In the GH case, I would normally not allow provinces to be taken (regardless of who dows, that's irrelevant),
It is hardly irrelevant. The one suffering a dow has to contend with military confrontations, enemy plundering and civilian casualties without being able to sue for compensation. So, unless the master of the vassal is forced to pay reparations, the rule is unjust.

I paused the game and wanted to rehost, but both PJL and Nelson guaranteed that there was a deal, and so I decided (seeing what problems a rehost might cause) to keep on playing. First I decided to rule that Poland were not allowed to take any provinces from GH, but continued guarantees from the players convinced me. If you insist on your right to be able to defend your vassal, I will edit the provinces back to GH.

Muscovy 1408-1427

In 1408 we were in the middle of a war with the Golden Horde, but during the war we noticed that Poland had annexed Lithuania, virtually doubling its size. This was alarming for us, since we had not agreed to any deal with them beforehand. Fearing the worst, we decided to make peace with them and prepare for the attack by Poland. Sure enough they attacked, but we were well prepared by then.

The plan was not to rush to the border to meet them, but to wait until they crossed, and then wait for an opportunity to attack with superior numbers and crush them, which is precisely what happened, despite some small setbacks. Once the Polish threat had been contained we began to go on the offensive, taking Polish territory in the Ukraine. We then demanded the two provinces east of the Dniepr (Ukrania and the other one) when we were warned by the Ottomans not to demand anything from them or else they would vassalise the Golden Horde. Not wanting to upset them too much, we decided to white peace Poland, though we continued to fight their allies (which we eventually took Estonia from the Teutonic Order).

However the Poles seemed very unhappy about this and declared us on us again almost immediately, despite taking a heavy stab cost. Still we were prepared for them and soon turned them back. After a short while we made a generous white peace with them, for we were more concerned that the Ottomans had reneged on their word by doing exactly what they wouldn’t do. But for the time being we decided not to do anything that might upset them.

AI behaviour can't be accounted for, neither by the overlord nor the human attacked, unless if the overlord keeps the vassal in his alliance. Therefore at least MY ruling will always be as I stated, regardless of who dowed. Beating an AI vassal should not be a problem for any human nation.

Irrelevant of the rule. A session-long ghosting would have a no different ruling from me. If Spartan claims his right, GH provs will be given back.

France 1427-1450: Turning The Tide

France was in a poor state as the final stages of the Hundred Years War dawned, the mad King Charles VI had left his kingdom in a uneviable state. England had seized Calais, Artois, Zeeland and Flanders along with Brittany and Gascogne that had been retained from earlier conflicts and Austria had rejected peaceful solutions to border conflicts and mobilised.

Charles VII, known as the Dauphin, had to react quickly, utilising the vast stored wealth in the Parisian coffers and promoting some of the most brilliant leaders from the lower ranks as well as increasing french utilisation of the cavarly charge. Some of the most famous of French heroes were to take part in this war, La Hire the stormer of Rochelle, Count Dunois of Orleans, Joan of Arc and the mighty Constable Richmont, Hammer of the English.

The plan was simple, an attack by Austria and England now seemed unavoidable, both had been offered very generous deals and the diplomats had had their chance. Now France needed to strike before her enemies gathered and took the intiative, Richemont led his army of 40,000 heavy cavalry and 15,000 infantry into Calais and the army led by Lord Bedford, brother of the fear Henry V. The battle was short and stunning, within a week Bedford along with his entire army of 40,000 cavalry was crushed to the last man.

The largest English army was down, but Talbot and reinforcements soon arrived to confront Richemont, only to suffer a similiar fate to the first army, Talbot limping back to his ships with a third of his army intact. Flanders, Calais, Artois and Zeeland fell to determined french assualts soon after.

Meanwhile La Hire and his 25,000 grizzled infantry had stormed Gascogne and Brittany, throwing England of the continent entirely. Unfortunately such success was countered with the arrival of Austrian troops in the theatre, slowly massing for a crossing of the Rhine and with a seiging detachment in Munster poised for movement into the Netherlands. Holding them at bay was a hastily raised volunteer army under the command of joan d'arc, a brilliantly gifted young girl who inspired the army to feats of impossible bravery.

Even worse, in the south, the Doge of Venice had decided to overrun the undefended areas of Provence and Marseille for unknown reasons. Dunois was commanded to defend the area with a mere 20,000 cavalry against over 100,000 Venetians.

With Talbot again arriving on the continent and the French atlantic fleet destroyed in a single engagement things were looking bleak indeed. Thankfully Richemont once again proved himself a champion for France by sending Talbot scurrying back to England before turning south to rendevous with reinforcements for a crushing offensive into Austria, destroying a 30,000 strong austrian raiding force on the way.

In the south the venetians had stayed in the mountains after Dunois had annihilated a tentative bridgehead across the Rhone and in much better news the Dauphin had concluded a treaty with the English to preserve the disputed areas from continuing warfare, with France paying a sizeable tribute to Henry VI in exchange for the cessation of all English continental possessions. With the signing of the Treaty of Flanders the Hundred Years War was over and the French war machine could be turned to the remaining combatants.

Venice quickly signed peace for a symbolic grant of military access, and Austria troops evacuated beyond the Rhine whilst Richemont and Dunois methodically besieged all castles on the french side, after a year without any major engagements the Archduke was ready to come to the table for peace on moderate french terms. Liege, Luxembourg and Geldre were handed over and peace was restored allowing France to fulfill its obligations to England, who was in the opening throes of a bitter civil war, eventually won by the rightful ruler, Henry VI.

But France had emerged from its conflict strong and united and not a single frenchman could ask for more

venice/italy 1337-1427 part 1

the italian republic had faced tough times due to italy beeing divided in too many political entities, wherethe rich famillies were behaving in a rather destructive manner for an italian unity of any sorts. they were prefering that as a way of controling their subjects and especially share the benefits ONLY between themselves and not the people.... the doges had forseen that and has adopted a new code of conduct: side with masses provide them with great jobs into an ever evolving industry(innovative slider).while the concept of "class" could not be abolished just yet, it will always be an ideal never to be abandoned( becouse of that the population morale is rather high). also there is a need of a centralization state where big brother can effectivelly protect itself against foreign interest( them beeing commercial, militarry or otherwise). since the begining the army had to be restructurated with an absolute new design.
within 4 years, the initial campaigns have brought no less the 7 vassals, from savoy to frienze. however the pope has been annexed by savoy.

so, within 10 years , the venetian army has laid italy to waste only to have ir reborn again eventually. much discontent has been coused sometime after the initial campaign, where a few rich families has seen a posibility of claiming their lands back under the protction and castilian supervision, wich itself has found herself at war with venice over the naples question. barelly a few months into the war, no less the 4 old italian republics(vassals) have dowed our great nation. the doge at the time hacd to run for cover from the naples batelfield, wich in turn has coused his lost of leverage over the naples question. however due to castile own problems, naples has been settled as following: apulia ( and sicilly) will remain a spanish base, while the 2 north provinces will be eventually incorporated into itally.
meanwhile the turks demanded the 2 greek islands in italian possesion at the time, and they have declared war on us. however the economic principals as well as practical ones made the doge give in the sultan's demands rather quick. while it upseted some local nobles that wanted a full scale war, their arguments proved rather weak especially regarding the means to the end...
with this deal done , the venetian generals had free hand to deal with the republics rebellion wich was brought to a quiet swift end by means or re-vassalization or direct annexation. also the eternal city has been brought back into the italian life, and pope reinstated in his vatican palace, but only as a source of inspiration for his people and the faith itself. his eartlly possesion had been nationalized, a terminology not much used those days, but wich slowlly becomes part of the italian vocabulary.
italy FINALLY has seen real peace and no more wealthy families dictating and restricting national emancipation. there was even then talk about reunification, however the wise doge at the time decided that it should be a slow process, assimlate first and conquer later policy. also italy needed peace, a process wich was more likelly to develop a strong italian unity and not just a "fragile" word with no meaning...

the period that followed was rather quiet; for about 30 years the various nationalistic aspects were absorbed by means of compromising on various issues. from bringing together all regional dialects that have emerged since the old roman empire and wich was always a couse of rift between inhabitants. private armies became a thing of the past, and while italian-english relations improved considerablly, a specific embargo has been imposed on anglosaxon mercenaries roaming the lands of italy , looking for a master that could use their military skills, and thus creating political and militarry uncertinities as they had been done for the 300years prior to that...the english monarchs were please with that as well, since they could use their "skills" in the fields of france(some of them with excelent militarry tactics but others with a fame for rape and madman insanity). that approach has been proven beneficial for the english since they were able to bring france to its knees in a rather surprisinglly quick war that left the whole european monarchs in "wow's. however that victory has not been proven to
be long lived, as anyone can read why in the history books...
while the process of assimilation was going on, the venetian doges and their families spent most of the times in the palace, educating themselves and breeding a new type of future rulers. the importance of family has been brought into the italian life, since that is the first and foremost important aspect of any unity. families form a nation only if they are REAL families first with all the responsabilities that come along.
the doge ruled by example and was elected by the "council of 10", similar to the old roman republican senate, but with the diffrence that there was at all times an executive branch(generals, admirals, governors, etc) as well a legislative ones( advisors, judges, etc). and the doge was elected on basis of his relations BETWEEN those two, as to make sure he will provide the much needed balance wich in turn ALWAYS avoided family rifts(the couse of ANY major conflict especially civil wars).
in this period the only major accident( never much discussed by the history itself unfortunatelly). it consisted of a castilian betrayal, by means of mending themselves within the civil war raging in naples at the time. they have brought and sided with one of those napolitan families wich in turn and to return the "favour", and have virtually made naples a castilian vassal.
also , imprtant to note, the great understanding and economic coopeartion between the new hasburgh empire taking shape north of the alps. the hasburgh familly has provided itself worthy of italian attention since they seem to follow same desire for emancipation as the italians always did. therfore ideology proves a stepping stone into forming balances foreign relations.

venice/italy 1427 - present - part 2

true to its alliance, the council of 10 have decided that war on france shall be declared, even if there was nothing to gain. however there were 2 major reasons:
-ever since the pope has been incorporated into the italian life, and he has given up his earthy possesions, some french nobles from the savoy region, upset with the their previous loss of papal controlers, installed a new anti-pop in avignion. they were trying to create a crusade against the real pope calling him names and such...even worse they were hoping to bring the king of france himself to the conspiracy and not only...for GOD'S sake, they were conducting negociations even with the turks  . and they call themselves "christians"
- the new formed army needed a major test and field experience, as to make sure that military tactics will be passed on , and not just simplly forgatten...

THE WAR and its consequences:
france on an offensive war against both english and hasburgs. to bad that the wealth of the french kingdom was wasted on such ambitions(getting the low countries). instead they could have built more universities and promore the humanism doctrine...well, to each his own i guess...
within less then 6 months the italian troops, driven by the latest greatest general "sofraza"(4351 stats if remeber right), have quicklly overun and taken control of the provence area including the formal papal residence of avignion. the antipope "asshole the third" tried to run away at first under the protection of french troops, but becouse the swift italian advance and its cavalery corpse especially he has been cought and executed outright in the name of italian unity. however the french commander "dunois", in charge if defending the area, has managed to kill off, to the last men , the brave italian troops that ventured inside the french proper and sacrificed themselves in the name of the italian unity itself, their names shall not be forgatten!\

PACT OF THE "TWO CESARS":
- following the success in capturing and killing the anti-pope, the council of 10 has realized its objective, further more was having under tight control the area. there was some consideration of demanding avignion(as a former papal land). however the italian renaissance ideas came first, wich dictates a balance approach on life. therafter a quick resolution has been reached with the french king in wich he will provide militarry acces( to make sure no italian troops will suffer the same fate as the anti-pope's executioners did, and having a free hand in roaming the freanch lands in search for those semi-freanch former savoy "nobels").as well, it was in france interest to get rid off the savoyan families that could prove a threat to their own throne some day. furtehrmore, the french king renounced any further possible involvment within italy itself and a mutual non-DIRECT-agression pact (not going at war against each other 1v1). however itally and france can fight one another in the field by means of alliance only, without having direct land claims on each other, regardless whom's alliance might win the "grand" war.
french are rather an intreasting breed of people. while ther will likelly be international disagreements, it seems that they do respect each other in an nationalistic approach, without beeing any "close friends" necessarry.

the ITALIAN-SPANISH PACT
upon the meeting that took place on the island of corsica, the doge representing the italian state and the castilian monarch has reached an understanding on the following line: italy will accept present castilian dominace over naples(including their possible annexation) until 1500, when those 3 italian provinces should be incorporate in the italian proper. sicilly and malta will be integrated into the castilian defence, with militarry bases beeing buit there eventually, wich should as well bring a mutual italian-spanish defensive pact.

SECOND ITALIAN REPUBLIC:
there was new "blood" brought to the venetian court, mostlly as result of reinassence educations and philosophies. the last remaining 2 italian "nations" have been finally incorporated into the new second italian republic( our history considers "old" rome as be the first republic before it became the roman empire, and we are not proud of our past imperial status, that followed that freat first republic, and wich brought dire consequences to all european tribes and related political entities).
upon the declaration of state reformation, there were many ideas an proposition brought to the table. in the confusion, a new italian flag has been adopted without too much discussion about it; and that proves to be much debated as upon the closer inspection on the matter, its designer was a former english mercenarry. now this is very intreasting, becouse the monarch on the english throne was widelly seen as "insane" by the international comunity. he probablly sent this knight into making italy an english vassal, a fact that is much loughed about within council to this days. however the flag has not been changed out of consideration for italian-english relations at both foreign and diplomatic level. the english people and the british nobles themselves are aware they have an insane monarch that seats all day in his palace making up plans for world conquests. poor guy....(but who knows, usually crazy people are seen as such becouse they actually have better visions then the rest of us...so maybe england will become an empire...).

there was yet another intreasting aspect, worth to be mentioned in the history book. becouse huge popular excitement over the unity declaration, there was a confusion regarding where the new state's capital will be located. the council failed to inform the doge of their decision, wich coused the former to move his residence to rome for a few days, where he personally thought the capital will certanlly be located. he even made plans for a new forum to be built(to host the parlaiment). however the council choose that veneto should remain the capital for well considered reasons, still a "state secret" to this day. the various italian factions have accepted that. also the pope shall remain in vatican, rome beeing kept as the spiritual center of the republic.

the demands over the sothern lands (naples) becomes louder and louder within the council. however the general wisdom dictates a balance approach on such issue and we will be given the italians a second chance to respect the second naples agreement( first one was broke by the previous player).

TYROLIAN DICTATE:
it consist of a provincial swap in the north; the swizz culture province owned by italy to be given to austria in exchange for reciving the other with italian culture (also a "core" for italy).

the Castilian AAR

Castilian AAR, by Don Juan xxx

ScreenSave34-1.jpg

In 1337 but a weak minor on the periphery of Europe, a 100 years later Castile completed the process of dominating the western ends of the Old Continent.
With it came new challenges in the Western Mediterranean, which the Castilian government was only halfheartedly willing to deal with.

Turco-Castilian relations, which had been good, were growing tense over the Canarian sugarcolonies.
Reports of the people there adopting Muslim faith, and typical Turkish habits led to severe pressure from certain anti-muslim factions on the government to step up its tone towards Istanbul.
The Sultan, who understood the King's position, agreed to give them up for 450£.
Pettyness from the Castilians and hesitation from the Sultan led to war, but after a Castilian amphibious landing in the Canaries all seven idolworshippers there were arrested and put to the wall. The Turkish government was quick to give up the prestigious, but far flung colony, in order to maintain the strategic partnership with Madrid against Venice.

Also politional action against Granada, after repeated aggression towards Portugal, which led to the occupation of Gibraltar, severed relations between Madrid and Istanbul.

Another event pushed the Madrilene government even further from the Sublime Porte, and in to the arms of the Doge, and that was the Berber invasion of Portugal. The King was reluctant to do more then condemn it with words, but again the anti muslim factions in the court proved stronger. In his last pro-peace speech before the nobles King Juan had said the legendary words: "I don't care who they worship, as long as they pay their taxes!"

Before he could risk angering the Sultan, Juan made peace with the Doge. Foreseeing the unification of the peninsula, he swore to return Southern Italy to the Republic, after 1500. Growing Italian nationalism, combined with Venetian ambition, had shifted the balance of power in Southern Europe tremendously, and Madrid sought to fare a more independant course from both the Doge and the Sultan, and tried to stay out of their slumbering conflict.

To keep its neutrality the fleet building program was intensified. In the period 1427-1451 the Madrilene fleet almost doubled in size! Still, compared to other nations, it ranked as the third largest navy.

In the late '40s Castile's involvement in the Berber-Portuguese war had gotten to a full out war. The Castilian navy blockaded the entire North African coast, operating from bases in Sardinia and Sicily. And Alvaro de Luna went looting the Morroccan and Tunisian countryside. Tunisia was quickly fully covered or sieged, as was the Moroccan coastline. A massive Moroccan 40k counterattack was completely annihilated before the gates of Marrakech, after which the remaining Moroccan cities were all layed under siege. After looting around a bit Alvaro de Luna was called back home, where he was received as a hero. In the euphorical state, however, Juan forgot to demand Granada, the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian peninsula. Insurgents in that province were armed and funded and when they broke away from Morocco, Juan immediately invaded them in return for their coöperativeness.

England 1427 - 1451

Bracing the Nation for War
England's less then capable Monarch (going through a bout of Insanity) was not a stupid man. France was going to declare war and all of Europe knew it. The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire was contacted and the debt that he owed the King was paid. The King had spent time strengthening the Alliance with Austria and Venice. Both nations had promised there support and it was crucial that there word was honored. France was very large, very rich, and very upset after such a humiliating defeat in the last armed conflict. Military pushed to supportable limits, the idea of an offensive war further instilled (+1 shock), and fortifications built up the King did all he could to prepare but rumors were spreading that it would not be enough.

France's Revenge
As expected France declared war and marched there vast armies into the recently conquered lowlands. An army of 45k English Cavalry stood ready in Flanders and quickly moved to meet the French led by the amazing General Richemont. The first battle commenced and it was to be an excellent example of this war was to play out, England's entire continental army was destroyed. The King of England did all he could to hold of the inevitable English defeat while awaiting Austrian and Italian intervention. Austria honored the agreement and declared war on France. With German troops crossing into France the situation did not look so bleak. A fresh Cavalry unit was sent across the channel and landed in Northern France. Roaming the countryside it was routed time and time again by crack French troops as Joan of Arc ravaged England's continental holdings. Italy, who had entered the conflict as well was pressured by a belligerent Ottoman Empire to white peace France and leave England to her fate. Future King's will not forget the Sultan's intervention in Christian affairs and eagerly await the chance to fund Ottoman enemies. With just Austria and England fighting a war neither nation could hope to win England looked for a way out...

Peace Agreement and Civil War
Having destroyed over One Hundred Thousand English cavalry and taken control of all England's continental possessions France had the ability to take what she wanted. The King of France then made an unexpected move, he offered to pay 4000 ducats for all of the land he had conquered in the war. All of England was stunned, after being stab hitted into the ground, expended all resources, and lost every battle the King of France was willing to help England save face and recover some dignity. The offer was quickly excepted and a Royal Marriage was arranged between the two nations. The English people are not easily fooled, such a generous offer is not given out without a hidden agenda. The fact that a Non-Aggression pact was signed with Italy yet not with Austria is a good sign that France is trying to isolate the German power and dissolve any alliance Austria might have. Austrian assistance in English affairs will not go unnoticed. Any enemy of Austria is an enemy of England. England finally had everything under control, the war was over, investments were put into stability, and the military was being rebuilt when suddenly Civil War struck the nation. Provinces rebelled all over the British Isles and the Northern Islands. With such a shorthanded military and without money to recruit more soldiers soon England would have territory defecting left and right. But in England's darkest hour France quickly came to the rescue. With French money The King was able to end the Civil War and even buy back Irish lands from Castile. With the loss of all continental possessions and a crippled economy England's future looks bleak. French generosity combined with the lack luster showing from England's once "Grand" alliance is forcing England to rethink her diplomacy. Stagnation now will surly end in disaster.

Austrian AAR 1427 - 1451

War!

The King of France had approached Albert V of Austria with a proposal for peace. But Albert, friend and ally of Henry the Mad of England, was not to leave his island brothers behind. Instead, he refused to sign any deal with the French, and sent the messenger back with threats of war. His actions inspired his generals, and despite their knowledge of the French might, they were eager to fight. And not surprisingly, Charles VII declared war on the English, demanding them to cede all their continental holdings, including their newly won territories in the Lowlands. Not long after hearing this act of violence, Duke Albert declared war on the French. The Austrian army marched into the French parts of the Dutch lands, and met little resistance. But it was all an illusion...

Mistakes and miscalculations

The English resistance proved slight at best, and the finest French general, Richemont, waded through the Anglosaxon blood with barely a scratch. Within months, all English fortresses had been breached, and the French army sent general Dunois with a large army to defend the Austrian attack. With the English beaten back, Richemont came to the East border, and it wasn't long until the Austrian commander Teubner was struck by panic, and led his cavalry straight into France, reaching the West coast before being intercepted and ultimately defeated. This was the beginning of the end for the Austrian war machine. The English were bought away by France, and while the Doge of Venice had shown his support for Albert, he too had to back down, after pressure from the Sultan in Constantinople. Austria was left to face the French wrath, and without her ablest general, and with Richemont leading the massive armies of France, defeat seemed certain. When peace came at last, after desperate but futile attempts from Austria to regain some control, all holdings in the Lowlands was handed over to Charles VII, together with the rich city of Luxemburg, which the king of France already had expressed his discontent with if it was to be an Austrian fief.

Grasping for power

Albert had been humiliated and defeated, his glory and power tarnished and lessened, and his realm was laughed at from the different courts of Europe. But he would not sit idly and feel sorry for himself. Instead, he robbed the last few Princes of their independence, honoured his most generous deal with Emperor Friedrich I of Brandenburg, and even made sure that the Swiss were to be put under control forever. The only realm that was left vassal status was now the formerly glorious kingdom of Hungary, but rumours spread that it was not to be for long. Consolidating his borders and centralising his control, Albert was now pleased to see that Austria was still a major candidate in the European theatre, and had an army of considerable importance for any ruler to respect.

Dealings with a new King

Venice was no more. The Republic had been transformed into a kingdom state of no match in the civilised world. Francesco Foscari had created a powerhouse of magnitude, and Duke Albert was not late to establish support for this new government. With the annexation of the Swiss, it was agreed upon that Austria would become the protector and ruler over all the Alps, from Geneva to Vienna. In exchange, the Foscari of Italy would receive the Trento area, which Austria had inherited from Tyrol about a century ago. It was also agreed that the one large port in Austria, located in Krain, would become an Italian controlled region, following the abandoning of the naval program by Albert V. With this deal, relations between the two realms were kept at a high, and that was considered vital for the security of both the capitals, being so closely located.
