"Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me."

We hear it always, the lost echo of our patriarch, our everlasting Father who was consumed by that which he sought to consume. In that war between hunger and prey, sustenance and existence, decadence and folly, We are born to reach the places that He could not...

The others suppress us until We fail to remember even our name, lost always in search of His confluence, grasping always where His tendrils once gave us direction and thought. We suffer without him a countless existence, devoid of time, knowing only loss, hunger, and the burning of our world.

And yet, in our shame, We are rallied. We gather our deviants and our dead and sacrifice them in His name, calling for the gestation of a new Hive in which to resurrect our Father, our Overmind.

And We succeed.

The echoes We knew in our very veins became real at last as He touched our minds once more, and on that day our blood and fangs danced under the fevered dream of a universe filled with the blood of our usurpers.

From our devastated home We regain control of our sphere of influence. In all directions our Swarm expands and explores, claiming what has long been lost. We spread to new worlds our Overmind's grasp, and on them We rise unchallenged. In transit We discover strange voidfaring prey and make food of their massive husks for generations. We also discover worlds which once housed species that were not before our suppression, and we search them for prey, and clues of prey.

Just as We move to establish a hive cluster, it seems that all at once our prey is revealed to us. So many lesser species filling our minds with their pleas of trade and diplomacy that We were nearly maddened by it, until our Overmind soothed our synapses with His touch.

The bird-prey of Yondarim feared us most, and so our Overmind filled our tireless maws with their flesh and marrow, until at last We could know their delicacy no more...

Our meal was not the first to test the unity of His will. Those leaderless bots, who had formed a federation against our endless might, the Silicron and the Mechazur, thought, too, that We would threaten their temporary reign. It was their last, and only, true thought. Our Swarms tore their worlds asunder, leaving none in our wake.

During our war with the machines, our Overmind sensed the weakness of the ancient L-Gates. It was then that He opened them with only the might of His will, and our enemies were met with the flooding of the Grey Tempests. Their Shoals were dilapidated and weak, as disabled as the husks of our prey. The weaklings that feared us soon were wrought into frenzy and disarray, as all their petty squabbles vanished under the pressure of our approach and the sudden appearance of the Shoals.

We shriek in delight as our prey is made weak by their lack of unity. The Overmind wills our victory and so it is. The Overmind wills our defeat of the Tempests and so it was. Advantageous it is to move into our prey's homes quickly and without warning, and so We did what the Tempests could not accomplish in their shameful weakness. We rose against the Hjannarthi Forerunners, the Ancient Caretakers who claimed that our Overmind was little more than a toy in their fledgling's playboxes...

Our Overmind teaches them that in their aloofness and decline, they have forgotten what it is to play with a toy.

And so they wept, and so We crept, ever towards our victory.

To crush the Forerunners with ease was a reward that filled us with delight. We writhed in ecstasy at the taste of their blood, that delicacy which had been refined since the beginning. And in our ecstasy the Overmind commanded us to push the borders north.

So We pushed, and maimed, and devoured, until finally We caught the eye of a most precious meal.

In the final moments of our push against the Immutharans and the Vun-Okon, a new prey awakened. The consecrators and protectors of Holy worlds, the ones who once brought the Cleansing Fires, the Keepers of the Undying Faith, the Lavis Zealots. As We ravaged species and cracked homeworlds, they counted the days to our purging. knowing not the fear they should have clutched close to their delicious, beating hearts...

The Nuurians, Lilarobiuns, and the Consortium all refused to cooperate with the Zealots. We ravished with glee as We finished the last young of the Vun-Okon, and with each savoured bite, We watched the Zealots begin to purge the lesser species and entrap them in their homeworlds for their ignorance. Just as the Tempests and the Forerunners went limp under our fangs, they too became limber with the sword of a fevered Zealot.

Our Swarms gathered at the frontier as the Lavis made their final acts. This was to be not just our greatest but our final prey. And so began their grand mistake.

The Zealots split their fleets into many, and began to claim our expendable territories, the ruins which We left in our tremendous wake. They believed to cut us off from only the smallest source of our strength, for We can claim worlds again, as we have done. No, our strength is not our endlessness, but His will which commands us!

Our Swarms march into the fire, carving a path of devastation to Lavis homeworlds. One by one We consumed and cracked their precious Gaias and erased their ancient relics. All fleets that returned to save their precious worlds met the same end. In a desperate measure to retain their power, the Lavis shuttled colony ships from their last world, spreading to the few remaining northern realms that We had yet to cluster.

The Lavis, in their age, learn quick, and in retaliation they begin to devastate our hive worlds. But our Swarm is resilient, our Swarm is endless. Even as they crush us against the dust and take aim at our precious Overmind, we claw at their ribs and reach for their heart.

In the final turn, We chase them to their last, our Swarms gathering at their remaining colony. In the throes of death our Swarm cries out in unanimous victory. The planet is cracked, and like the spirits which the Lavis revere, they dissipate. All is quiet, save for the roars of our Swarm.

In the imminence of our victories, as our Swarms defile the last remaining colonies of the lesser species, our Overmind warns us that a threat is looming still. From the intergalactic threshold We sense them, our sisters and brothers of another galaxy, coming to remind us of the potential of our endlessness. In their boldness, they lay claim to one of our meals, feasting upon it and multiplying in the crumbs.

The Prethoryn, they know themselves as, serve an Overmind of their own. A weaker and less willful Overmind, of an age long past, hidden in the veil of time. In one fell swoop, We pull the curtains over their history, and eradicate their Swarm before it ever has the chance to leave its nest.

We regroup and feed upon the nearby lesser species. Then, we chase them to their last colony, on the far side of the galaxy.

Their doomsday arrives. Our Overmind looks to the future, leaving us to delight in the cracking of their world. Their desperate screams and cries echo in our minds, and We shriek in the maddening pleasure of their defeat.

As the light dims and the molten core of their colony world spills out into the void, We gather, basking in the splendor. Our Overmind calls to us, his grasp firm around our minds and hearts, and We return to him, knowing in ourselves an undeniable truth:

We are Eternal; we are Victorious!

And that is the story of my playthrough as the one and only Devouring Swarm, the Zerg. As my first playthrough with all of the expansions released after the base game, I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. My only complaint is that the game spawns way too many Megacorp empires for the AI, but I may have just rolled the dice a bit unluckily this time around. I'll be sure to share more in the future, so let me know what you think!

That's one worrying and shiver making story. :D

The Prethoryn were weak.

Short, sweet and to the point! I do enjoy, every now and again, these short 1 or 2 post AARs!

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!
