The Imperium seems like a Fallen Empire would suit it well, at least in some aspects.

The Imperium isn't a fallen empire.

The Eldar and Necrons are fallen empires: Once might empires that are now a shadow of their former selves. They lack the numbers they once had but they are technologically superior.

The Imperium is an empire on the verge of falling in 40K, and you as the tabletop player are the ones who an contribute to saving that empire or tipping it over the edge.

By definition if the Imperium was a fallen empire there wouldn't be much point in the 40K setting. Or at least there would need to be a different "main character" as it were.

I would suggest you lot going for some sort of non-galatic start. As in, this is in some frontier area, like the khronos expanse, filled with many mysteries, secrets, xenos race, and more. Just for it to keep the general feel of the game.

Actually we're focusing on random gen, and later a sector or segmentum later :). We're going to try and embrace the best elements of both. Ideally we'd like to make a 30k and 40k start up as well besides the random gen.

Also the Most important part of the mod for us is not necessarily the location but the look and feel of the units and events. If it feels like 40K it won't matter nearly as much as where it's located.

Greetings everyone,

Welcome to our dev diary. As you may have heard, we are aiming to develop a large-scale mod for Warhammer 40K. I think I speak for most of us when I say that we've been salivating with anticipation of the possibilities Stellaris offers for a Warhammer 40K setting.

Our team carries a lot of experience in the modding community. Some of our Warcraft 3 mods are being played by hundreds of players to this day, while our members have worked on various major Paradox games mods. And we are all ardent lovers of Warhammer 40K.

Our vision is to re-create as faithfully as possible the Warhammer 40K universe. We want to stay true to the lore and most importantly we want the players to feel immersed and not just play a game that has all the right names but doesn't engage the player.

This is a great undertaking, and we wish to assure you we will be working long and hard on this project. We aim to be releasing the mod in chunks, where in each patch we'll be adding a lot more content.

For the setting, there is still some ongoing discussion, but we have settled on making a 40K game. A portion of our team wanted to do a 30K setting, and progress into 40K slowly, but we feel 30K might be putting the Imperium at an unfair advantage over everyone else, as well as disabling at least 2 major races, the Tau and Tyranids. Fear not, however, for we still wish to create a 30K setting, but it will come later on. We discussed the possibility of creating alternate starts, contained in the same mod.

Furthermore, we have decided that for our first versions we'll have randomly-generated galaxies, but at a later stage we'd like to give the players the option to play with set-maps of Segmentums or Sectors. We'd also like to create asymmetrical starts if possible, that will be focused more on military endeavors rather than on exploration.

We are planning to revamp the race creation as presented by Stellaris, to accommodate a more lore-friendly approach, while keeping the degree of variance from the vanilla experience. This will give the players the capacity to create and play with their own Space Marine chapters, or their own Ork Tribe, etc. More importantly, one of our main goals is to add as many minor races and factions in the game. We are planning to add all the more important ones at first, like the Slaugth and Hrud. As we release more patches we'll be adding all the more obscure ones like the Lacrymoles or Saruthi. Of course the Xenos won't be the only ones seeing love. We'll also add many abhumans and mutants, and are considering a couple human splinter empires.

That's all for today, stay tuned for more updates. If you have any suggestions,or you'd like to help us, please leave us a message here.

have you guys figured out where this going down if it isn't the whole galaxy?

For the random gen it doesn't take place in anything specific. For the set version probably Ultima Segmentum. But, as we said we're likely making mini-mods to go along with each and every setting.

Unrelated to this post we did a big part of our intended overhaul of the main post now that we aren't relying on art mock ups :).
