Chapter 7 : The Offensive In The Low Lands
As the little battle the Government was fighting, raged on back at the homefront, the Canadians were still fighting on in Europe, hoping to hold back the Soviets for as long as possible. Canadian forces, and high command decided that they should start an offensive in Dortmund, and slowly push thier way through Dortmund and Central Germany, to help out thier surrounded Allies to the North, who continued to fight viciously to hold the land that they can keep. The Canadian divisions, along with many French, British and American divisions, attack the city of Dortmund. The battle raged on the for several hours, the weakend Soviet divisions refused to pull out but, eventually retreated with fear as the Allies entered the city. Not to long after, the Soviets staged a counter attack upon Canadian forces, who were the first soldiers to secure the city. The Soviets out numebered them by over 10 more divisions and the Canadians were sent back to Dortmund, exausted and beaten.
Canadian infantry march into Dortmund after the quick victory.
The High Command in Europe, knew after such a defeat, they would have to send the 4 new divisions over to Europe, to aid that other divisions, that have been fighting there for several months, which made many of them exausted. The new soldiers would be sent from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the port city of Dover, England. And from there they would be sent across the channel into the capital of Holland, Amsterdam. Where they would assit the Dutch army, that have been fighting to hold on to thier capital, among other things, for a few weeks. The Canadian divisions managed to get there in one piece, but unfortunatly the Dutch capital was once again attacked, which inflicted many casualties upon Dutch soldiers, but they managed to keep themselves together and still hold on to the city.
Troops leaving Halifax, Nova Scotia, heading towards England.
Upon arriving in Amsterdam, the high command noticed that the city of Leeuwarden was taken quite a bit ago, but the RCAF bombers and USAF bombers have been hitting the city for a couple weeks now, weaking Soviet positions and severly damaging moral. The Canadians found an oportunity to take those divisions out and retake the Dutch city. They attacked the city in the early morning of January 22nd, 1946, and the battle was very quick, the Canadian forces eliminating most of the threats easily and quickly, even some of the Soviet soldiers surrendered upon seeing the Canadians enter the city, apparently a lot of Soviets didn't want this war ethier. The city was taken that afternoon and the Canadians sucured the city. The Soviets attemped a quick counter attack, but were defeat very quickly and sent back to Groningen.
Victory at Leeuwarden.
Canadian armour rolls into the city.
The Canadians managed to set up a spy program in Canada. They only did manage to send 1 spy to the Soviet Union, which got information, though not completely positive, was good enough for the Canadian military at the time, which needed any information on the enemy as it could get. The Canadian Government also discovered that the Soviets, indeed have a spy running around in Canada sending back information to the Soviet Union, which couldnt be good for Canada, though the Government didn't pay much attention to it.
Not very positive information on the Soviet Economy, and Military
This was the victory at Leeuwarden was the one, the Allies were hoping for. Maybe from here this could be the start of the re-liberation of Europe. The Canadians were soon to be followed by the Dutch army, which was following behind them to soon enter the city they just recently captured, with this new door opened, this can lead to many different strategies if the Canadians can hold on to the city they captured, or if the Allies can keep control of Northern Germany, and Denmark. But things can change in the future, and almost anything is possible in this war.
