As patch 1.4 testing was quite suboptimal, to put it lightly to avoid a ban, i wonder if my vassals colonial nations protectorate will count towards WC. Achievements.txt says "subject of root" but what does that mean? My vassals colonial nation isn't a subject under me, it's under my vassal.

I'm France and Castile is my vassal while Castile has colonial nation Florida under them and Florida has Lenape and Mahican as protectorates. In other words France -> Castile -> Florida -> Lenape/Mahican. There are actually several "chains" like that in my game as all the nations that ever colonize in EU4 are my vassals.

So what i'm asking is if Lenape and Mahican count toward WC.

Maybe you could test with some other situation to see if a vassal's vassal/prot fulfills the requirements

I can't offhand think of one except the Unify Islam deal, though

My guess would be no as well.

Subject of root, as I read it, would refer to direct overlord and go no further up a chain.

My guess is that your vassals colonials won't even count.

The achievement condition reads "All existing countries have to fulfill (is the root OR is a subject of root)". It's very reasonable to guess that is_subject_of only covers the direct relation and not subject of subject relations, neither subject of subject of subject, as the protectorate in your question.

If colonial nations (in this case Florida) doesn't count towards WC then i'll start to get worried that Paradox has no clue what they are doing. I mean if they do not count towards WC then i have to declare war on my vassals colonial nation (can i even do that?)... which would lead to me being at war with my vassal. Which is just plain retarded.

No, your vassals' protectorates wont count. But they wont stay protectorates till the end, thats for sure. Its very easy for AI protectorates to westernize, and once they do, their protectorate status ends, at which point you can invade them.

Admittedly, it might be better for states to lose the ability to have protectorates at all if they ever become vassalized.

Wouldn't help the colonial nation thing, though. And colonial nations need to be able to have protectorates.

Of course, the fact that you can vassalize major colonial powers should be an issue in and of itself... If they have a huge colonial empire, they should laugh at your vassal requests, and if they later build one, they should flip you the bird and break away

I can 100% confirm they don't. I had a converted 1.3 game where I only had a few native countries left to conquer for WC and my colonial nations had made them protectorates. You can get around this by starting a separate war to get your colonial nations fighting a war on your side and then declare on their protectorates.

I had to re-take one of my own colonial nations as I didn't have any other options for declaring war.

Well It's a WC, you need to fight for it. The solution is to annex your vassal Castille, this will make their colonial nations independent, and then annex the new nation to form your own CNs. Then you can deal with protectorate. Who said WC shouldn't be tedious? ;)

Vassalizing colonial powers and letting them colonize for you is simply no longer a sound WC strat. Once you vassalize them, they should be annexed ASAP before they can create new colonial states.

I strongly believe Protectorates have to be removed from the game, or Paradox has to man up and fix just how broken they are. Because right now they are just that - broken. There's so much wrong with them and so little is right. I mean they break so many mechanics it's ridicilous.

I'm actually agreeing with you on this one. Only colonial nation you do not have to fully annex is Castile as you can block them out of any coastal provinces.

Never say or meant for WC to be easy or non-tedious. Issue here is that Paradox has made a real cluster"%!" patch and they are behaving like blind, mute and deaf monkeys regarding the issues around it.

Why? I don't get that. Can't you annex them later and just DOW the colonial after that? In my current France game I don't want to colonize the world with my one Colonist. So I leave it to my vassals to do it while DOWing and conquering all the Natives. The large colonial states from the natives should make reconquering the other Colonial states if they break free after Annex a piece of cake.
