In their current forms, I feel that the potential for wastelands are, well, wasted (kick me now). I stand with the devs with the idea that the wastelands shouldn't be colonized; though some nations should be added in some of these regions (looking at you, east Africa).
I came up with an idea that'll give use to wastelands as well as colonists after every empty province has been colonized.
At some point, there should be a diplo tech in midish to late game which allows a nation bordering a wasteland to send a colonist into said wasteland. Sending a colonist would start off a mini adventure, much in the way searching for the seven cities works. The rewards could yield copious amounts of ducats by working out a trade deal with the locals, mp with the discovery of new fauna, etc. of course, there would be the risk of having your colonist slain, which would leave a colonist slot unusable for a few years.
Perhaps some wastelands would have a unique natural wonder which a nation would have to send a colonist to discover through the mini adventure. For example, the Great Basin would have Zion canyon.
What do you guys think?
