So, a friend of mine who just started playing the game was here yesterday and asked me how to win the HYW as England. I blundered a little bit, but still managed to grab the PU, leaving with a very stable position (much better than I usually do - around 10 loans, 2 stability, 6 exhaustion and even some bit of manpower left). Edward then died pretty early, leaving me with a decent (232) but long regency and an even better heir (615).

As soon as that heir got into the throne I declared on Scotland and both Irish minors, which were all allied. Things were going as planned when suddenly my heir died (just 16 years of age!) and this happened:

From such an absurdely lucky start, I was thinking to attempt a WC. Never had the patience to try it, but I guess it's a waste to not at least try it once, esp with this stupid start. So, where do I go from here?

1) I just got my first NI group. I wanted to go Humanism, Exploration, Expansion, Quantity (pretty standard for a colonial game, I guess) before the 666 king happened, but I believe becoming the HREmperor is the correct play in a WC attempt, and I don't know whether I need something like Influence or not to make it happen - I expect to do LOTS of vassalfeeding, but that might not start happening until later when I get to work on Sunni lands or whatever. Also, do I actually need to colonize, or attack + vassalize Portugal and let them do the job for me? Which ideas do I get later?

2) I intend to core the whole British Isles in this war (got claims on almost all of it), and then let France do all the coring in the continent until I inherit it (I figure I need to get bigger so France doesn't try to break free - right now it's atitude is vassal, but that might change once the truce from HYW ends). This way I get all the AE I'll ever get inside the HRE early, and could be theoretically able to start working on the HRE around 1500ish once it dissipates.

3) If I start hitting Castile hard and early, so I can stop them and Portugal from colonizing (and potentially vassalizing them later to get all the colonies they do plant), do all the AE preclude me from getting the HREmperor in any way?

Thanks!

Now that is lucky. Pray hard that you don't get an heir--a Habsburg on the throne would be beyond magical. In fact, if you can score a Habsburg, you get an easy solution to the problems with AE in the HRE--just grab Austria as an ally and feed them everything in the HRE. Help them kill rebels if needed. Once they've eaten enough, look for an opportunity to force a PU on them. I did pretty much this in my WC with Sweden (although I planted a Trastámara on the Austrian throne after getting one from my marriage with Castile). Feeding an ally means you get no AE and pay no dip points for acquiring the land. The risk, obviously, is that you fail to PU them.

Diplomatic, Influence, expansion first, if you intend a WC. Then aristocratic and espionage.

Gain control of the empire asap, then work the reforms to revoke the privilage as quickly as possible. I worked my way through the reforms by 1542 in my austrian game couple days ago. You should aim to have it revoked by 1600. Then and only then, is a WC possible, because it's simply not feesable to deal with the micro'ing of armies to win nonstop wars in order to get a WC. Your game will be all about juggling diplomats, annexing people to add them to the empire and rereleasing a fresh new imperial vassal.

Your single colonist is only to get you into strategic points to start wars around the globe. Let the rest of the world colonise for you, then just take it from them. Also... make sure you block Portugal/spain out of the Indian ocean asap. If they get into those west pacific Isles, you'll have a nightmare getting them out.

War with Portugal and Spain when you can. As Hauptman says you can take their colonies later, but if you can beat them down first why not? It gives the French troops something to do. While in truce with them (having taken their coasts) you go into the HRE. Spit Styria out of Austria, and vassalise some electors. They shouldn't have that much AE from Spain/Portugal, as they're quite far away. It might be worth allying Denmark at the start, you want them to absorb Norway. Furthermore guarantee Novgorod to try and scare Muscovy away.
