Total noob here.

I started a game as King of Norway, and so far I've conquered the 5 northernmost counties of England. But what do I get out of this? Mousing over holdings in the conquereed counties shows that they're occupied by me; but I can't interact with them in any other fashion. Do they ever become "mine"?

Short answer: no.

You can only claim territory in war by pressing claims. You can occupy them until the second coming of Honey Boo-Boo, but they still won't be yours...

First: Welcome to the boards.

You have to win the war. I assume you are playing as Harald and are invading England currently. Check down at the lower-right, there should be a little portrait of Harold Godwinson with a red or green number. Green means you are winning, red means you are losing.

When it gets to 100% you can demand they concede defeat. What you get is dependent on the CB you chose to begin with. Harald has the invasion CB (IIRC), which means when you win you get all of Harold's territory in England as well as the title "King of England".

OK, thanks for the replies. I guess I need to bring in more troops if I'm going to get home any time soon.
Just get ready for a double-whammy. If William the Bastard hasn't been defeated yet, when you take the crown of England, William will still be at war with you (because he is also invading England). It might help to harass his soldiers a bit if you can catch them outnumbered.

Holy moly. England is mine, and my demense is 37/6. William is still tied up in Middlesex, and all but the lower 7 counties are mine. My current war is over. Will have to give away all these titles now ... should be a popular fellow for a while.

The King of Norway starts with a rather large sum of money so Hiring for example the victual brothers shouldn't be hard as long as you disband the fleet ASAP cause it's burning through your coffers. Second, it's an invasion so upon winning you will personally own EVERY SINGLE holding that you have OCCUPIED. So you should take some time to siege and conquer every single holding under the English crown, maybe even the Duchy of Normandy if William won before you. That way you can hand out to loyal Norwegians you spawn at the intrigue window.
After that go create the Empire of Scandinavia :) (it's easier said than done, but still easy once you get the hang of the game)

Holy moly. England is mine, and my demense is 37/6. William is still tied up in Middlesex, and all but the lower 7 counties are mine. My current war is over. Will have to give away all these titles now ... should be a popular fellow for a while.

Being over demesne limit gives a negative relationship with your vassals, plus Bishoprics and Cities are useless to you, and should have their own baron level mayors and bishops. Just right click over the holding of a baron title and there should a button that says create minor vassal or something.
