same, but it's annoying you can't trust a big company with users from around the world.
I know I can just download it from GG, but it's way easier and more safe to have it stored at one place than between different places and you know it's Steam so they could quickly make a patch that didn't allow us to play with modifications...

when Gamersgate does everything better.

Such as? Steam has its problems, but it has much better servers than Gamersgate, and a wider selection of games, plus the whole "game tracking" and achievement dealios. The one thing that I've found Gamersgate to reliably do better better is releasing PI games a bit earlier. But then you spend 10x as long downloading it, so it's a wash.

I recommend to use the distribution platform which is next to the developer/producer of a game. Buy paradox games at gamersgate. Sins of a Solar Empire or Elemental at impulse. Half-Life 2 and its addons at steam. With this method you will have the fewest problems.

May well be because of Paradox in this case, HttT isn't even up for pre-order...

And all your games spread out over three different services. Quite inconvenient.

how bad is your connection? have never had a dl from gamersgate take more then 5 min....and honestly that can hardly be seen as an issue

so as a general rule of tumb, if gamersgate have the game you want, its better to buy from them then from steam

Well you really must be a busy man if you cant wait for a download...
..surely worth that time if you dont have to think about, if you have to be online to play a game, if you dont have your files in some gay subdirectries, if you dont have horrible copy protection...always GG for me, Steam really has no advantages.

Its only inconvienent for guys who arent masters of their own games and have to run it via Steam platform or some other horrible thing that makes simple things complicated.

The thing is that you don't want your games spread out all over the net so I have narrowed it down to Gamersgate and Steam. HTTT was located on a new faster server then other games I've bought from Gamersgate so it downloaded very fast for me.

Funnily enough, the steam download of E:TW was terrible for me. As the OP says, the promised preload never appeared, and when the game finally arrive the steam servers were horribly overloaded. Dl speends were a couple of kilobytes/s and it kept cutting out. People I knew got the physical copy delivered before my download was done:(

I don't understand why people use steam. On every single forum about the few games I play including popular ones people always complain about steam and/or have some serious problems with patching or updating. Yet they still use it. What's the catch? :D

It's the most well known and most popular digital distribution service. Remember, sheep always follow the lead sheep when it moves. I'm guilty of it as well.

I have a 128GB SSD so there isn't much room for many games and with Steam you have an easy way of installing and unistalling your games with full control. You also don't need to go out and try to find a patch and other updates as they are included automatic.

Sheep deserve to be slaughtered, but i will give you another chance , you seem to be willing to learn and i am Christian after all and care for the lost sheep. :D
