What really kills my shoulder for longer play sessions is having to drag the mouse to edge of the map to move it around. Could we instead have the WASD keys to move the map?

Ehm "W" key works as a mapmode key, and as said above the arrow keys work fine.

In fact, all of the WASD keys are already reserved for different hotkeys. Arrowkeys scroll the map. Has worked just fine for me.

Yeah, arrowkeys work, but it doesn't feel natural to use my left hand on the right side of my keyboard where the arrow keys are. Least implement some way to remap the keys.
It would be good if you could change which hotkeys are for which thing. Actually I don't know; can you do that already?

That doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. I checked the options for controls, and the only thing there was the ability change mouse movement speed and scroll speed.

Oh, regarding the mouse: you can drag the map around by holding the wheel down and moving the mouse.

I would be down for a 21st century UI feature, such as letting players manually re-bind their hotkeys though. It's kind of a shame when a game like this gets shown-up by 16 bit emulation software and games from 15 years ago wrt certain QoL features.

Doesn't change the fact that I'm still using the mouse to move the map around. As I said, its hard on the shoulder, even with the ergonomic mouse.
What i do is zoom out first, then drag, then zoom back in, the further i want to move, the more i zoom out first. And since it zooms in on the possition on the pointer, it may not always even be required to move the map at all after zooming out.
The funny thing in regard of the hotkeys/shortcuts is that you can rebind them in the gui files in the game directory. For some of the Paradox games it even shows in the files that the modes have two key bindings (wasd and the Fx keys).
So this page is the top google result for me when searching on how to change the keys. That was my rationale adding to this post, despite its age.

although the keys we want:
"w" -> minimappanel.gui
"a" -> unitpanel_main.gui
"s" -> unitpanel_main.gui
"d" -> unitpanel_main.gui
can be rebound, I see no way to bind them to map movement. There isn't anything in the gui/gfx files I can find that specifies that the arrow keys control the main map (in fact I can't find anything representing the main map at all). This makes me think it is hardcoded, at least in the necro version (1.14) I play.
However-- there is a way to fix it.
