By all accounts, I am surprised that they even were ABLE to take the siege. Diplomatically, at least the Archduke of Austria translates that action as a very hostile action by the Polish king. Internationally, if I was to calculate the relations between countries, the POL-FRA one would not be shining, to say the least.

But Colonel, if you had been truly devoted to protecting the maps, you should have DOWed Poland and placed your navy outside Amsterdam. That would have stopped any attempts of stealing the maps.

You are right. At the moment of this dishonourable deed, the desire for some adventure overwhelmed me and blinded my judgement and good will.

i moved Nelson, my king was in that assault. Also i couldnt dow them, they were my allies, and dowing them would leave me in a very unconfortable position vs spain and italy :\

Well, otoh, lacking Portugal, Netherlands and a Scandinavian nation and having a larger map with more colonial space heavily tilts the game towards the traditional colonial powers (ENG, FRA, SPA) so some rogue nation like mine should not really be that unwelcome...

Actually, I explored (using the given conquistadors) and colonised the American provinces long before Holland declared independence..

After stealing the maps, I merely set up a trading post in New Zealand...

Well, in any case I guess I'm up for another game. I guess I only need the weekend for working on my papers that need to be handed in. Haven't even got the books so I can't study yet.

Should Spain choose to continue this policy Italy will have no choice but to go to war.

You fail to see my point. The DOW would of course not mean that you had to invade them. So it wouldn't give you a poor position against Italy and Spain. What could a Poland ally do against them anyway? In fact, that you consider Poland an ally after that insulting move is a mystery to me.

You guys need to cool off. Diplomacy is NOT black and white. And there is NOT that great an advantage to strike first, at least not in this case. Just because one side decides to take some distance to the other, doesn't mean war. Bob refused to NAP me for several sessions, but he never dowed me. Besides, where'd the hostility come from anyway?? Last session Spain were whining over how Italy had been left alone! And now Spain refuses to RM Italy???

The logic is that a player has to have a reason for "distancing" himself from another nation and this reasons is almost always agressive in nature.
