I have been playing the Trains Scenario from Mass Transit, and the water coming down the river from off the map is very inconsistent. Rather annoying, as when the "gap" in the water passes my water pumps, the city is without water. I even tried using the Natural Disasters water tanks, but they won't supply the full city, even briefly. Must only be able to provide enough flow for nearby buildings.

Happens a lot.

I completed that scenario myself and didnt notice such drastic behaviour. Probably as I quit the map when I solved it in the year 2025. But I could see small "waves already appearing then, they must just get worse over time.

Its tricky designing water flow as you can test it for the possible life of a city. What may work in the short term, in the long term crazy things can happen, this could be once such case.

It has been going on for awhile, but I think it is getting worse.

I could have completed the scenario a long time ago (I have purposely not built sufficient track to complete it, and that is the only requirement remaining), but there is more I wanted to do with the city, and I have a tendency to start on a new city once the goals are met.

I really should finish it, as I think it is the ugliest/worst city I have built in a long time, if not ever.
There are some spots that are kind of nice though.

I completed that one as soon as I could, my city too was nothing to be proud of! Some scenarios I've continued after solving them but this one did not inspire me to develop it further!

Did you install some kind of super-duper intake water pumps or something ?
Just adding some humor, but in all seriousness, I think the problem is with the intake water pumps. It's too much of a coincidence that the problem starts exactly where the pumps are located. Something wrong with the programming for this scenario, is my guess. So it's something the developers need to fix and it is of no fault of yours.

that's what you do in a hurry and it looks perfect viewed from above doesn't it! :D

Yeah, it looks almost perfect from overhead. Can't say the same for the whole city though.

Nope. Most of the pumps there are not even turned on. Just built and ready to go when I need them.

The problem starting there may have something to do with it, or simply be because usually when I notice it and take a screenshot is because I was getting the "no water" icons all over the city, and that is what makes me aware of it when it happens. Pretty sure I have seen it come from upstream outside city limits, but I may need to sit and watch for it for awhile to try to confirm or deny.

This is a map design issue, a similar thing happens with The Dust Bowl map (a.k.a. Tornado Country scenario). I've speculated this to have something to do with water sources causing amplifying gravity waves.

I played that one to completion, and I don't recall it happening there. Certainly not to this extent at anyway. There may be some flaw in the map that is then "amplified" by some other condition, or simply random chance?

Did you make sequential saves? If so you can go back in time to see when it first occurred.

I do make sequential saves. I don't trust overwriting saves. Have not had a huge amount of free time to look into it. Spent some on taking screenshots for the wiki.

I did also remove all of the water pumps that were not yet in use, and removed the advanced wind turbines that were no longer in use, and it seemed to stop. That said, the test time was relatively short, and it was one of the cities I used for the wiki disaster screenshots. (In the more attractive part of the city, even if it was mostly grid there.)

More testing is needed.

I had replied to that saying many of the pumps were not active, and have since realized I never posted an image showing the pump area in question.

Here is a shot just after the gap passed the water intake pumps.
20170723074436_1.jpg

When the water was low, I did add some more pumps for future use thinking I could fit more, so many of the ones above are not turned on.
In the next picture you can see more that I added, also not on.

20170725080734_1.jpg

Most importantly in the above image, is the water gap can be seen to start before the water pumps and advanced wind turbines.
You can also see a number of low spots down river to the left (river water flows right to left in this image).

Here the tank reservoir (from Natural Disasters) is 89% full, but only seems to help a really small area near it. (I suppose there is some realism in that, but it makes the money spent on it pretty much wasted. Not going to fill the cities with them.)

Here is another shot showing a "disturbance" upriver from my city limits:

20170802014344_1.jpg

I did do some very slight alterations to the shore line to fit the T-intersection at the far left of the image. May have done some elsewhere, but I don't think so.

Forgot... here is a shot showing that only a few of the water pumps are actually in use. (just like to reserve the space and make it quick to restore water when the city consumes more than I am producing, just turn another one on.)

it does sound odd but maybe even with a small amount of water extracted from the river its enough to cause that phenomenon? Something that takes time to appear...

I do suspect that the water pumps removing some water does make it worse. The phenomenon does start upstream outside city limits though.

I watched it a lot, and it tends to not do it while I am watching.

From time to time, I did see a bit of a zig-zag pattern in the water upriver though.

I meant to get these shots up too, but got sidetracked adding "Concerts" stuff to the wiki, as well as real life stuff.

Anyway, they show a big distortion in the water flow upstream outside of my city limits.

20170808034030_1.jpg
20170808034106_1.jpg

So while it likely worsens significantly where the water pumps withdraw water, the source is upstream outside city limits, beyond my control.

(And again, please excuse the ugly city.)
